Do older people need to have global warming explained to them?

Today the BBC published an item on their news site entitled
Earth Day: How to talk to your parents about climate change
www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-65339214

in it teenagers explain the concepts of how to lead an environmental life to their parents. The topics covered are: eating less meat, flying less, and avoiding waste in food, shopping and everything else.

Things that have been discussed again and again on GN by many parents old enough to be these teenagers grandparents.

Why does the BBC think that older people are all global warming unaware and do not know or understand that we how to change our lives to meet future challenges?

From my experience we are probably more aware and doing more to reduce energy consumption (too poor, to do anything else but cut back on heating), eat more thoughtfully and generally consume less than most under 30s.

I note on the same day, one of the founders of Extinction Rebellion is seen in a supermarket buying fruit and veg flown in from Africa and Asia and wrapped in plastic and she then drove home in a diesel car.www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-11998895/EXCLUSIVE-XR-admit-founder-Gail-Bradbrook-hypocrite-buying-fruit-wrapped-plastic.html?ico=related-replace Other papers had it, but most had pay walls.

I'm going to teach all the little children to say "wanna" and "gonna" and also "cos".

I will tell them they will get extra marks in exams for them too.

You've uncovered my genius plan but you can't stop me

Wisefalcon Sun 23-Apr-23 09:43:06

Why not link it all together? 3 in one.

VioletSky Sun 23-Apr-23 09:39:17

Oh my gosh I've just seen all the comments aimed at me

I said "wanna" which doesn't at all stack up against some very personal and unnecessary comments

Started the day with a good laugh though

Germanshepherdsmum Sun 23-Apr-23 09:38:28

Don’t we all? But would you correct a child who said or wrote ‘wanna’ or would you consider it an acceptable ‘regional abbreviation’? It’s easy to remember not to swear in front of a child, but if you’re used to using this ‘regional abbreviation’ in your everyday speech/GN posts would it not just slip out?

VioletSky Sun 23-Apr-23 09:34:03

It’s not a word, if one can call it that, which I would expect someone involved in the teaching of young children to use.

Oh I use lots of words in my own time that I wouldn't use around children. Some of them very rude

people wanna blame children

“Wanna” ????

I'm.just typing out some regional abbreviation in language

It's just a shorter way of saying "want to"

Lots of people say wanna here or gonna for going to.

I’m not sure that’s a regional thing - pretty much ubiquitous for quite a few people, I’d have thought - at least in speech. I really don’t like seeing them written, though - they do rather get my pedant’s hat twitching!

And by the way, again. Rishi Sunak said his young daughters were experts on climate change and teaching him a thing or two about it!

Bullshit, it’s lazy language.

Wisefalcon Sun 23-Apr-23 09:17:27

Just an observation here. As its only redeeming feature, "wanna" can be used for

He, she, they, I
with no changes.
Does she wanna?
Do they wanna?
Simples!

I wouldn't use it unless I were singing along with the Spice Girls. By the way are they in Charlie's line up?

nanna8 Sun 23-Apr-23 09:16:50

I thought language was constantly evolving, not staying still. We certainly have some very different items in our vocabulary these days- whoever heard of emails, computer nerds, scammers, when we were growing up ?

Just as many people write "would of" as a transcription of "would've" meaning "would have"?
I hope @VioletSky nobody would encourage or condone that sort of written English in the workplace or eg professionally as a teacher or TA.
Personally , outside the world of pop lyrics, I would not expect to see "wanna" "gonna", or "gotta" in writing.
Social media (or verbal laziness) has a lot to answer for.

Well said Foxygloves. 👏👏👏

This shouldn’t be a blame game or finger pointing at a particular demographic, or feeling smug because we recycle our yoghurt pots and grow our own veg. The U.K. as a whole, along with everywhere else, is not doing enough to combat climate change. We are one of the most nature depleted countries on the planet, with fewer and fewer insects, birds and mammals. We have allowed our waterways to become open sewers, single use plastics are almost unavoidable, and piles of it is everywhere. Government action is needed it’s not enough to reuse our shopping bags, we need to have some definite action - whether it is a crackdown on water companies or bring them into public ownership, drastically reduce the use of unnecessary single use plastics - a deposit scheme or banning their use altogether. Innovative public transport schemes - more investment and cheaper fares - or even free use extended, Forget that we have the god given right to drive or fly anywhere we want at all times, invest more in renewable energy, insist on proper insulation in new builds etc etc . Yes we are doing some of these , but it’s piecemeal and uncoordinated. Yes, individual behaviour is important whatever your age, but what XR and other environmental groups are calling for is more government action and not just sitting on our hands.

Last time we went to the Uk, admittedly before Covid, we were absolutely horrified by the amount of junk and litter thrown into streets, fields etc. Maybe the young ones could have a drive about that and tell their nannas to stop doing it. Oh- maybe they are the ones doing it ?

Well you can't blame schools for trying and let's encourage those children who do care about this stuff please

No-one could disagree with that.

Not really Mollygo I'm talking about main roads with verges instead of footpaths

Adults are driving the cars (I hope) and if they aren't aware children are chucking stuff out they need to work on checking their mirrors

But VS, are these the young people who are going to tell adults about saving the planet?
Like I said, children, young people and even older people can say a lot about how to save the planet and reduce the damage done to the environment.
They just don’t associate their actions with the damage.

They don't need a verge! They just need a road wending its way through an AONB which for some reason seems to offend them so much that they have to throw polystyrene containers from fast food outlets and fruit shot bottles into the sides of the road.

It's not just the children, they are copying their irresponsible parents.

VioletSky Sat 22-Apr-23 22:17:35

It's interesting that people take this as a personal attack of some sort

We are all responsible for the state of the planet and people wanna blame children lol

This is getting ridiculous- litter, plastics in our oceans, disposable single use plastic items everywhere - all have become an increasing problem in our lifetime.
I think all ages are aware and can share the blame but it is the hypocrisy of lecturing the older generation as if we are the only offenders and unaware of the issues at stake.

I agree with that.

Me too 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
