Do you think Angela is wise to do Strictly or not- discuss.

I don’t like to be instructed to - discuss
If it was a request, ie would you like to discuss, can we discuss, then yes, I would but not - discuss.

Don't be silly, MS. Posing a question and then adding "Discuss" is perfectly normal. Acadmics and teachers do it all the time.

It means discuss in a philosophical way and gransnetters have responded in kind.

Acadmics and teachers do it all the time.

But that is exactly what I thought, it sounds like an instruction from a lecturer!
This is a chat forum not the lecture hall or classroom (although sometimes it does feel like it).

She's lucky with her genetic inheritance.

I'm rooting for her to go as far as she sensibly can.

The leg stretch was amazing, although it was her partner that was doing it, and she looked as thugh she was holding her hip in the socket with one hand.

I think an over the knee dress would be more flattering too.

Hope I look that good!!

I agree with the dress length and would not have wanted to be sitting opposite her seeing the view when her leg was lifted.

I really admire her fitness levels.

Oh pish! It's only an instruction on an exam paper (and you usually have a choice so can ignore that 'instruction') or for homework. Used in everyday conversation, it's a suggestion.

Also, no-one on GN – except possibly the HQ-ers – can "instruct" another GNer. Anyone feeling instructed can ignore the instruction and jump into another thread.

Talk about getting huffy about nothing! 🙄🙄🙄

Anyway, good luck to Angela Rippon. I wonder if my doing my RSCDS Certificate when I was 44 and seven months pregnant would be equivalent?

At any rate, I thought: "If this baby doesn't have a good sense of rhythm it won't be my fault".

Re another thread, I took along a folding stool to sit upon between dances and exercises. When ppl asked if I was OK, I'd say Yes, just breathing for two.

I took ‘discuss’ to be a tongue-in-cheek remark from our schooldays’ test or exam papers, not an actual instruction!

Callistemon21 Tue 26-Sept-23 16:52:06

Huffy? I don't get huffy.

I do tend to ignore orders though!!

I did too! I’ve seen it often used in that humorous way.

I must be stroppy 😂

I do know how to salute, though.

Good for her but I do think she may be pushing it a bit. Only time will tell. Hope she does good.

I do think that if the OP does not put their opinion in the opening post it can seem that they will wait until seeing the majority's opinion before committing themselves.

Brilliant she did so well last week
At 78 she is a brilliant example to all of us
we may not be up to the high kicks and the splits but we can continue to enjoy life
Good Luck to her I will be watching and rooting for her

Jodieb Wed 27-Sept-23 12:27:21

Actually Angela isn't or wasn't so 'fit'. 3 or 4 years ago she was on some medical programme and she was shocked to discover she had fat stored around her organs even though she was slim.

polly123 Wed 27-Sept-23 12:35:42

Good for her! She's a great role model.

shysal Wed 27-Sept-23 12:49:57

I am sure she will be fine in Strictly, Dancing on Ice at that age would be a definite no-no, far more dangerous!

LovesBach Wed 27-Sept-23 13:14:21

Angela was trained as a ballet dancer, and has produced fitness videos in the past. She looks so lithe and supple that I am sure she regularly exercises, and on that basis, why not? Barbara Currie is also around eighty, and is as slender, flexible and shapely as a woman a third of her age. Good for Angela - she is an example to all, and I hope she wins.

Tenko Wed 27-Sept-23 13:16:43

Why shouldn’t she do it ? She’s in great shape , fit and healthy . I remember her dancing with Morcombe and Wise many many years ago . And she’s got great legs . I know ladies in their 70s and 80s who’ve done yoga for decades and are amazingly flexible.

I am the same age and not overweight but no way fit like Angela but anything like gardening or stretching up to clean cupboards results in aches and pains. I worry that she will do damage which will stay with her for a long time after the exhilaration of Strictly is over. She herself said she wished they had asked her ten years ago.

You "worry that she will do herself damage"
Really ????
I'm sure she has private health cover and the 70+ years of ballet have probably stood her in great stead.

lemsip Wed 27-Sept-23 13:32:41

didn't like the silver dress, too short and showed her tummy!
great leg action though, I can't even touch my toes.

knspol Wed 27-Sept-23 13:37:37

Great for her that she's kept herself agile enough to do such a thing. I wish her well - with just a tinge of envy about her flexibility.

silvercollie Wed 27-Sept-23 13:40:12

Nearly 30 years ago I completed a GCSE in Contemporary Dance run at my local secondary school. I was 54 at the time.
Nearly all of the rest of the class were 14 years old.
Had a higher mark than most of them too. Loved it!

missdeke Wed 27-Sept-23 13:40:44

She's a trained dancer and has kept her flexibility and fitness levels high. She has every right to be a contestant. That said I really don't like her, I find her extremely irritaing and I keep wanting to shout at her to close her mouth. I also don't like the way she is constantly hanging on poor Kai and stroking him too. I find her quite embarrassing.

Shirls52000 Wed 27-Sept-23 13:42:07

I just think good for her, she’s obviously kept active over the years and they do say if you don’t use it you lose it and she clearly uses her good health to her advantage. If I m half as fit as her when I get to that age I ll be delighted
