To spiralize...or not?

Inspired by the glut of courgettes coming our way I am tempted to get a spiralizer. I've been on Amazon and they look like instruments of torture. So I'm turning to Gransnetters for help as I'm now confused. Any comments on using these, recommendations or otherwise? Not for torture obviously grin Are they fiddly to use with slightly arthritic fingers? What can I spiralize after the courgettes run out? Any recipes to share? All suggestions gratefully received, pardon the pun.

Of course I'm perfect and always wash up straight away, vacuum throughout before going to bed, get up at 5.00 am to put the washing in so I can hang it out at sunrise, iron socks and towels and bake all my own bread wink

yep Anya, im lazy, I just keep putting off doing dirty horrid jobs when it would be easier to do them first before I get fed up with them.

That's just laziness ethel

Looks like spaghetti when it comes out the other end though I think you can use different attachments for shredding etc...

I think mine is dishwasher friendly - hope so anyway as that's where it goes after use... dishwasher came with the house!

yes I agree, I hate cleaning kitchen stuff, I tend to put off till next day and then its hardened on and I have to scrape more so \I end up giving the gadget away and then years later I buy a new one and so on.

I am sure the effect is very attractive but I CBA to do that. Just scrape them with a good sharp peeler. The trouble with a lot of kitchen gadgets is that you spend more time cleaning them than using them.

And it's usually vegetable. (with no vitamins left)

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 04-Sept-15 20:46:30

not 'joinded'! joined

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 04-Sept-15 20:46:11

Yes. But the mince is joinded up.

What is a spiraliser, from the posts I gather they make spiral shapes out of veg but apart from that Ive never heard of them. Are they a bit like mincing machines

Anya Fri 04-Sept-15 10:55:24

I like that idea Lona think I'll give it a try.

The best thing I've discovered about spiralising is that it's a way of slicing onions without tears.
Spiral a couple of large onions, put them in bags in the freezer and when chopped onion is required, just break the frozen slices, in the bag, into small pieces. No tears, no oniony fingers! Also, broccoli stems spiral well and have lots of flavour.

Can you tell how pleased I am with mine? wink

You don't need a machine for delicious toasties. We use (or used to use before we went low carb) toastie bags. You just make the sandwich, put it in the bag - you can buy them in any major supermarket - then pop it in the toaster.

Very good for toasting those Warburton thins.

Easy peasy.

@Tegan - I would have expected a Mouli Juliennes to cut those very thin and whispy strips - Julienne strips in fact... I've done them ny hand with a cleaver, but it's fiddly and slow...

Please don't knock the Toastie machine, DGS and I love them, chicken bacon and tomato, gruyere with red onion, prawn pink mayo and spring onion. Lovely. On homemade 5 grain medium sliced bread. Yum

Thank you everyone for your contributions to this thread. They are much appreciated. I didn't realise that it would promote so much discussion grin

I've always liked a well-hyped item, and actually used them - take a bow, teasmade, sandwich toaster, yoghurt maker, bread maker, soup maker, hostess trolley. The one that only got one airing and ended up at the back of a cupboard was the pasta maker. Life's too short.

Apologies for nit picking!

Anya Wed 02-Sept-15 14:48:59

This really is a very silly discussion, but the pedant in me has to put the record straight grin

Emperor: the ruler of empire. Empire: a group of countries that are controlled by one ruler / government. King: the (male) ruler of an independent state / country that has a royal family. Kingdom: a country ruled by a king (or queen)

The accepted idea of Emperor's /King's new clothes is what could be described in todays parlance as pure hype. Ie, everyone says how fantastic it is when in fact ....there's nowt there! Ever heard of a julliene cutter , Anya?

Anya Wed 02-Sept-15 14:02:34

There's more than courgettes can be spiralised Babs - haven't you read other posts?

i think you'll find it was the Emporer's New Clothes AG and that they didn't actually exist. Are you saying spiralisers are a figment our our imagination? confused

absentgrandma Wed 02-Sept-15 13:44:45

Hmm... 25 quid+ to twiddle about with a courgette? Whatever floats your boat...but there's a distinct air of the King's New Clothes here I suspect. I guess spiralizers will be joining foot spas, toasted sandwich makers , electric waffle machines and espresso coffee makers in your neighbourhood car boot sale before too long.

I love my spiraliser. Mine is quite small though and doesn't take up a lot of room at all. I spiralise courgettes and then mix up a lemon, olive oil and black pepper dressing and mix it all together. I serve it with fish and is always a hit! Would like to know what people do with other veg though. Might be at a bit of a loss when the courgettes go out of season... grin
