The Mediterranean Diet

is being promoted yet again as best for our health and to keep our brains active into old age.

We are told that fresh fish, olive oil, fresh fruits and vegetables are all so good for us as part of the Mediterranean Diet, that is why peoples of the Mediterranean live such long and healthy lives.

So does this include the carbonara with cream, the Sicilian sausage, grilled cheese, pannacotta, panettone, tiramisu, gelato, baklava, tarte tatin, pots au chocolat etc?
They are all part of 'the Mediterranean diet' aren't they?
Is it OK to eat them as long as we eat our fish, olive oil and five a day first?

Yes.

Ana Fri 23-Oct-15 16:19:05

But not necessarily all of them, every day.

Mamie Fri 23-Oct-15 16:23:18

I agree. Which bit of the Mediterranean? You forgot churros and hot chocolate!

rosequartz Fri 23-Oct-15 16:27:28

I'm sure the list of the healthy Mediterranean diet is endless, yum, my mouth is watering .....

Bellanonna Fri 23-Oct-15 16:30:09

Of course it includes all of those fattening absolutely yummy things rose quartz

rosequartz Fri 23-Oct-15 16:35:59

It looks as if they are being economical with the truth. It is only part of the diet that we are supposed to eat well that's no good at all

M0nica Fri 23-Oct-15 16:41:34

Think of all that North African and Lebanese food, not to mention Jewish. They are all mediterranean food; paklava and all those sweets and patisseries oozing syrup and nuts.

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 23-Oct-15 16:42:25

No! Not churros! Horrible things. What's that other, much more delicious street food. Tudl? Something like that. Delicious. Not med though.

LullyDully Fri 23-Oct-15 17:19:12

Surly they eat chocolate in the Mediterranean.

merlotgran Fri 23-Oct-15 17:24:36

Can we have a mediterranean climate to go with it please?

Ana Fri 23-Oct-15 17:34:35

Yes, that probably contributes towards their longevity as well!

rosequartz Fri 23-Oct-15 18:17:37

I'm thinking of it MOnica grin

what are churros?
Oh, looked it up - a sort of choux pasty doughnut
Worth a try if I see any on my travels, especially with the chocolate sauce

It's probably the Vitamin D they get from the sunshine that makes them healthy. And a glug of red wine.

rosequartz Fri 23-Oct-15 18:18:06

pastry, not pasty hmm

Mamie Fri 23-Oct-15 18:31:45

Churros and hot chocolate are traditionally eaten at about 5am after a night out. It soaks up the alcohol apparently.
Revolting, I think.

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 23-Oct-15 18:33:43

You can eat churros in our local shopping mall now. grin hmm

rosequartz Fri 23-Oct-15 18:37:55

I'll stick to pannacotte or tiramisu or tarte tatin or .... then grin

M0nica Fri 23-Oct-15 19:44:06

That is a point. Both Spain and France have mediterranean coasts. Think of the Balearics and all that cheap booze!!

stillhere Fri 23-Oct-15 19:59:18

I love freshly-made churros. blush

Yes, the diet of those in the med has changed for the worse, much like ours. A friend who lives in Sicily says that the statistics for those with diabetes is horrific, because now everyone can afford to eat ice cream in a sort of halved doughnut sandwich every morning for a snack, bits of bbq'd pork fat on kebab sticks and various other fatty delicacies.

Iam64 Fri 23-Oct-15 20:01:09

It does get tedious doesn't it, all the advice about diet that seems to change as often as the weather. Don't eat more than an egg a week, eat flora not butter etc. Now sugar is the devil, worse than smoking some say. I love eating a med diet in Greece, it's so easy, endless and cheap supply of good quality and very tasty vegetables to make salads or main meals with Eat fish two or three days a week, meat one or two its so simple. Arrive home in last September and I don't know about everyone else, but I want cottage pie, fish n chips and other truly wicked foods.

stillhere Fri 23-Oct-15 20:12:35

I agree - I actually made myself chips the other night, I hadn't had any for months as I have been dieting. I hadn't even thought of them for all that time, but suddenly had a craving early this week. It wouldn't go away so I gave in.

Deedaa Fri 23-Oct-15 21:20:31

There is no cream in a proper Carbonara, Italian sausages and all meats are eaten in smaller quantities than in this country, Gelato is lower fat than British Ice Cream and fresh fruit is the most usual dessert - the others are for special occasions.

rosequartz Fri 23-Oct-15 21:27:04

Oh Deedaa sad now

I thought I'd found an excuse for tiramisu and pannacotta

nonnasusie Sat 24-Oct-15 10:07:53

Don't forget the Pizza. There's a pizzeria on every corner in and around here (Cassino)!! wine
