Do you think Angela is wise to do Strictly or not- discuss.

I now wish I had gone to ballet classes like Angela and I too may have been able to do a high kick instead of struggling to climb over a stile.

a shame this thread is titled Angela Rippon when there is already a strictly come dancing thread up and running, shame the OP didn't use it for angela.

I do think that if the OP does not put their opinion in the opening post it can seem that they will wait until seeing the majority's opinion before committing themselves.

It’s called listening to both sides of the argument.

So she might injure herself? Anyone can injure themselves at any time, it's called living a life. I ride several times a week, not a plod but a decent competition horse. I broke my wrist and a couple of fingers + damage to my rotator cuff a two years ago when I slipped on some leaves walking down a hill. I'm nearly 75 and the day I stop riding will hopefully be the day I stop breathing. I think Angela is enjoying every minute or her time in "Strictly" and I'd love her to go all the way.

Good for you, Foxie.
Angela is a mature intelligent woman , who is absolutely and totally entitled to make her own decisions, just as she is entitled to cope with the consequences, good or bad.
I really don't understand why anyone should be worried for her, unless one of the consequences is that they might have to look after her if she does suffer an injury. Somewhat unlikely, I think!

I’d like her to do well and thought her first outing was good although I agree the silver dress was a bit short and tummy revealing and not really flattering, I’m afraid. Then I heard her on the radio encouraging other people her age to dance to keep fit. I wonder how many will injure themselves if they are not as strong and flexible as she is! My husband is her age and likes to believe he is very fit for his age, but he ruptured his Achilles tendon playing badminton with our grandson, resulting in not being able to drive for many months. I think a sensible amount of caution should be taken!

Shirls52000 Wed 27-Sept-23 13:42:07

I just think good for her, she’s obviously kept active over the years and they do say if you don’t use it you lose it and she clearly uses her good health to her advantage. If I m half as fit as her when I get to that age I ll be delighted

missdeke Wed 27-Sept-23 13:40:44

She's a trained dancer and has kept her flexibility and fitness levels high. She has every right to be a contestant. That said I really don't like her, I find her extremely irritaing and I keep wanting to shout at her to close her mouth. I also don't like the way she is constantly hanging on poor Kai and stroking him too. I find her quite embarrassing.

silvercollie Wed 27-Sept-23 13:40:12

Nearly 30 years ago I completed a GCSE in Contemporary Dance run at my local secondary school. I was 54 at the time.
Nearly all of the rest of the class were 14 years old.
Had a higher mark than most of them too. Loved it!

knspol Wed 27-Sept-23 13:37:37

Great for her that she's kept herself agile enough to do such a thing. I wish her well - with just a tinge of envy about her flexibility.

lemsip Wed 27-Sept-23 13:32:41

didn't like the silver dress, too short and showed her tummy!
great leg action though, I can't even touch my toes.

I am the same age and not overweight but no way fit like Angela but anything like gardening or stretching up to clean cupboards results in aches and pains. I worry that she will do damage which will stay with her for a long time after the exhilaration of Strictly is over. She herself said she wished they had asked her ten years ago.

You "worry that she will do herself damage"
Really ????
I'm sure she has private health cover and the 70+ years of ballet have probably stood her in great stead.

Tenko Wed 27-Sept-23 13:16:43

Why shouldn’t she do it ? She’s in great shape , fit and healthy . I remember her dancing with Morcombe and Wise many many years ago . And she’s got great legs . I know ladies in their 70s and 80s who’ve done yoga for decades and are amazingly flexible.

LovesBach Wed 27-Sept-23 13:14:21

Angela was trained as a ballet dancer, and has produced fitness videos in the past. She looks so lithe and supple that I am sure she regularly exercises, and on that basis, why not? Barbara Currie is also around eighty, and is as slender, flexible and shapely as a woman a third of her age. Good for Angela - she is an example to all, and I hope she wins.

shysal Wed 27-Sept-23 12:49:57

I am sure she will be fine in Strictly, Dancing on Ice at that age would be a definite no-no, far more dangerous!

polly123 Wed 27-Sept-23 12:35:42

Good for her! She's a great role model.

Jodieb Wed 27-Sept-23 12:27:21

Actually Angela isn't or wasn't so 'fit'. 3 or 4 years ago she was on some medical programme and she was shocked to discover she had fat stored around her organs even though she was slim.

hazelnuts Wed 27-Sept-23 12:25:18

Brilliant she did so well last week
At 78 she is a brilliant example to all of us
we may not be up to the high kicks and the splits but we can continue to enjoy life
Good Luck to her I will be watching and rooting for her

Good for her but I do think she may be pushing it a bit. Only time will tell. Hope she does good.

Do you think Angela is wise to do Strictly or not- discuss.

I took ‘discuss’ to be a tongue-in-cheek remark from our schooldays’ test or exam papers, not an actual instruction!

I did too! I’ve seen it often used in that humorous way.

I must be stroppy 😂

I do know how to salute, though.

Anyway, good luck to Angela Rippon. I wonder if my doing my RSCDS Certificate when I was 44 and seven months pregnant would be equivalent?

At any rate, I thought: "If this baby doesn't have a good sense of rhythm it won't be my fault".

Re another thread, I took along a folding stool to sit upon between dances and exercises. When ppl asked if I was OK, I'd say Yes, just breathing for two.
