We were at a nice lunch earlier and one of the party was dunking bread in her soup, which she seemed to be enjoying. I possibly would do that at home but certainly not in a restaurant. Do you dunk in public?

No and yes.
No.
But there is a social setting where we have been meeting for years, and we all feel so comfortable with each other, that if the biscuits are eg Rich Tea, then 2 or 3 might. So yes, I have been known to.

Can I ask something. Shush!
Are gransnetters quite posh? smile

soontobe Tue 02-Dec-14 21:10:46

Generally? As a generalisation? In comparison to the UK as a whole?

ninathenana Tue 02-Dec-14 21:11:57

Only at home on both counts.

annodomini Tue 02-Dec-14 21:12:57

My granny was very much a 'lady' and as she dunked biscuits (especially gingernuts) in her tea, I feel free to do it too, though I don't like mushy biscuits at the bottom of the mug. As for soup, well, why not?

rosesarered Tue 02-Dec-14 21:17:48

Yes, I am extremely posh, and think that dunking bread in soup is a flogging offence, the woman should have been dragged out of the establishment by the head waiter.
Dunking in one's own mansion is another thing entirely darling, and I admit that I always dunk ginger biscuits in my cup of Earl Grey. It's a sad fact though, that half of the biscuit always vanishes to the bottom of the cup if the tea is too hot, and one gets it all over one's chin when reaching the last inch or so of tea.

rosesarered Tue 02-Dec-14 21:19:57

anno I found that you beat me to it with your post!Gingernuts in tea, always tricky.grin

Grannylin Tue 02-Dec-14 21:24:41

I would never dunk biscuits in tea but would always dunk bread in soup..and I would wipe my plate with bread...Don't know about posh but I like to enjoy my food and eat like the French!

Ana Tue 02-Dec-14 21:29:53

You are funny, soontobe! tchgrin

Nonu Tue 02-Dec-14 21:36:07

I also dunk bread in soup - the two go perfectly together. I've seen plenty of people doing it in fancy restaurants, too.

petallus Tue 02-Dec-14 21:39:36

I sunk my croissant into my latte but only in the Waitrose cafe.

petallus Tue 02-Dec-14 21:40:27

dunk not sunk. It has never done that because I keep a tight hold of one end.

MiceElf Tue 02-Dec-14 21:40:42

Of course I do. But I'm half French.

Nonu Tue 02-Dec-14 21:50:01

I always dunk my croissant into my coffee , is there any other way daaarlink ?

Grannylin Tue 02-Dec-14 21:50:06

petallus that sounds like it could be a line from Jarvis Cocker's 'Common People'!

rosesarered Tue 02-Dec-14 22:04:09

Of course if we all put our teeth in, there would be no reason for all this dunking.tchgrin

Slightly off piste - last year we were given as a gift tickets to a Fawlty Towers experience. I loved the shows but not the experience where you got a meal and actors playing tricks on the diners.

Anyway to cut a long story short I found a set of plastic false teeth in the bottom of my bowl of tomato soup. shock

The moral of the story never drink soup that has floating objects in it. grin
