For a chocolate fudge version of petallus' syrup pudding, add cocoa to the sponge mixture and mix cocoa into the syrup in the bottom of the bowl. Serve with vanilla ice cream, or cream - whatever suits you.

Custard - home made or cold out of the tin - I don't care! Ambrosia creamed rice does it for me too.

Cauliflower cheese ( with the cheese a little bit burnt on the top) hot buttered crumpets with butter and lemon curd ! Yummy.

MIL pie crust with mashed potato and turnip ( MIL died 8 yrs ago) hot buttered toast with lurpak.

Yes.
Use the microwave to soften, not melt, the butter so it easily creams with the sugar. Then add flour, eggs and milk and whisk up for a minute or two. Put syrup in bottom of greased bowl, add mixture and microwave for 5 to 7 minutes.

Easily as nice as one cooked in oven or steamed though not such a golden colour. More moist though.

The farmer's market I go to is just in front of the main market. There is a very strange bar with life size model animals where I have my coffee and croissant and plan my menus. I still prefer Waitrose.

I agree about Geneva being a bit of a grim place, but a visit to the farmer's markets make it worthwhile. The best tomato I've ever eaten in my life came from there.

Just eaten a slow cooked boeuf Provençal- posh version of beef stew .been cooking in the slow cooker most of today -6 outside. With baked potatoes and glazed carrots. Personally would prefer bread and butter pudding rice pud or anything else mentioned but DH is having to be persuaded that I need to book into an airport hotel on Sunday rather than miss an early plane on Monday and it' s his comfort food. Man' s heart stomach way to and all that.
BTW any one in Geneva airport on Mon give me a wave please as I am in for a lonely few days emergency babysit but DGCs at school most of the time and SIL and DD in Davos. Gransnet may be my lifeline- Geneva is such a grim place money money money

Olives – big. black juicy Kalamata or little green ones stuffed with anchovies, almonds or even peppers. It's one of the reasons I'd like separate beds – so I can sit up and gorge on olives (sometime with bread and butter if I haven't eaten during the day and maybe a glass of wine even I have already indulged) in the middle of the night.

The lamb curry with roast shoulder. In fact a slow roast shoulder with mint sauce!
If it wasn't for the fact DD is hopefully( snow permitting) coming this weekend I'd go for that!(she's pesco veggie)

At this time of year, definitely a home made pie! Cheese and onion or meat and potato. The comfort comes from preparing it and checking the oven to see if it's ready yet.

My eldest grandson always asks for toad in the hole with onion gravy, and challenges me to make the Yorkshire pudding rise increasingly higher each time.

Macaroni cheese. Filling, comforting and very tasty if made with good strong cheddar. Just made myself feel hungry all over again. I must leave this thread.

Well actually, if we're talking savoury comfort food, then it's the stuff of my childhood: pea soup made with a ham shank, anything with lentils, lamb stew with pearl barley, home made mushroom soup, herring/cod roe on toast, potato hash with a suet crust pastry top. [drooling emoticon]
(Son has just departed for the local takeaway, to return with a biriyani and korma sauce because I can't be bothered to cook tonight as there are only two of us in the house.) Yummy!

Home made, old fashioned puddings. Think jam roly poly, creamy rice pudding, treacle sponge - or, best of all, bead and butter pudding with cream AND ice cream. Ooops, may have got a little carried away there. blush

Cottage or shepherd's pie. Baked potato with lots of butter (and perhaps cheese). Hot, buttered toast. I'm not one for puds.

Its below zero outside. Has been all day. I am just about to eat one of my favourite types of comfort food. Baked apple and custard. Hits the spot on an evening like this. Other items on my list would be home made pizza, toad in the hole and lasagne.
So, without any diet guilt or any nonsense of that kind... what are your favourite comfort foods?
