Evening all, I have long been a fan of Brains faggots for an easy option meal, always served with mashed potatoes, carrots and peas.

However a recent supper proved a bit short on potatoes, so we had faggots, oven chips, peas and gravy!

Oh my word! What is it about that combo that seems so naughty? Mind you, I've always felt a sort of "naughty" thrill about chips with gravy! Seems sort of "decadent" some how!

A bit like the combination of ice cream, honey and flaked almonds........

And I suppose I should confess to bacon and fried egg sandwiches, on thick sliced white bread with.............. Branston Pickle! (Note, only eat when alone, or with someone who loves you very much/has restricted vision)

grin

Chip butties, white bread, lashings of butter, chips.........and mushy peas, not the chippy style ones, just the dried peas soaked overnight sort, boiled to a mush lashings of butter and seasoned with the forbidden to me salt. Oh yum.

Last night: scrambled egg, baked beans, crispy fried bread and brown sauce.
Not a vegetable in sight. Yummy!

Chip butties - pappy white bread, thickly spread with butter, loaded with homemade chips and then smothered in salt, vinegar and brown sauce. blush

Sadly, it doesn't work with gf bread sad

Flower when I was little (ish) and mum was at work on a Saturday, my dad would make thick toast with butter, and we would dunk into our mugs of tea!
So elegant.........................but so good!

My DDHs not so guilty secret is freshly baked rolls with butter and smothered in condensed milk. We used have orgies of this when courting.

I love hot buttered toast dipped in real cocoa. My father used to make this for me when a child. It sounds revolting but is delicious.

Shepherds pie with lots of well browned cheese on top served with mashed turnip (with butter). Turnip in this case is the large orange 'sheep food' type not the poncy small white ones. Best after a good frost.
Yummy !
I agree with you Rosiebee - chocolate brownies cooked or un-cooked !

Pork shops are my favourite, Saveloys, Peas pudding, Stotti cake and of course Belly pork smile

Rosiebee Wed 06-Nov-13 16:14:09

Sausage, chips and gravy + white bread and butter.
On the sweet side, the baking bowl, when I've just made a batch of chocolate brownies. Amazing how much is left in the bowl blush.

Hi I am a softy southerner and until quite recently never understood my husbands northern love of pie chips and gravy, but you are never too old to change your opinion, naughty but yummy.

What is your preference Galen?

Galen Tue 05-Nov-13 22:15:57

Macs weeks! Too bland.

Agus Tue 05-Nov-13 22:09:38

I've just asked Mr A if he has ever eaten faggots, his reply "oh, no, no, no, I,ve seen them". When I explained what the ingredients were he still says no.
We often eat liver and onions with gravy confused. No sense of adventure some peoplegrin

Agus Tue 05-Nov-13 21:59:18

MacSween's Haggis, neeps and tatties with beef gravy!!! Oh joy. We also have grilled slices of haggis on toast. Yum.

I have heard, obviously, about the deep fried mars bar but honestly have never seen them advertised anywhere. I read though that Nigella Lawson was working with a Scot who told her about them and she became hooked. They sound awful.

I've heard of faggots but never tasted them. Can report, never seen them in Waitrose in this part of Scotland.

Galen Tue 05-Nov-13 19:40:31

No way! Haggis is MUCH nicer. It has groats rather than bread and the spicing is different.

dustyangel Tue 05-Nov-13 19:17:42

Aren't faggots baby haggis?

Seriously before I stopped eating meat, I used to love faggots, had to be Brains, had to be served with peas, mash and gravy. The other thing I miss is liver served the same way.

mrsmopp Tue 05-Nov-13 19:11:21

I used to get a tray of chips from the chippie, they were then covered in curry sauce. I loved it. Not had it for years though. This thread brought it back to my mind.
Do they really eat deep fried mars bars in batter in Scotland? Think of the calories!!

Thistledoo Tue 05-Nov-13 19:01:03

Oh that's cleared that one up then. I thought faggots were made from brains of some description, the mind was boggling. Never seen faggots here, we don't have Waitrose. Maybe I could start a little business here in the highlands.

KatyK Tue 05-Nov-13 18:28:31

I'm always trying to 'be good' but once in a while the crisp sandwich urge is too great ! grin

Nelliemoser Tue 05-Nov-13 18:23:58

I have two large packs of Aldi hand fried crisps on a shelf behind me.

Must be good though! Why though!

Nelliemoser Tue 05-Nov-13 18:22:00

As a vege and a generally healthy eater, I do get occasional cravings for cheesy whatsits or other MSG flavoured delights.

whenim64 Tue 05-Nov-13 18:19:40

Oh, stop it!!!! I'm already comfort eating, now I've got crisp butties beckoning me!

bikergran Tue 05-Nov-13 18:17:33

wish they would have called them some thing else other than "Brain's "hmm just puts me off some how..I know that Brains is the manufacturer

Lona Tue 05-Nov-13 18:12:04

Yes!! Crisp butties! Loads of butter and plain crisps for me, I love the crunchyness smile

Anne58 Tue 05-Nov-13 18:09:27

Oh KatyK Thick white sliced bread, buttered and filled with cheese and onions crisps used to be my Saturday lunch treat for years! Still like them now!

KatyK Tue 05-Nov-13 18:06:21

I love Brains faggots. And all the pubs round here sell bowls of cheesey chips. My guilty pleasure is cheese and onion crisp sandwiches (I know!).
