What can I do? Just been having a big clear out and thrown nearly all my jars of sauces, mustards, pickles, etc out. Most three-quarters full. They all read 'once opened use within x number of days'. There's only two of us, how can I use 210g of horseradish sauce in 28 days or 250g of dijon mustard in 6 weeks?
Why can't I buy them in mini pots? Or can I? I've come on GN 'cause if anyone knows GNetters will smile

Have I offended you, Nanado? That certainly wasn't my intention - I thought I was sharing the joke...confused

Nanado Fri 11-Jan-13 23:10:39

Certainly not Ana ... You were sharing the joke and I was just being light hearted and weekendish and a touch frivolous smile

j07 Fri 11-Jan-13 23:12:20

hmm

You are being a little bit too chilled Nanado. No one knows WTF you are on about. smile

I think EU rules changed use by dates a few years back. I'm sure that the S.O. who used to work for a pharmaceutical company said they reduced use be dates dramatically.

JO best ignore me. hmm

I loved my ex MIL's strawberry and rhubarb jam best when it had started to ferment because it tasted delicious. I throw out those small jars of spices when and often before they are out of date because they lose their taste.

Finished a jar of Helman's mayonnaise the other day. Use by date: Feb 2012. so only eleven months over. It was fine (I looked at it, I sniffed it, I ate it). We're fine.

Stansgran, just spotted your post. I am so sorry to hear that you have Parkinson's disease. I hope you will be able to enjoy GN again. If you start a new thread on the subject I am sure you will find lots of advice and support. flowers

I always ignore dates on food, but yesterday I did clear a cupboard of cereals and crispbreads dating back to 2011 and before, some of which were opened.

Ella46 Sat 12-Jan-13 09:01:19

shysal I think stansgran was just explaining what PD stands for in a previous post.

Bags Sat 12-Jan-13 09:25:41

Thinking on't, it's quite likely I didn't even open the mayonnaise until after it's use by date. I don't use mayonnaise very often but I do tend to keep a jar in the cupboard (unopened; it goes in the fridge after it's opened) for when I do need it.

Looked fine. Tasted fine. Was fine. Hey ho.

Aarrgh! apostrophe fever again! This is getting bad!

Elegran Sat 12-Jan-13 10:43:53

Nanado I do hope your loose hand can be reattached. It would be most inconvenient to lose it.

Nanado Sat 12-Jan-13 10:53:57

Thanks Elegran it would be a sad loss, if I was to lose the loose hand indeed grin

Movedalot Sat 12-Jan-13 11:05:32

Nanado I might be the only one who appreciates your little ramble last night but just want you to know that someone does. I love people who don't take themselves too seriously - go for it!

Does anyone else think jam goes off quicker these days? I keep it in the fridge and it goes mouldy but I am sure it never used to when we kept in in a cupboard many years ago.

Elegran Sat 12-Jan-13 11:09:59

They put less sugar in it these days partly because of concern about us eating too much sugar, partly (and more likely) because sugar is expensive.

j07 Sat 12-Jan-13 12:15:46

I think it's the government - telling them to cut down.

Things won't keep with less sugar. hmm

j07 Sat 12-Jan-13 12:16:27

Same with the Oxford marmalade feetlebaum mentioned.

j07 Sat 12-Jan-13 12:17:01

I appreciated it Movedalot.

Movedalot Sat 12-Jan-13 12:31:35

Glad to find another likemind J07

annodomini Sat 12-Jan-13 12:41:16

I prefer the jam with less sugar. Waitrose jam is, for me, too sweet, whereas Aldi jam is just about right.

Jodi Sat 12-Jan-13 15:49:58

I did to nanado smoothies have the same affect in me! wink

Jodi Sat 12-Jan-13 15:51:25
