Perhaps I'll have to experiment as to when I eat it - maybe the full moon was the problem!

I first experienced Garlic in my early 20s when I was working as a "Mothers help." The "Mum" had spiked the roasting lamb joint with slivers of garlic. The smell was divine!

I have loved and used it ever since, now as a vegetarian I still use it lot. It is essential to a Tabbouleh salad with olive oil and lemon juice dressing and heaps of parsley.
I hope I never develop such an allergy.
I also can confirm its sucess in repelling vampires.

Cannot stand garlic and don't use it in cooking seems to upset my stomach ..although many things these days,, especialy sauces seem to have either Garlic, chilli or ginger in them! I don't mind a bit of chilli but don't like ginger in food, (but like ginger biscuits)!!! hmmm confused but the I like mushrooms but not mushroom soup!

wine does not contain egg yolk!

Oh really? 14 1/2 stone 5 8tall. Hardlygrin

Been thinking about your egg yolk problem Jeni. That's a bad one, sooo many nice things have egg yolks. You must be very svelte and trim.

Oh, and the witch thing. I have been taken for one on several occasions - perhaps that explains it!

I get bloating, nausea and then a violent headache. It's the actual garlic that's the problem. Having a bit of success with leaving it whole or big enough bits to pick out, although this doesn't work either if I drink wine. Luckily it's only wine!

A small one. I can tolerate about 1/8th of an egg yolk, more and I'm really I'll! Profiteroles are a no-no. Unfortunately because I love them. Along with eclairs etc.

jeni, can you eat cake that has whole egg in it? If not...... AAARRRGGHHHH!

jeni Fri 05-Oct-12 14:48:02

Garlic intolerance! I can cope with my egg yolk intolerance , but I don't think I could cope, with a garlic one.
How would I keep the witches and vampires away?

of, not if

I like the flavour if garlic but I don't use it much because I always used to get a 'sore' throat after eating it. Weird. I avoid raw onions for the same reason, but cooked ones are allright.

Is it all garlic or just raw? I love garlic and think it is pretty essential to a lot of dishes. If it is raw garlic then I add a bit of sugar when I crush it and that helps. If it is a big garlic taste like aioli then I resort to Gaviscon!

It has been popular for centuries because of its flavour and its medicinal properties. It does make a difference to the flavour of dishes if it is not included but if it is causing problems, then really there is no choice but to leave it out. Apart from contact dermatitis, which presumably is not your problem if Mr Dumpling does the cooking, migraine is the commonest adverse reaction, although there can be other effects. Really the only way to tell is to have a skin test, but you could try not eating garlic for a while and see if whatever symptoms you were experiencing have disappeared.

I am in the very fortunate position of having a wonderful DH who wonderfully cooks. However, I am reluctantly coming to the conclusion that I have an intolerance of garlic. And he is an ardent follower of Mary Berry. Ms Berry uses garlic in ALL her savouries.

Why is garlic so popular, is it just a fad? And does it really make so much difference if it's left out?
