Does anyone remember the little Kunzel cakes? Absolutely delicious !

Oh yes, I remember the Kunzle cakes, I loved them. When I was a child a shop cake was a luxury, we would choose a Fullers layer, seemed like heaven! Nowadays I prefer home made.

Yes I did wonder about the spelling shysal. They had so much chocolate cream in them for a small cake. I can remember the shop where my mother used to buy them for a treat when we went into town. She didn't realise she wasn't doing me any favours !

I didn't even notice the spelling difference Greenfinch, you may be right. Both forms appear when Googled.

I find that quite interesting shysal.Perhaps different spellings were used in different countries .It sounds like a German name. Totally unimportant and irrelevant to this thread really but I am very interested in language.

Yes, I remember Kunzle cakes too. Very sickly, but my friend and I used to by a box of four and have two each at work. No wonder I have a weight problem now!!

Yes, Greenfinch I remember the Kunzel cakes too [surely the German spelling would be that as the other spelling would be French?]I remember the first time I had any was at a Christmas party when about 10 years old at school.It seemed very adult and sophisticated to eat one[and delicious.] Don't know what I would make of them now though.The russian slices that I mention in the first post on the thread, were all bits and bobs of cake welded together with rum essence in a slice with icing on top, they were heaven.Maybe nobody remembers them or they were just a local thing? You can still buy custard slices though [I bought 2 last week in Tesco.]Rum babas used to be popular in the 70's, and I downed quite a few of those as well.

Just made a rather nice coffee cake.

Had a hot cup of tea with it and watched some tennis from a wet Paris - bliss.

rosesarered - Christian Kunzle came from Switzerland and his lovely cakes were made in Brum. Apparently he made so much money from his enterprise he was able to provide funds for a centre in his home country to treat sick children.

Yes I remember when Kunzle cakes were made here in Brum. They were a rare treat.

I as never very keen on Kunzle cakes, I preferred fondant fancies (still one of my favourites)
I an just eating a slice of lemon and poppy seed cake made from a Woman's Weekly recipe. I find it very addictive - something about the combination of crunchy poppy seeds with the sugary lemon juice.

My own lemon fairy cakes are my favourite (I say 'my own' but own up to being inspired by a supermarket version of them).

Shop bought cake would have to be a plain madeira cake.

NanKate - Oh yes the Kardomah. That brings back so many memories. Was it on Colmore Row on the corner of the Great Western Arcade, or have I got that wrong?
