No sprouts!

Just been to get veg for Sunday evening family meal. There were no Brussels sprouts in the veggie dept, so I enquired where they were.
"Oh there's a shortage of sprouts, and they're likely to be scarce until
after Christmas". chirped the adolescent department manager.
Am I alone in cynically wondering if this is a planned shortage to make sure that we all pay inflated prices for the green horror-balls?
I loathe sprouts, so I shan't be inconvenienced, but the rest of the family will want them at any price.
I suppose we must just blame it all on Brexit - or maybe Donald Trump has bought up the entire output of Brussels sprouts as part of his plan for world domination!

I bought a stick of purple sprouts in Lidl last week; they are tasty and sweet. DH doesn't like sprouts but he loved those!

I adore Brussel sprouts, but even better are Brussel Tops ( oh yum ).
Only one greengrocer sold them in our Town but sadly they shut down a couple of years ago and I cannot find anywhere else that sells them ?.

DFH won't put potatoes or potato peelings in the compost because they sprout and then grow all over the garden.

I am worried now, may look for some sprouts and blanch and freeze them, can't have Christmas dinner without sprouts.

OH was proud of his allotment and his ability o grow things.

We have had carrot fly carrots. Sprouts with white fly and mange.

Oh only ate them.

Mountains of tatties. for him to eat, but they soon sprout and go in the compost.

Happy days

Read somewhere that the UK is experiencing a blight of some kind of moth that eats sprouts (good, lets have some here !)

I am (as you may tell ) not keen on them, but I eat them as they are good for you ...and they are a lovely green to go with dinner on the plate ! I buy fresh ones from the market, blanch them and open freeze them ...sadly now in a supermarket they mostly come in 5kg bags ! but I also read the supermarkets are proposing a ban on loose veggies because of people picking them up and sorting them overm thus damaging them so they have to be thrown away ! Why can they not be sold cheaply or given away to those without the means to buy fresh food ?

I do recall years ago my dad decided to grow his own and we opened the door one day to find thousands of caterpillars hadformed an orderly line from the sprouts and up the back door ! Didn't happen again !

Kent is the brassica capital of the country - caulis, cabbages of all sorts and sprouts. There has been a moth whose caterpillars have been attacking the sprouts in particular this year due to the mild weather - yes, it has been very mild this winter, about one frost to date, then the temperatures soaring into double figures. That is why there is a shortage of sprouts.
I prefer sprout tops personally, and the farmers' markets always sell them - delicious.

Be thankful, be VERY thankful if you cannot get your hands on the tiny green stinkbombs! The biological fall-out from these oddities of the veg world is just not worth it.

AND either they are cooked to a wallpaper-paste mush or not cooked nearly enough and are still semi-raw. Furthermore, I often find they have an almost acrid aftertaste. It must be either the particular variety (are there named varieties of sprouts?) or just me......

I's sooner substitute chestnut mushrooms any day!

Love sprouts and eat them all year round. Mum even swears by sprout sandwiches with leftovers! She said "don't knock it until you've tried it!"

Charleygirl Mon 12-Dec-16 12:06:14

If I never saw a sprout again it would be too soon.

gillybob Mon 12-Dec-16 11:57:00

My DGC call them little green farts pumps.

gulligranny Mon 12-Dec-16 11:50:11

DH and I both love sprouts, steamed then tossed in melted butter and grated nutmeg. Really liking the idea of roasted frozen ones, definitely going to give that a try.

We are going to DH's daughter (can I call her DS-D? She is!) for Christmas Day and I doubt we'll have sprouts as her husband hates them. He and DGDs (9 and 6) are going to do the cooking. We are living in hope but will be keeping the indigestion tablets handy.

I'm with Hilltopgran, I absolutely adore red cabbage but I'm the only one, so I make a batch and freeze it in single portions to enjoy as and when.

annifrance Mon 12-Dec-16 11:09:02

Ddil calls them devil's testocles and D's makes here eat three before she can have anything else - the sadist!
We have tried growing them but they never get bigger than a pea. Can't say I'm heartbroken.

Hilltopgran Mon 12-Dec-16 11:07:08

Still have sprouts in our garden and they have done better this year than ever before, straight from the garden they only need about 3 mins to cook and are sweet and crisp. My favorite with Xmas lunch is red cabbage, cooked with cinemmon and red currant jelly.

gillybob Mon 12-Dec-16 11:06:42

The ones I buy are small Jalima but a dozen in one go might be pushing it. grin Mind you my DGC would easily eat a dozen and still ask if there were any left!

Slight change of subject..... well not sprouts anyway. I bought some multicoloured carrots at the weekend (orange, purple and yellow) and can't wait to give them to DGC for dinner tonight. We always have a Sunday-Monday dinner and I look forward to their reaction, although I hope they don't like them too much. They were a bit pricey and I happened to get them cheap.

Barmyoldbat Mon 12-Dec-16 10:15:32

I cook mine so they have a crunch and then sprinkly parmesan cheese on them. Lovely but won't be having any out here this year, though we are going to have a Christmas dinner at a the local eating place and it has been said that we may even ge having a christmas pud.

Lupatria Mon 12-Dec-16 10:12:34

frozen veg for our family - including sprouts. grandaughter 2 loves them and would eat all of them if she could! however the rest of us content ourselves with three or four [small ones].
enough time is spent on cooking on christmas day so we feel justified in eating frozen veggies - tend not to make bubble and squeak anyway!

Jalima Mon 12-Dec-16 10:07:15

I hadn't even started on the wine, I was just explaining something and 'talking with my hands'. tchgrin

radicalnan Mon 12-Dec-16 10:01:11

Sprouts ! 'Are they made of ear wax' asked my nephews underwhelmed by my cooking.

rosesarered Mon 12-Dec-16 09:58:12

Jalima you must take more water with it in future.tchgrin

Jalima Mon 12-Dec-16 09:57:25

I have not been back there since

rosesarered Mon 12-Dec-16 09:57:09

A friend of ours make sprout soup and says it is delicious.I haven't tried it, or tried frozen sprouts either.

Jalima Mon 12-Dec-16 09:56:51

Can't remember if that was before or after the glass of red wine got knocked over into the dish of carrots hmm

rosesarered Mon 12-Dec-16 09:55:31

Haha!

Jalima Mon 12-Dec-16 09:53:00

I was wondering what dozen sprouts were! So small that you could fit 12 in your mouth at once?

I like them just done, not crunchy and definitely not mushy. When I was out for a meal last Christmas at a rather posh hotel they served broccoli which was definitely still crunchy, I put my fork on it to try to cut it, the broccoli resisted and shot off my plate across the table complete with its accompaniment of gravy blush

Greyduster Mon 12-Dec-16 08:20:12

I had shunned frozen sprouts until my friend served them at lunch one day and I thought they were rather nice. They weren't mushy. She cooked them in the microwave. I thought I might get some because I like sprouts and DH hates them.
