Pancake sacrilege!

Evening all, hope everyone is well.

With Shrove Tuesday nearly upon us, my thoughts turn to........pancakes!

A visit to the supermarket showed various items being promoted as being "perfect for pancakes". These included squeezy golden syrup and various types of chocolate spread.

Yesterday's Daily Telegraph included such suggestions as parmesan and spinach or rhubarb and blood Orange.shock

stop it RIGHT now!

Pancakes should be served with lemon juice and sugar, and preferably made by someone who can make them faster than I can eat them. grin

I couldn't agree more, phoenix. How anyone can ruin such a delightfully simple treat is beyond me.

They're going to have to be gluten free this year though.

Nelliemoser Sun 26-Feb-17 17:27:54

I prefer lemon and sugar as well. There are people out there desperately tryiing to make us fat(er).

phoenix Sun 26-Feb-17 17:31:44

Hope you enjoy them anyway merlot, and very pleased to hear that you too know the "proper" way to have them!

Golden syrup all the way for me, I make pancakes regularly as we love them(DH is a lemon and sugar man.)

Luckygirl Sun 26-Feb-17 17:34:24

Definitely lemon and brown crunchy sugar.

NonnaW Sun 26-Feb-17 17:38:04

We are planning to make traditional pancakes for DGS on Tuesday as it's our day with him, but DH purchased a new pancake pan and to try it out we had savoury (tomato & mushroom) pancakes for lunch yesterday, and they were lovely smile.

roses that is like theft from multi storey car parks, wrong on so many levels! grin

rosesarered Sun 26-Feb-17 17:42:21

Haha! grin so yummy though.

rosesarered Sun 26-Feb-17 17:43:33

I make them with Dove gluten free flour Merlot and they are lovely.

Esspee Sun 26-Feb-17 17:43:34

Tesco has a recipe for gluten free pancakes online and available as recipe cards in store. Tastes wonderful.

Badenkate Sun 26-Feb-17 17:55:19

Can't have them ?, but if I could (maybe next year) then I'm afraid dripping with golden syrup or smothered with Nutella is exactly how I would eat them. (Which probably explains why I'm not eating them this year!)

MawBroon Sun 26-Feb-17 17:59:45

Not sacrilege at all.
One of my favourite restaurants years ago used to be "Astérix" in the Kings Road which served traditional Norman or Breton pancakes/galettes made with white flour or buckwheat flour and every possible filling you could think of plus some you couldn't smile ???

trisher Sun 26-Feb-17 18:05:01

Spinach and ricotta filling with a tomato sauce and parmesan grated on top. Lemon and sugar is OK too.

M0nica Sun 26-Feb-17 18:42:53

Golden syrup and butter.

Hilltopgran Sun 26-Feb-17 18:50:14

My very old well thumbed Milk Marketing Cookbook from the 60/70s has some lovely savory pancake receipes, which I have used over many years. A filled pancake makes a very easy and satisfying meal. But on Tuesday my wheat free pancakes will be made with white Rye flour and definately fresh lemon to squeeze over them!

Yum yum yum yum yum yum yum

phoenix I think you should treat yourself to a holiday in Bruges and visit the restaurant that serves only pancakes. I can't remember its name but it's bound to be listed in any tourist guide. The selection is immense and the dishes are irresistible, whether savoury or sweet. P.s. The museums there and the barge tour are worthwhile too.

absent Sun 26-Feb-17 19:24:33

That is if that restaurant is still there. I have just realised that it is over 20 years since I visited Bruges. My, how time flies when you're enjoying yourself!

whitewave Sun 26-Feb-17 19:26:21

We used to have a pancake shop in Brighton. Yum yum yum yum

phoenix Sun 26-Feb-17 20:00:02

Now don't get me wrong, I do not intend to be the pancake Gestapo, indeed I will freely admit to making a chilli con carne pancake stack recipe for a (then) teenage son and his mates (Readers Digest book of creative cooking and entertaining) but Shrove Tuesday pancakes should not be messed about with!

Rinouchka Sun 26-Feb-17 20:02:29

I plan to make and serve both savoury pancakes( gallettes) and sweet ones( crepes) on Tuesday.
Helpings only of one savoury galette( as it is quite heavy)per person but my oh my do we plan to eat a lot of sweet ones
Bon appétit!

( I develop the rosiest of cheeks when am making the pancakes, so calorific, but very good for the complexion!)

BBbevan Sun 26-Feb-17 20:14:27

We shall have ordinary pancakes with lemon and sugar for DH and SiL. DD and me will have almond flour pancakes with blueberries and perhaps a spot of honey

Kittye Sun 26-Feb-17 20:37:45

Sugar and lemon juice....job done!

Deedaa Sun 26-Feb-17 20:40:35

I have argued with DH for over 40 years about this. He will insist on having jam on his pancakes while I demand lemon and sugar!
