Mustard or horseradish sauce is good under the cheese. Just enough so as not to blow your head off. Unless you like having your head blown off byhot food of course.
I don't dare use Worcester sauce it has to be Henderson's relish nowadays! DD is now an adopted Sheffielder.

Slices of camembert on toast, melted slightly in the microwave and topped with a little onion marmalade. Yum.

Cranks wholemeal from Waitrose transforms cheese on toast into a meal.
With....
Worcester sauce.

For 20 years, from 1979, DH was dairy intolerant resulting in migraine and urticaria (itchy welts) . We have no idea why, but the intolerance stopped and now he just has to be cautious not to have dairy cream.

I can sympathise with what you are going through it took us years to discover what the intolerance was.

Can have a bit of goats or buffalo now and then but if go all in on it it really does not agree..made pizza last week with mild goats cheese, loved it but not the mega GERDS/IBS/ heartburn/eczema after ..

Agus Wed 12-Feb-14 21:14:10

Would a hard goats cheese work for you YaYa?

Oh what tears we had after collecting eldest grandson from morning school, obviously hungry as when walked in the door he said ooo that smells good, your cooking nana...but steak and kidney wouldn't be ready until teatime and mummy back from work...so he decided cheese on toast not a cheese sandwich. All went well until granddad put cheese on toast to cook under the grill, he did not want the cheese cooked! Guess everyones definition of cheese on toast is different. Sad I cannot eat it in any form any more as am dairy intolerant..

I could live on toasted cheese. Yum. DH does the Worcester sauce thing. I like a sprinkle of celery salt.

POGS Wed 12-Feb-14 20:55:15

Love cheese on toast.

I like it with onion, with pickle and pasta bolognese sauce smeared underneath the cheese.
Lovely when it has all bubbled together.

My favour bit is the crispy edge, that's when the child in you comes out and you leave your best bits to the last. smile

Melt the cheese first with ale( or milk if you must) stir in mustard, Worcester sauce and if you haven't an allergy like me , an egg,a little cornflower., then spread on toast and grill with sliced tomato. On top.

merlotgran Wed 12-Feb-14 20:49:15

Mmmm. You have just reminded me how nice cheese on toast is. Just had tea, but I guess I will be having a slice or two for breakfast tomorrow smile

Dragonfly1 Wed 12-Feb-14 20:22:30

Oh bum, now have to go and make cheese on toast!

rosesarered Wed 12-Feb-14 20:16:48

There is something so comforting about simple cheese on toast, don't know what it is, but if I am hungry and want something quickly it's fantastic. My own favourite is Wensleydale cheese with a dab of mustard and chopped spring onions, and then toast it, glorious!Oh no, am hungry now, shouldn't have typed this.
