Evening all, I have long been a fan of Brains faggots for an easy option meal, always served with mashed potatoes, carrots and peas.

However a recent supper proved a bit short on potatoes, so we had faggots, oven chips, peas and gravy!

Oh my word! What is it about that combo that seems so naughty? Mind you, I've always felt a sort of "naughty" thrill about chips with gravy! Seems sort of "decadent" some how!

A bit like the combination of ice cream, honey and flaked almonds........

And I suppose I should confess to bacon and fried egg sandwiches, on thick sliced white bread with.............. Branston Pickle! (Note, only eat when alone, or with someone who loves you very much/has restricted vision)

grin

Everytime Im in Neath I go into the market and have faggots, peas, tatties and gravy.

And yes to chips with the likes - I love mince and chips and peas and gravy.

I like chips with gravy, but a friend of mine adores chips with cheese. [confused ]

The big fry up, piles of mashed potatoes with lashings of butter, bacon butties, cheese cheese and more cheese. Increasingly, chocolate - no wonder my trousers are tight.

Brains faggots! I hadn't realised they were still around.

Used to have them a lot about 40 years ago. I can still remember the delicious taste and lovely gravy.

What a pity I turned vegetarian 30 years ago! sad

I did always think calling a faggot 'Brains' was a bit offputting though. smile

glammanana Tue 05-Nov-13 08:36:30

I love faggots and even though I make my own on a regular basis they never ever have the taste or gravy consistency of "Brains" I bought some afew weeks ago when on off which gave 50% free delish !!
DS1 will have a full breakfast and cover in cheese popped under grill for two minutes until it all bubbles, there is no accounting for taste grin

I love faggots too but haven't seen them for years, I suppose they aren't "posh" enough for Waitrose!

As for cheese, yesterday I bought a beautiful cauliflower from Lidl (so fresh) and smothered it in cheese sauce................heaven, and only me to eat it! grin

glammanana Tue 05-Nov-13 09:28:57

Oh Lona I do love the fresh veg in Lidl always seems to have just come out of the ground.

Lona Tue 05-Nov-13 09:55:32

glam I daren't go in with a trolley now, it's like an Aladdin's cave, I just carry a basket!

Nelliemoser Tue 05-Nov-13 10:06:30

Yuk! Chips with gravy, means soggy chips to me. Please No! Crisp fresh chips with mayo it's the only way.

Ariadne Tue 05-Nov-13 11:40:04

Chips every time!

Anne58 Tue 05-Nov-13 12:33:47

Anne58 Tue 05-Nov-13 13:54:09

On another forum of which I was a member, there was someone who used to have Brains faggots as a side dish with their Christmas lunch shock

Lona Tue 05-Nov-13 14:59:39

Oh phoenix I've just been to Waitrose too! Bugger!

Anne58 Tue 05-Nov-13 15:02:45

The other week in Morrisons they were on offer, a pack of 6 were.......87p!!!!!!!

Tegan Tue 05-Nov-13 15:13:56

You know, I've been fancying some of those for ages [and I don't eat much meat]. Saw some in Morrisons in August and was tempted then. Think I'll have to get some for this weekend now.

Thistledoo Tue 05-Nov-13 15:36:49

WHAT ARE faggots? Is it something like haggis. I'm curious.
I hate haggis by the way. confused

Anne58 Tue 05-Nov-13 15:46:50

They are a bit like a large meatball, and come in a rich sauce (Mr Brains do, anyway).

You can make them from scratch yourself, but it hardly seems worth the effort. One of the main ingredients is liver. Mr P isn't very fond of liver, but he loves faggots!

FlicketyB Tue 05-Nov-13 18:06:21

Waitrose sell faggots - and also individual steak and kidney puddings, in twos, which is what DH and I had for lunch (our main meal as we had been out all morning and got home late, with lots of cabbage and extra gravy.

Faggots are made from liver, minced up with onions, sage, breadcrumbs and suet, and possible some egg to bind it - at least that is my recipe for them - but it is so much easier to just buy them.

Now macaroni cheese, really cheesy, with a side order of two rashers of really tasty crispy bacon, and tomato and cheese risotto. Gorgeous.
