I read in today's Telegraph that M & S are closing some of their smaller stores and regrading others to M & S Foods. Food seems to be the only thing they do well with now - well if they won't listen to their customers. I have just had an e-mail advert from them promoting the Alexa Archive Collection. Dire isn't the word for it. Alexa go back to the day job.

Yes, M&S do food well, but (with the odd exception like your top DB) generally not great in the clothes department. Having said that I've been looking for a tweed jacket that I can dress up or dress down with jeans. The one I liked in Joules was a tad expensive at about £250 but I've seen something that looks reasonable on the M&S website.

At least if it's not what it seems I can always send it back. They are very good about that at least.

I tried to PM this to you Daphne but nae luck. Might as well share the shame.

DaphneBroon Sun 06-Nov-16 21:04:07

No way Jane10 that is a statement jacket and I bet it looked amazing!!
A special occasion like a book launch deserves a special piece smile

Daphne love the M&S top! I have that East jacket. I bought it for my book launch and felt great in it until I saw the photos-I looked like I'd come out in my dressing gownblush

So glad everyone else feels the same about the latest Alexa Chung fiasco. Who do they think their customers are? Find me a
woman over 21 who wants to troll round in a bin bag and a pair of army boots and that might be their target.

The article I read about them closing stores mentioned outlets as well. Be warned if you shop in one at the moment. Although I have it on good authority that things are not as good as they might be for Waitrose and John Lewis.

lIke the East one DaphneBroom - v hippy chic
Our M and S is one of the small ones that might be for the chop. It is 2/3 food but not sure that this town is affluent enough to make it profitable enough to keep open. You have to be spending a serious amount on food to do all your shopping there. The offers on fruit and veg there are more expensive than the normal prices elsewhere. Pity for the staff if it closes.
Noticed in a big store I visited recently that there were a few stylish items. But they have such acres of boring.

Barmyoldbat Sun 06-Nov-16 20:31:51

DapheBroom, love the jacket, will have a look for myself. I do buy some things from m&s that I have been happy with but not that many. Use to always buy swimwear from them but couldn't find Any colour I liked this year. I like East, and I tend to buy my tops and cardigans from Fat Face.

Tegan Sun 06-Nov-16 20:24:33

...I buy a lot of tops from Apricot these days; a bit cheap and cheerful but they last the season. I do like grey, with grey and a bit more grey, though.

We live on M&S food when we go away as I get tired of cooking oop north, so we stock up when they have a meal deal. Their curries are very tasty. I still buy a lot of clothes from M&S but had to change a top the other week; I'd swapped one that I'd bought for one in a different colour. It was a size 12 but when I tried it on at home it was no larger than a size 8!The M&S in Nottingham is terribly understaffed and the staff are very demoralised because of it [we've had conversations with them about it]. It's probably the same in other stores. They also don't treat the staff very well at a local distribution centre; you'd think M&S would be good to work for confused.I must say though, that the staff at the little M&S food outlet place at Berwick has some of the nicest, friendliest staff you'd ever deal with.

Nanevon Sun 06-Nov-16 19:48:41

Love both those garments DaphneBroon. Must have a trip to M&S to see if they have either in my size. Haven't been in their store for a long time, as like others I have never found anything I liked. Do like their food hall.

Jalima Sun 06-Nov-16 19:44:37

I have seen my neighbour wearing something similar to your £39.50 top, DaphneBroon and it looks very nice.

She's 39 btw smile

I like it, but can't copy both of you!

DaphneBroon Sun 06-Nov-16 19:27:54

PS you never came back to me with an opinion on the EAST javketI thought you might like? Did you have a look?

DaphneBroon Sun 06-Nov-16 19:26:29

Not a very tactful flattering observation M0nica especially as you can give me a year or two (or 5) gringrin
Can't speak for grannypiper, tiggypro's DD or GrammaH of course

luluaugust Sun 06-Nov-16 18:29:11

I went to M&S yesterday wearing a pair of their trousers in a size I have worn for some years now, tried on the same size and none of this year's fitted, either to tight round waist or miles to long, or to short what is going on. I am buying more on line now. Our local M&S closed last year so have to travel, not sure I am going to bother.

goldengirl Sun 06-Nov-16 18:24:38

'Fraid I've given up on M & S too - even for food; prefer Waitrose if I'm out on the road. I tend to buy clothes on line now - I have my favourites and it's easy to return them if unsuitable. I feel sad for M &S they've got stuck somewhere along the line.

tiggypiro Sun 06-Nov-16 18:23:19

Oh blimey Jalima ! Are they coming out of Beijing ? They have only been there 11 months and DD would be devastated if they shut. After saying that she does not do a great deal for their profits as she only buys what is on offer or reduced.
There used to be an M&S Simply Food in a good place in our High Street but it has now moved away from the rest of the shops into a new building. The car park only has about 30 places and there is a complicated paying system for it (refundable in the shop). The new cafe is very small too. I doubt very much that I will be popping in as much as I used to as I will no longer be passing it and any shopping will have to be carried.

grannypiper Sun 06-Nov-16 16:59:30

I love Markies, buy 90% of our clothes from there, in fact i have 2 pairs of trousers from there that i bought 15 years ago for work, i wore them every day for 9 years and now wear them at least once a week and they still look like new.

granfromafar Sun 06-Nov-16 16:59:23

Have never bought that much from them as have always found them to be overpriced for my budget. Last time OH needed a light-weight smart/casual jacket, he found just the thing in M&S. Disappointingly, after a few months wear through the summer, have found that the colour has faded in odd places, but feel it's too long after purchase to return. Recently discovered an outlet about 20 miles away and was pleased to pick up some bargains at great prices, including jeans for me that actually fit, and childrens' pyjamas.

M0nica Sun 06-Nov-16 16:39:16

As long as I have been looking in M&S I have always felt the clothes were aimed at women 20 years older than me. I am now 73.........

roset Sun 06-Nov-16 16:30:18

l also think the clothes are dire. l take my mother for coffee and cake in the café, cakes are delicious. The café is always very busy in Longbridge but there is never enough staff serving.
Whilst l'm there l always have a look around but every time l am disappointed in the clothes.
Coffee, cake, knickers and occasional footwear is my lot.

crazygranmda Sun 06-Nov-16 16:17:54

Nearly every time I visit M&S, I come away disappointed because of the usual lack of clothes in my size. Come the sales there will be racks and racks of size 8s and 10s. I am a size 14, with size 7 shoes. I'm told that's average and that's why they sell out quickly. Does that not indicate that they have got their buying wrong? So now I order on line, making sure I spend enough to get free delivery and then return everything other than the things I wanted! If they sorted out the availability of size range I'd be able to buy in store. I have mentioned this on numerous occasions but the stock answer is you can order it. As many of you have said they just don't listen to their customers.

Funnygran Sun 06-Nov-16 15:45:42

There is one staff member in our M&S who I avoid as she is so off hand. I once asked her to check if an item was in stock and after consulting the computer she told me it was in another store. Asked if it could be ordered - John Lewis do this, and she snapped at me to go home and order it online ?
I have just bought Footglove ankle boots and they are so comfortable I think I'll be wearing them all winter.

DaphneBroon Sun 06-Nov-16 15:41:29

It also comes in light grey, beige, mid grey and tan and before you ask, yes I did blush

Beammeupscottie Sun 06-Nov-16 15:27:01

That's very good value; looks more expensive which goes to show M&S can get it right. I think they need to stop trying to be all things to all people and concentrate on nice modern clothes. To-day's seventy year old grew up with Mary Quant et al..

DaphneBroon Sun 06-Nov-16 15:23:50

And I will probably wear it 24/7 so cost per wear will be minimal gringrin
