The tinned kind I hear its also highly prized as a gift in South Korea and they make something called American Stew with it that is highly popular... my OH loves the stuff and has it in his packed lunch sandwiches at least twice a week.. I can remember my Mum making me spam fritters when I was young but nowadays its far too salty and fatty for my taste.

How about you? have you? do you? would you own up if you did? any recipes you'd care to impart?

j08 Yes.

Ana Fri 20-Sept-13 23:07:22

You'd usually strain that, surely though...?

j08 Fri 20-Sept-13 22:46:36

absent is that any worse than simmering a chicken carcass for a couple of hours to get all the goodness out for stock?

Galen Fri 20-Sept-13 22:45:01

I LOVE grilled spam, eaten with a grilled tomato and a grilled apple!smile

absent Fri 20-Sept-13 22:33:16

Nelliemoser It's also found in cheap sausages and burgers. My father always used to say, "You get what you pay for 99% of the time."

Nelliemoser Fri 20-Sept-13 22:20:28

I used to enjoy grilled spam.

glassortwo Fri 20-Sept-13 21:18:07

I like to be able to identify what I eat.

glassortwo Fri 20-Sept-13 21:17:20

shock no thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

feetlebaum Mechanically recovered meat starts with all the bits that haven't been used – gristle, fat, cartilage and so on.

feetlebaum Fri 20-Sept-13 20:28:37

That's how I gnaw a chop bone... it all gets made into a paste when you eat it anyway!

absent Fri 20-Sept-13 20:20:26

j08 No it's not a bit like gnawing a chop bone. Animal carcasses are pulverised and made into a paste which is then added to the meat mixture for spam or other things such as hot dogs.

feetlebaum Fri 20-Sept-13 17:24:01

AH - words to look out for: 'Healthy', 'natural', 'Lite' -- I never buy anything with any of those words on the pack...

AlieOxon Fri 20-Sept-13 17:05:40

I like grilled spam!

Lona Fri 20-Sept-13 16:30:53

I must admit I like a home made, corned beef hash in the winter. it's very tasty.

feetlebaum Fri 20-Sept-13 12:50:06

I have a book with a recipe for Spam Masala, which is rather nice!

I'm rather fond of the stuff myself, although I don't use it very often.

Corned beef is fine, too - a close relative of the salt beef OI used to eat on rye bread at the Nosh Bar... mit a gless tea!

Charleygirl Fri 20-Sept-13 10:54:16

I had no idea that one could buy Spam nowadays. I hate it and corned beef. Spam I think takes 1st prize. I do not know why but we rarely had either when I was a child.

tanith Fri 20-Sept-13 10:32:22

Can you buy Spam ready sliced then? doesn't it only come in tins?... liking all the comments so far ...

j08 Fri 20-Sept-13 09:53:07

I only buy the ready sliced. grin

Lona Fri 20-Sept-13 09:41:37

Yes, and so does corned beef j08 smile

j08 Fri 20-Sept-13 09:39:27

It probably slices more easily cold though! (just thought of that!)

Elegran Fri 20-Sept-13 09:32:19

Same syndrome as keeping jams and pickles in the fridge, jings. It is the result of brainwashing by the hygeine police.

Unless you prefer it chilled, like white wine. That is individual choice.

j08 Fri 20-Sept-13 09:24:14

What's with this keeping tins in the fridge? Have you not got cupboards?

j08 Fri 20-Sept-13 09:21:48

I remember the ends of cooked meats being sold cheaply. I bought them. A bargain brought such a satisfying glow in those hard-up days.
