The tinned kind I hear its also highly prized as a gift in South Korea and they make something called American Stew with it that is highly popular... my OH loves the stuff and has it in his packed lunch sandwiches at least twice a week.. I can remember my Mum making me spam fritters when I was young but nowadays its far too salty and fatty for my taste.

How about you? have you? do you? would you own up if you did? any recipes you'd care to impart?

It is strange what in one country is considered upmarket and desirable when in another is is thought of as the opposite. I once went to Brazil where it was posh to have plastic plates. It makes you start to think of what do we think of as desirable which other countries think of as being cheap and tacky.

DS's nursery have recently introduced spam fritters to their menu... <mixed feelings>

I am a secret spam lover, having been made spam fritters as a treat as a child. I rarely eat it as I've no idea what's in it, and if I did I'm sure I would never touch the stuff again. However the occasional Spam sandwich is my secret vice.blush

In our youth we used to love tins of Tudor Queen; didn't even count as Spam as it was mostly potato starch with a bit of pink colouring added. We travelled all round Europe on Tudor Queen, packet soup, onions and duty free ciggies smile.

I don't think I'd want to serve it to small children if I'm honest as its very salty but having said that my youngest granddaughter tasted a sliver while I was making Oh his sandwiches and then asked her Mum why she couldn't have it as it was yummy.. I won't tell you what my daughter said but it started with c and ended with p!!

Grannyeggs Thu 19-Sept-13 13:55:36

j08 Thu 19-Sept-13 13:57:44

Grannyeggs Thu 19-Sept-13 14:12:21

Actually I'm a bit weak and wobbly, but I am trying! Thanks jo

I've just had two Ryvitas with Spam on, it is a regular lunch for me. I love it!!
I always have a tin in the cupboard, and if I make an omelette I always chop some Spam up and chuck it in.

PRINTMISS Thu 19-Sept-13 16:15:26

You can also make spam Toad in the Hole - I now occasionally make that with the Lite Spam, kidding myself that I am doing the 'healthy eating' bit. It is lovely with baked beans (the ones with less sugar! and therefore more expensive) and saute potatoes! The healthy eaters are going to have a ball with this.

Grannyeggs Thu 19-Sept-13 16:19:50

Stop!!! I am veryhungry and am having soup for dinner! Will be waiting tomorrow morning outside Waitrose when it opens at 7.30 to get my Spam fix, spam and eggs for breakfast!

j08 Thu 19-Sept-13 16:35:14

Are you gonna have the strength to stagger along there?! hmm

wink

kittylester Thu 19-Sept-13 16:40:14

I hate it! smile

DH was really excited to see sandwich spread in Aldi and insisted on buying 2 bottles of the stuff. grin

ninathenana Thu 19-Sept-13 16:40:36

I have a tin in the fridge now ! Always a good standby for sarnies.
SiL makes a tasty pasta dish with chopped spam.

Tegan Thu 19-Sept-13 17:28:24

I saw the sandwich spread as well! Was sorely tempted but I'm not eating bread again and it's not the same on rice cakes sad.

I hate spam and especially loathed spam fritters which appeared on the school lunch menu from time to time throughout my teens.

Just for your information, original-recipe spam contains per 100g (31/2 oz):
27 g fat of which 10g is saturated fat
310 Calories
and 1369 mg sodium, i.e. 57% of the recommended daily intake.

Lite spam has 33% fewer calories and 50% less fat – but it does contain mechanically separated chicken. (If you don't know what that is, count your blessings.)

There is also a low-sodium spam which contains 25% less sodium than original-recipe spam but which is still high in sodium.

I have no idea about spam sandwich spread and truly don't want to go there.

I refused to write a spam cook book as I knew I couldn't bear to test the recipes.

I like Spam - my mum used to call it 'luncheon meat' (we only had ham at weekends) and I also like corned beef, much to the disgust of my very snobby OH.

j08 Fri 20-Sept-13 08:59:32

Love corned beef!

Absent if you know anything horrible about that, do NOT tell me!

j08 Fri 20-Sept-13 09:02:49

Actually, I would love to know just what is bad about recovered meat? Is n' t it only like picking up a lamb chop bone and gnawing the last of the delicious but otherwise unreachable meat from it? Just done more efficiently by machine?

shysal Fri 20-Sept-13 09:09:04

I grew up with a mother who attempted to be posh, so we went one up from Spam to Plumrose chopped ham with pork. My brother and I used to call it 'plopped ham with chalk', sounded so appetizing!
