I have never made this! Does anyone have a tried and tested way of making strawberry crumble?

I make it just the same as I make apple crumble. I cut the strawberries in half, add a bit of sugar, and the usual topping (self raising flour is good). And I microwave it. It's fine.

You can add a bit of cooking apple of course.

Or any sort of fruit. Even tinned if you want to.

I have just bought a cherry pitter. It is fantastic.

That is apropos of nothing at all.

I like to mix strawberries with drained, tinned rhubarb, then do the crumble topping as usual and cook in the oven for 30 minutes or so. I sometimes make a fruit pie with the same mixture of fruit.

Thanks Jingl and vega. I have made other crumbles in the past, but wondered if you needed any added fruit, or any added liquid to the strawberries. I will now have a go as we have lots of strawberries at the minute.I always cook in the oven , not sure I would dare microwave a crumble.

I am intrigued by crumble in the microwave! Is it possible?

I am going to try strawberry crumble tomorrow don't think I'll risk the microwave though.

Yep! It's fine. I often do it on a Sunday when the ovens are full. Just leave it in long enough for the crumble to go a bit crunchy.

crispy on top, moist inside Yum!

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 04-Jul-14 20:14:01

No added liquid with ripe strawberries.

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 04-Jul-14 20:16:25

here's one with your fruit mixture vegasmags

So it is. If I have some shortbread biscuits left over, I like to crush 2 or 3 and add to the crumble mixture.

Please stop. #soddingdiet

Strawberries and gooseberries are a good combination as well (recommended by my SIL).

Looking forward to a summer pudding as soon as the red currants are ready.

Made it today! Did Jingls recipe but put it in the oven for 25 mins [on hot] so simple and so delicious, especially with cream.Next time I may even mix in a bit of Summer fruits[you know, the kind you can buy frozen and thaw out a bit at a time?] and throw in a handful of that.

TriciaF Sun 06-Jul-14 17:33:04

Must try that with strawberries, plus apple maybe.
What do you put in the crumble?
Even easier - buy frozen raspberries, cook in microwave with some sugar, then layer with bought sponge fingers in a loaf tin lined with clingfilm. I had to freeze it for an hour or so as it was a bit sloppy. Turn upside down on a plate and slice. With cream.

Got rid of all my berry and currant bushes years ago. All that stripping and the dreaded topping and tailing. #waitrose

You can get ready made crumble topping. McDougall. It is delicious.

Nobody trusts my microwave method do they? It's great if you haven't got the oven on. Honest.

tanith Sun 06-Jul-14 17:58:41

Nooooooo!! Not bought crumble mix pleeeeeeese!!

jinglbellsfrocks Sun 06-Jul-14 18:06:35

I only make my own cos I like to stick a Olive fat. If not for that it would be Mr McDougalls every time. grin

TriciaF Sun 06-Jul-14 18:12:14

Good for you if you can get it Jingles - we're deprived here, only made from scratch.
But the french have taken over the word "crumble".

rosesarered Sun 06-Jul-14 20:10:13

It's so easy making crumble topping, I don't even measure ingredients.Just SR flour butter and dem. sugar.I make a very 'short' [ie buttery mix] and cook in quite a hot oven. Jingl I will try the microwave method another time just to see what it's like.

Purpledaffodil Sun 06-Jul-14 22:15:27

Best way rosesarered. I followed an apple crumble recipe the other week as an experiment and ended up with a thin mist of crumble sadDefinitely going to try jingle's microwave method too, but with usual guesswork crumble!

rosequartz Sun 06-Jul-14 22:48:21

The match went to 5 sets so just gooseberries (done in microwave) and bought fresh custard blush
