Things you loved as a child.

When I was wee, we always went to my granny Sarah's on a Friday, and had Heinz tomato soup with Marshall's macaroni. It's not the same nowadays.
We also got tinned hamburgers of an evening (mibbe Westlers or Co-op?) with processed peas and chips. Once again, it's not the same. Is it because the taste buds are dying?

My mum used to make fritters from a powdered fritter mix, little fried pancakey things - loved 'em grin

Treacle toffee and Parkin both home made on bonfire night, lancashire hotpot especially made for parish hotpot suppers with a pie crust on the top ( yes really) and a dash of red cabbage pickle, a tray of chips with curry sauce from the chippie on freezing cold, wet winter days and of course Flying Saucers slowly dissolving against the roof of your mouth.

Oh -just the cocoa powder mixed with sugar! A reasonable alternative to chocolate when times were hard.

My DH broke his two front teeth on my homemade Parkin one bonfire night. I told him not to eat it.

My mother used to make coconut ice, it was delicious, made more so by the fact that sweets were still on ration. I only have to see a piece of pink and white confectionary and I am transported back to 1950 and the lovely sweet smell coming from the kitchen smile

I used to eat sugar sandwiches, cornflake sandwiches and my mum used to fry bacon in lard, then empty baked beans into the pan and dish up with mashed potatoes smile I also loved, jublies, oxo flavoured crisps,
Camp coffee, Lucky Numbers chocolates, Spangles, kali (or however you spell it). We used to buy loose crisps from a tub, you had to try to be there when the seal was broken on the tub or you would get stale crisps!

My Uncle Jackie made Welsh Rarebit with semolina, beer, Lea and Perrins sauce, and grated cheese spread on bread which had been toasted on one side and grilled.

It was delicious.

Mum's home made rice pudding with the brown edges that we had to share. Bread pudding and custard, dripping on toast, Rossi's coffee ice cream, junket. Oh and when I was little, we were taken to London to have our photo taken and an aunt treated us to lunch. I saw Welsh Rarebit and thought it was rabbit, so asked for that and was so disappointed sad when I realised that it was posh cheese on toast, and I really didn't like cheese as a child. Love it now though grin.

Banana toffee split bars, Rosebud sweets, liquorice bootlaces....
Definitely wafer ice creams were the best, 'jubblies' funny triangular frozen full of god knows what! drinks, the red ones dyed your lips as you sucked it, leaving a plain ice block.
Penny worth of 'scrump' from the chip shop after Brownies.

Hi Falconbird funny you should talk about Welsh rearbit I've just had it for lunch with hubby I grate about 250g of cheddar two tsp of mustard I use French but what ever you prefer one egg sometimes I add chopped ham if I've got some give it a good mix spread on toasted bread and pop under the grill till golden.
Never heard of custard powder although I have heard of people adding beer,
Hope this helps. By the way I find the stronger the cheese the better it is.

I loved my mother's rabbit pie and I make it occasionally but daren't tell the Gdcs as they have pet rabbits.

Greyduster I'd forgotten about winkles picked out with a pin which we always had on trips to Whitley Bay. Dad used to have shrimps and they always took a crab home. If we were lucky we got to suck the claws.

I've never had any of them since!

margaretx with me it was rabbit stew, accompanied by Yorkshire pudding seasoned with sage and onion. Can't make it now has DH has a serial hatred of the idea of eating rabbit anything.

I must be fairly unusual because I really enjoyed school dinners - at least in most of the schools I attended. I even enjoyed salad (which was a fairly basic affair in those days), with cooked beetroot and buttered boiled potatoes. I loved the different flavoured custards and various sponges - it made a nice change from tinned fruit which we often had at home.

I also liked Instant Whip and Goblin meat pudding. Rossi's ice cream - especially during a day trip to Southend where it was scooped up from a metal bowl and had the most gorgeous texture.

Eloethan - I loved school dinners too though I only had them from 11years old and upward. It might be a reflection on my mother's cooking though, which was very basic and boring. Did anyone else search for the rare pieces of kidney in steak and kidney pies? It was held up in triumph when we found one!

Not only that but at home we only had pudding on Sunday! School puddings were a joy! I actually liked tapioca (frogspawn) and semolina into which we would stir the blob of jam which was on the top of it, resulting in pink semolina. I loved the sponges too especially syrup sponge.

Shrimps and cockles for tea on Saturdays. Soused herrings. Sweets once a week for a treat. Usually something with sherbert. Toast made on the fire with butter. Lovely! smile

I used to love eating 2 oz of Dolly Mixtures while reading the Beano or the Dandy or The School Friend comic.

Dad thought that the Beano and Dandy were not suitable for nice little girls
but I still bought them. I think they cost about twopence. Loved Key Hole Kate, a feisty little girl I seem to remember. The girls in School Friend were all quite posh but I liked them all especially the Silent Three.

On the very rare occasions my Dad cooked for us children we always had his signature dish - spam fritters , the spam was usually about an inch thick and the batter was thicker.

I had forgotten the iced gems. I used to love them and eat the icing first and then the biscuit. I liked the marshmallow tea cakes for the same reason and picked off the chocolate and ate it, then the marshmallow and then the biscuit. Chocolate bourbons and custard creams I ate the same way- top, filling and then bottom.
