Tesco turkeys

Has anyone seen the news today about Tesco and their turkeys? Evidently a lot of people discovered they were completely off, either before or after cooking, and a refund after Christmas is not exactly helpful if you have had a ruined Christmas lunch and wasted a lot of money.
I am commenting upon this only because it is not a first for Tesco; a few years back I had a turkey crown from them and luckily decided to cook it on Christmas Eve. When I took off the wrapping the disgusting aroma almost made me heave. DH took it back as the shop was still open, and came home to tell me that he had been in a queue of people all returning the same thing! We wondered how many others would not have found this out until Christmas Day when it would have been too late. I am beginning to think the motto should not be 'Every little helps' but 'If we can get away with it we will'.

What's a turkey crown - just the breast?

ninathenana Wed 27-Dec-17 14:31:17

Just heard this on the car radio.

Rosina Wed 27-Dec-17 14:53:02

Yes, Fennel, it's the turkey breast, without any bones. Ideal for the fussy eaters in my family!

Someone on a weightwatchers Facebook group I follow said she had gorged on pigs in blankets because their tesco turkey was off.

How disappointing!
I was delighted with the Morrison turkey crown cooked using Phil Vickery's method.
We all voted it best ever!

I haven't liked turkey ever since we had one a few years ago from Sainsbury's that tasted of fish. Someone at the time told me that turkeys were sometimes fed on fish meal.

We were at DS's for Christmas and had a wonderful piece of rolled sirloin. Much prefer that to turkey!

Yes it's rife. In our large Tesco up the motorway. The queue was out the door with Turkey holding furious people .

There were no turkeys available to pre-order for my online Tesco delivery so I went to Sainsburys and got mine. When I did my order I was annoyed Tesco had turkeys and other things unavailable. Now it seems I was lucky.

Ours was lovely. From Aldi .

It's funny but on one of our early Christmases, so me being desperate to make it spectacular, DOH bought a turkey from the Christmas turkey auction .... anyone who lived in the country especially Norfolk, would remember those.... It had been plucked (and I think drawn) but still with head etc. DOH hung it in the garage for about 5 days (too long ago for me to actually recall) but it was one of those mild Christmases and when he brought it in for me to prepare for the oven on Christmas Eve it stank.
I kid you not, I actually spent a sleepless night worrying about the darned thing...... said nothing to anyone else of course. Cooked it, still worrying, only for everyone to say it was without doubt the most tasty, succulent bird they had eaten for years! I confessed DOH later, and we often recalled it whenever faced with other Christmas dinner hiccups... like the time I didn't realise our new oven was to small for the flippin' thing. Had to cook it with the a chair against the oven door in an attempt to keep it closedtchsad

Oh dear; I bought a Tesco turkey crown as a 'just in case' and froze it. We haven't used it yet so perhaps I ought to take it out of the freezer, defrost and sniff.
Would they believe me if I tell them it has been frozen I wonder?

We've never bought one before either.

NannyTee Wed 27-Dec-17 18:33:12

Yes Jalimal they will believe you . Try it out and hope for the best eeek!

Jalima1108 Wed 27-Dec-17 19:30:33

I was going to use it tomorrow but decided to cook something else instead (before reading this thread btw).

It doesn't say it can be frozen on the packet
tchhmm

NannyTee Wed 27-Dec-17 19:37:44

I know but you can freeze any meat once.

NannyTee Wed 27-Dec-17 19:38:20

As long as it doesn't say not to .

When I opened my Asda turkey on Christmas eve, after they had closed, I was unsure about the smell. However, after a while exposed to the air it seemed ok. I had nightmares overnight but decided to use my meat thermometer to make sure it cooked to over the recommended 74 degrees. It was very succulent and nobody was ill. Phew!

Chewbacca Wed 27-Dec-17 19:41:04

Thank heavens I got mine from Aldi. Not shopped in Tesco for years.

NannyTee Wed 27-Dec-17 19:42:10

I know what you mean about that smell , however the Tesco ones were rancid apparently. There was no getting away from it .

Jalima1108 Wed 27-Dec-17 19:43:31

Sometimes meat does smell a bit odd when taken out of the packaging.
If it does, I do what you're not supposed to - wash it under a cold running tap. The slightly off smell goes then. If not - take it back!

We had a turkey crown from Tesco and it was very disappointing, dry with a strange texture and little taste.
For the first time ever, I went to our local store this afternoon and told the Customer Service staff. They have given me a phone number to ring.
Went to DD1 on Boxing day and her Aldi turkey breast that we ate cold, was so much better.

Jalima1108 Wed 27-Dec-17 20:38:09

oh dear!
Well at least I'm not cooking it tomorrow when we have guests.

Jalima1108 Wed 27-Dec-17 20:38:29

and I'll try the Phil Vickery method.

10 million turkeys killed for Christmas. How sad that some of them died and weren’t even eaten. Imagine the outcry if 10 million dogs were being killed in a matter of a few weeks. I guess turkeys just aren’t cute.

glammanana Wed 27-Dec-17 21:16:17

Aldi turkey crown for us and it was excellent the best we have had in a long time, some reports said the Tesco turkeys smelt of bleach when opened I have read that washing in a bleach solution prior to packing will hide any smell once the packaging is opened, they must have been very off when packaged for the smell to be so bad.Disgraceful Tesco.
I never shop there as the veg etc are always well past their best I have thrown fresher produce in the waste bin.
