Does anyone remember creamola foam?

nannyeileen Fri 13-May-11 17:23:25

Do you mean creamola pudding?

Doris Fri 13-May-11 19:06:18

Oh I remember that one and my mouth is filling up with the foamy feeling thinking about it!! Great drink! Goodensss knows what the ingredients were and they would probably be banned in this day and age.

nanafrancis Fri 13-May-11 19:09:30

Creamola pudding is a 50/50 mix of custard powder and ground rice. I looked it up on the internet to see if it was still available as my children and I used to love it and that was what I found.

Notsogrand Fri 13-May-11 20:08:42

What about Cheese Whizz? Probably pure chemicals, but we loved it!

Magsie Fri 13-May-11 22:06:45

I used to beg my mum to buy Creamola Foam but she said it was "rubbish" and a glass of milk would do me more good! Other things that came under the heading of "rubbish" were Lucky Bags and Parma Violet sweets.

Wow yes I remember Cremola Foam!!!! Mixing it up in a glass of water and drinking it quickly before the bubbles subsided. Had dreadful burps afterwards!!!!! A bit like drinking lemon flavoured Andrews Liver Salts. How about Palm toffee bars? and Jamesons Raspberry Ruffles ( a Friday treat when I first started work in the early 1960s) How about Corona being delivered to your house every week, Cherryade was my favourite and Lime and Lemon.

Doris Mon 16-May-11 11:33:06

Magsie - I think your Mum was probably spot on but it didn't stop me drinking the stuff. Parma Violets?!* Yuch! Yuch!

nanafrancis Mon 16-May-11 11:56:45

My mum banned Swizzles sweets in our house. They were made locally. I made up for the ban by befriending a girl whose father worked at Swizzles and always brought some products home. Love hearts were my favourite!

twizzle Mon 16-May-11 12:01:15

Spangles were my favourite.

Magsie Mon 16-May-11 12:01:19

Oh yes, Swizzles! Refreshers too! My mum always thought I should buy a nice block of chocolate but you got a lot more "rubbish" for your pocket money. Talking of Love Hearts, you can still get them but they have brought the messages up to date. The mind boggles as to what they might say!

nanafrancis Mon 16-May-11 12:04:49

Oh thanks for that info Magsie, I shall buy some love hearts and see next time I'm in the UK!
I liked Old English Spangles to and once got thrown out of a sweet shop by an old Welsh lady when I asked for some in her shop in Llanfair PG. When my father went in to see what was wrong the old lady said she'd never stock anything 'english'!

I remember Cremola Foam Drink too, yes it was lovely, but i think it was the magical way it foamed up rather than the taste itself that attracted us children to it.

I remember Nutto Toffee, the corner shop where i lived used to sell it by the square because at 6d it was too expensive for most kids to buy when they only got perhaps a shilling or two for pocketmoney that used to have to last all week,

Also satin cushions?? Tiny little pearlised sweets that were shaped like a cushion and had a perfumey flavour, again to expensive to buy regularly but if i would ask for them if i was offered a treat

Magsie Mon 16-May-11 14:25:13

Just been googling Love Hearts! Lots of the messages are the same but you can now get "Text me," "Fax me" & "Email me."

dida Mon 16-May-11 14:37:42

Five Boys Chocolate, Scottish tablet, Highland Toffee, Sherbet Fountains, Love Hearts, and in my teens, the late lamented Caramac.

Born in 36, I remember going into a shop where they sold tripe,{ugh}

and bought for 1/2 penny a bag of black peas ! We also enjoyed sticks of hard black liquorice, happy memories !

proudgrandma2005 Mon 16-May-11 17:07:04

In the 1950's ,as third from the eldest in our family of 11 children ,shop bought treats were not regular ,but I do remember liquorice root and wagon wheels !
Mostly our sweet treats were picnics, consisting of a jar of homemade jam and a loaf straight from the oven and sliced by mam or gran before we set out. The sandwiches were made at the destination ..usually several fields walk away Along with fruit from the garden and bottles of spring water from my gran's yard we were the envy of friends who joined in our outings. They would bring their own shop bought items and trade with us for a fresh jam buttie smile

With the little bit of pocket money I received every Friday, I bought as much as possible e.g. 4 Fruit Salad or Black Jack chews, for 1d, or Rainbow Drops (coloured puffed wheat in a cone, didn't fill me up much but tasted wonderful - and still does today!). My favourite was Gee Whiz lemonade tablets - ghastly, but so sharp little squares I used to suck until they dissolved at the back of my mouth although you were supposed to make a lemon drink with them. AsI grew up a bit, my much-older brother used to buy me a treat at the weekend, usually a box of Maltesers. I sickened myself of them and can't look at the box without feeling nauseous.. Modern children still can't resist the lure of pink shrimps, bananas, sherbert dabs and "flying saucers" filled with sherbert - even my so-sophisticated 17 year old granndaughter loves her trips to the old-fashioned sweet shop in our nearest town when they are down on holiday! Their Mum always tells them off if she finds they have indulged in pink bootlaces!

rosiemus Mon 16-May-11 20:34:11

Dida...Caramac - I am delighted to say - is still available! I had one recently...sooooooo sweet! Still love Sherbert Fountains and Scottish Tablet.

Does anyone remember Ice Breaker? Mint chocolate with 'shards' of blue 'ice' in the middle. Fabulous!

helshea Mon 16-May-11 20:56:52

The ones I remember most were the chocolate cigarettes wrapped in rice paper, or the candy ones with the red at the end ... we really thought people believed we were smoking... so un PC nowadays. Also the rainbow drops.. they were really yuk, but still ate them. And the black jacks that are still around, we used to put on our front teeth and really think that people thought we had had our teeth knocked out.. lol

helshea Mon 16-May-11 20:58:25

and the frys chocolate with the different flavours/coloured fillings in the same bar - my mum used to get me one every monday for a treat.

jimswifein1964 Mon 16-May-11 21:43:19

Hmm, fry's five centres grin

helshea Mon 16-May-11 22:03:00
