Does anyone remember creamola foam?

MadHairGranny Tue 17-May-11 16:41:47

At school (in the early 50s) we used to pass each other Horlicks tablets under the desk. Ovaltine tablets were yummy too. Not sure if you can still buy them? My husband had a friend who could make a Mars bar go round the whole class by shaving off thin slices with a razor blade.

my daughter brought a tin of 'creamola foam' to our easter gathering it wasn't the real one but one someone was selling as close substitute.
verdict was that it wasn't nearly as good to me it tasted sweeter what a disappointment. I loved penny daintys, milk chews, frying pans and lucky tatties

twizzle...we had to share with lots of people but I shall never forget having a whole Mars bar to myself...magic!

twizzle Tue 17-May-11 15:03:24

supernana - you really were a lucky little girl having all those goodies.
I really liked Sherbert Lemons, did they used to cut your tongue?
I also loved pineapple chunks.
nanapippa - Sherbert pips, so yummy, and you got so many in the bag.

As a small child in '46 the "gang" clubbed together and bought a gobstopper for a penny. We took it in turns. Nice! I loved liquorice wood and pear drops. The day sweets came off rationing was a big event. Queued along the street for shop to open and chance to "go mad"and went home with a bag of Sherbert Lemons, a Mars bar AND a tube of fruit pastilles...Mother had the black one! smile

Magsie Tue 17-May-11 14:27:52

Mmmmm Fullers walnut cake, a real luxury, and highland toffee and sherbert pips (you could eat them in class as they were so tiny) smile

twizzle Tue 17-May-11 13:43:03

Magsie - what colour bobbles do you want on the end of your liquorice pipe?

Magsie Tue 17-May-11 13:38:55

Oh sweet tobacco- I'd forgotten all about that! Just needed a liquorice pipe to go with it!

twizzle Tue 17-May-11 13:32:47

I bought some Caramac Ice Cream Bars last week - but they didn't taste at all like Caramac !!!!

gma Tue 17-May-11 13:12:37

Just remembered sweet tobacco!!! Brown coloured shredded coconut in paper packets. Can you imagine today's yummie mummies giving it to their children. Why is it that when we think of all the sweets we had as children-over 50yrs ago-we can still taste them?

dida Tue 17-May-11 10:18:36

Thanks Rosiemus,
I'm off on a Caramac hunt this very minute!

I loved a sweet called, I think, a spicy potato. It was a soft type of White rock covered in Brown spice, shaped like a small potato and had a small plastic toy inside which created a collection and pinned to blazer lapels.

helshea Mon 16-May-11 22:03:00

That's the one!

jimswifein1964 Mon 16-May-11 21:43:19

Hmm, fry's five centres grin

helshea Mon 16-May-11 20:58:25

and the frys chocolate with the different flavours/coloured fillings in the same bar - my mum used to get me one every monday for a treat.

helshea Mon 16-May-11 20:56:52

The ones I remember most were the chocolate cigarettes wrapped in rice paper, or the candy ones with the red at the end ... we really thought people believed we were smoking... so un PC nowadays. Also the rainbow drops.. they were really yuk, but still ate them. And the black jacks that are still around, we used to put on our front teeth and really think that people thought we had had our teeth knocked out.. lol

Dida...Caramac - I am delighted to say - is still available! I had one recently...sooooooo sweet! Still love Sherbert Fountains and Scottish Tablet.

Does anyone remember Ice Breaker? Mint chocolate with 'shards' of blue 'ice' in the middle. Fabulous!

With the little bit of pocket money I received every Friday, I bought as much as possible e.g. 4 Fruit Salad or Black Jack chews, for 1d, or Rainbow Drops (coloured puffed wheat in a cone, didn't fill me up much but tasted wonderful - and still does today!). My favourite was Gee Whiz lemonade tablets - ghastly, but so sharp little squares I used to suck until they dissolved at the back of my mouth although you were supposed to make a lemon drink with them. AsI grew up a bit, my much-older brother used to buy me a treat at the weekend, usually a box of Maltesers. I sickened myself of them and can't look at the box without feeling nauseous.. Modern children still can't resist the lure of pink shrimps, bananas, sherbert dabs and "flying saucers" filled with sherbert - even my so-sophisticated 17 year old granndaughter loves her trips to the old-fashioned sweet shop in our nearest town when they are down on holiday! Their Mum always tells them off if she finds they have indulged in pink bootlaces!

In the 1950's ,as third from the eldest in our family of 11 children ,shop bought treats were not regular ,but I do remember liquorice root and wagon wheels !
Mostly our sweet treats were picnics, consisting of a jar of homemade jam and a loaf straight from the oven and sliced by mam or gran before we set out. The sandwiches were made at the destination ..usually several fields walk away Along with fruit from the garden and bottles of spring water from my gran's yard we were the envy of friends who joined in our outings. They would bring their own shop bought items and trade with us for a fresh jam buttie smile

Born in 36, I remember going into a shop where they sold tripe,{ugh}

and bought for 1/2 penny a bag of black peas ! We also enjoyed sticks of hard black liquorice, happy memories !
