I want my dinner on a plate.

The ways of serving dinner are becoming more and more ridiculous. Chips in wee wire baskets or cardboard " newspaper", meals on slates or pieces of wood, first courses on wee spoons,or even ( the last straw for me) a starter of sausage &mash served in a wine glass.
Is it just me who wants my meal on a plate?

I agree! Wholeheartedly. Sausage and mash in a wine glass? How silly. I now ask for a plate if I notice other diners eating off ornaments or if it's too late, send the meal back and ask for them to re-serve it on a plate or, when recently my drink was served in a jam jar with a handle, a proper glass. I'm revolting! (and embarrassing my DH again!)

I don't mind chips in a wire basket or slates and wood but would draw the line at sausage & mash in a wine glass grin

Name and shame Daddima!

No, it isn't !
I'm with you on this. We took GS to pizza hut at the weekend (bad nannie) the youngest wanted nuggets and chips from the children's menu the chips were served in a miniture metal bucket confused

On Come Dine With Me recently I saw one contestant pouring soup from a teapot into little teacups.

I have the occasional snack in my local Waitrose and nearly all food is served in a deep soup plate which I hate. I much prefer food served a normal dinner plate but no joy, they will not change it.

It's nothing new though. Who remembers 'Chicken in a Basket' from the 60s or 70s?

I'm wondering how slate and wooden platters are cleaned. Do they go in the dishwasher? I wouldn't think they'd last long with that treatment.

rosesarered Wed 18-Jan-17 13:31:56

...and scampi in a basket, very sophisticated!
I would draw the line at fish and chips in a flat cap.grin

Riverwalk, it's a very good tapas place called Rioja in Glasgow.

chelseababy Wed 18-Jan-17 13:41:37

I had a G&T served in a half pint glass with handle! It just didn't taste the same! ?

Greyduster Wed 18-Jan-17 13:52:56

Whippet and chips in a flat cap, maybe, roses! (Apologies to any whippet owners!!). I don't mind my chips being served in little wire frying baskets - it's quite fun - but I do object to food on slabs of slate, or deep soup plates, which are okay for pasta but totally alien for anything else.

felice Wed 18-Jan-17 13:53:44

I think they are awful, and not easy for the waiters either, especially the wooden boards and slates.
I also wonder how they clean them properly.
SO and I were going for lunch one day when we saw the serving 'plates', floor tiles¨hmm !!!!!!!! we went elsewhere.

Kittye Wed 18-Jan-17 14:15:40

felice I always wonder if slate or wooden platters are clean. As for floor tiles I too would eat elsewhere.
I also hate my "small glass of wine" being served in massive wine glasses that cover half my face. ?

henetha Wed 18-Jan-17 14:18:14

I remember Chicken in a Basket, Anya, and loved it.

Bellanonna Wed 18-Jan-17 14:22:05

Roses, you made me laugh out loud? Doesn't often happen on here
Greyduster nicked the whippet quip from me☹️

Bellanonna Wed 18-Jan-17 14:22:51

Roses, I mean on here in general, not you in particular.

janeainsworth Wed 18-Jan-17 14:28:44

Oh dear! If you want your dinner on a plate why don't you just stay at home and make it yourself <sigh>

Riverwalk Wed 18-Jan-17 14:57:53

I'm not too fussed as long as the food is good. grin

Jane I'm sure you've had clam chowder in a sourdough bread bowl

Yum, yum, yummity yum .... eat the luscious chunky soup, then eat the bowl!

bread bowl

Basket meals were a big thing in the 1970s - scampi/chicken and chips in the basket

Also I think that some restaurants are using international traditions - especially old Scandi traditions - I remember DH's Swedish great aunt always used to serve breakfast toast/bread on little wooden boards with wooden butter knives

However I think that sausage and mash in a wine glass sounds very odd - but there again I think that sausage and mash as a starter sounds really odd

Greyduster Wed 18-Jan-17 15:11:00

I remember going to a 'medieval' (spelling) banquet once and having some sort of meat stew served in a bread bowl like that, though not as deep. The stew was good but I somehow couldn't bring myself to eat the bowl!

janeainsworth Wed 18-Jan-17 15:50:53

Yes indeed river and a basket made of noodles with stir fried vegetables and prawns inside smile

gillybob Wed 18-Jan-17 16:02:00

It's those ridiculous slabs of slate that annoy me Daddima the gravy, sauce or jus (or whatever they call the stuff these days) just runs off. I hate eating off pieces of wood too. Maybe some restaurants think it's fancy but maybe it's just to distract you from the crap food they are serving.

I don't mind home made chips in little baskets though. In fact in don't mind home made chips anyway they are served.
