Pancake sacrilege!

Evening all, hope everyone is well.

With Shrove Tuesday nearly upon us, my thoughts turn to........pancakes!

A visit to the supermarket showed various items being promoted as being "perfect for pancakes". These included squeezy golden syrup and various types of chocolate spread.

Yesterday's Daily Telegraph included such suggestions as parmesan and spinach or rhubarb and blood Orange.shock

stop it RIGHT now!

Pancakes should be served with lemon juice and sugar, and preferably made by someone who can make them faster than I can eat them. grin

Lemon and sugar all the way for me, but when my DD was little she loved pancakes so much she had them as a first course with chicken, broccoli and mushrooms, followed by lemon and sugared ones for pudding!

goose1964 Mon 27-Feb-17 10:13:24

the only way I could eat them was drowned in golden syrup (from a tin) I have diabetes now so can't eat them anyway

No it's got to be maple syrup for me, my Mum used to put currants in with the batter yuck!

NanKate Mon 27-Feb-17 08:25:32

I'm a traditionalist so sugar and lemon for me too.

I remember one Shrove Tuesday in the 1950's my dear old Mum had made her usual delicious pancakes which we scoffed down. There was some batter left over at the end and she made one last pancake that came out thick and inedible, always one for a bit of fun she let my sister and I bat it up and down the hallway, tennis style, to squeals of laughter. Happy days. grin

A little drizzle of Golden Syrup and a blob of (good quality) dairy ice cream on the side. Food heaven for me.

I too like lemon and sugar on pancakes. I recall strawberry jam being quite nice too, though I haven't had this since I was a child.

Dare I say... I do not like pancakes no matter what they are disguised with smile

SueDonim Sun 26-Feb-17 23:14:35

Sugar & lemon for me, with a token one with golden syrup on. They must be thin crepes, too. No drop scones or scotch pancakes are permitted on Shrove Tuesday.

Dh is the pancake maker in this house. He has a new crepe pan he's itching to put to work so he'll be busy making two pancakes at a time on Tuesday. grin

Jalima Sun 26-Feb-17 23:11:24

Lemon and sugar for me
but DH likes marmalade (he is a bit strange grin)

Moocow Sun 26-Feb-17 22:53:25

Oh no hilltopgran I've been revisiting my MMB cookbooks and now have several pages marked!

Sugar and lemon juice for ours - the only way to enjoy this once a year treat.

Chewbacca Sun 26-Feb-17 22:45:32

You can still have them Galen, it simply means you won't have to share them! Winner!

Galen Sun 26-Feb-17 22:29:51

Sacrilege! Lemon juice and. Caster sugar
I won't be having them as I'm on my own!?

Greyduster Sun 26-Feb-17 22:06:11

It has always been golden syrup and lemon juice for me; caster sugar and orange juice for DH, as per family tradition. I will make pancakes for GS's breakfast tommorrow but he will have blueberries and maple syrup on his.

hildajenniJ Sun 26-Feb-17 20:57:20

I'm a simple woman with simple tastes. Pancakes need just a sprinkling of sugar and nothing else.
My late mother in law made the best drop scones ever. She made them on the Aga, directly on the hotplate over the oven with the lid left up until it was just the right temperature. I don't make a bad one myself by the way.

Norah Sun 26-Feb-17 20:56:48

We pour over melted butter and berry syrup still hot from cooking.

Someday GC tastes will become less pedestrian. grin

paddyann Sun 26-Feb-17 20:50:29

its scotch pancakes her ,or drop scones as some call them ,no lemon and sugar its not traditional its butter or jam or honey or golden syrup .I made 3 dozen this morning with two of my grandaughter ,who stood beside me and ate them hot off the girdle panl

Glad to see that there are many votes for "proper" ones! wink

Deedaa Sun 26-Feb-17 20:40:35

I have argued with DH for over 40 years about this. He will insist on having jam on his pancakes while I demand lemon and sugar!

Kittye Sun 26-Feb-17 20:37:45

Sugar and lemon juice....job done!

BBbevan Sun 26-Feb-17 20:14:27

We shall have ordinary pancakes with lemon and sugar for DH and SiL. DD and me will have almond flour pancakes with blueberries and perhaps a spot of honey

Rinouchka Sun 26-Feb-17 20:02:29

I plan to make and serve both savoury pancakes( gallettes) and sweet ones( crepes) on Tuesday.
Helpings only of one savoury galette( as it is quite heavy)per person but my oh my do we plan to eat a lot of sweet ones
Bon appétit!

( I develop the rosiest of cheeks when am making the pancakes, so calorific, but very good for the complexion!)

phoenix Sun 26-Feb-17 20:00:02

Now don't get me wrong, I do not intend to be the pancake Gestapo, indeed I will freely admit to making a chilli con carne pancake stack recipe for a (then) teenage son and his mates (Readers Digest book of creative cooking and entertaining) but Shrove Tuesday pancakes should not be messed about with!

whitewave Sun 26-Feb-17 19:26:21

We used to have a pancake shop in Brighton. Yum yum yum yum

That is if that restaurant is still there. I have just realised that it is over 20 years since I visited Bruges. My, how time flies when you're enjoying yourself!

absent Sun 26-Feb-17 19:23:09

phoenix I think you should treat yourself to a holiday in Bruges and visit the restaurant that serves only pancakes. I can't remember its name but it's bound to be listed in any tourist guide. The selection is immense and the dishes are irresistible, whether savoury or sweet. P.s. The museums there and the barge tour are worthwhile too.
