68, informed by a young salesman, that at my age it’s pointless spending all that money on a mattress and to consider their cheaper range
Speechless!

Email the CEO of the company and complain. Say how insulting you found his comment and how belittled and insignificant it made you feel. This was a form of ageist discrimination etc.

By way of compensation, you may get a generous reduction or even more, depending on how aggrieved you feel!

I agree with Robin202, kick up one almighty stink about the salesman’s attitude! How dare anyone imply that, because we have a few years on the clock already and in out senior years, we don’t deserve a good nights sleep?!?!?!
In fact, the very least they could do would be to gift you the mattress of your choice by way of compensation!

What?!!

Much as it pains me to say it, I think I'd tell the Daily Mail grin

Gosh ... maybe he is not cut out to be a salesman!!

Casdon Sun 20-Jul-25 08:52:06

Why didn’t you say something to him at the time whyDelilahwhy? I’d have told him to stop being patronising and said my money was as good as anybody else’s, you should not put up with being spoken to like that.

Perhaps he thought he was being helpful to a poor oap. He won’t make much money if he doesn’t get people to spend lots on the most expensive range. He shouldn’t however make value judgements which come over as being very impertinent

That's so insulting. I would complain.

A car salesman once demeaned my DD and implied that she was a 'blonde' waiting for her husband to buy her the car she was enquiring about. Big mistake. She takes no nonsense. Put him in his place and informed the owner of the dealership about their sexist salesman. Instant response, apologies and excellent service ever since.

I once had a car salesman ask if I would like my husband to take a look at it before signing on the dotted line ..... hmmm.

Husband was not even there!

😯

Good grief!!

We bought a new Hypnos bed about two years ago, we're both a bit older than 68!!
Mind you, it is very heavy, we need someone to shift it if we want to vacuum behind it.
Is this salesman being paid a backhander by a rival company?

Do as Robin202 suggests - you might even get a free mattress!

Yes, I was disregarded in the car showroom last year. I stood for ages waiting then the salesman peered round me at a man who'd just come in and asked if he could help him. I asked him if I was invisible and he said he thought the man was my husband. And?
I said I'd go to the Hyundai garage instead, but a younger salesman stepped out of his office, asked what the problem was and apologised.

I would probably have said 'Why? and then waited for his explanation.

Tell the story on their social media.

Had bedroom decorated last September and treated myself to new bed. Only one saleseperson (male) took the trouble when highlighting a particular mattress that it had to be flipped over mot like another I was interested in. He offered me an opportinity to try it for myself if I wanted. No need, knew I couldn't. He had tackfully addressed the age thing and I bought the other mattress. No other store bothered.
