Your “go to” comfort food?

I am a keen cook, have even done it professionally, but when I feel poorly (like today) my “go to” is warm toast with peanut butter.
Or tinned tomato soup (Heinz de préférence)
If I have the energy, (which I don’t) my final favourite is thick sliced ham, fried egg and (oven) chips.

MOnica, I buy Waitrose steak and kidney puds. Only place I can find them. I so love eating them. Then the suet sets in my stomach and have a food baby for the rest of the night. Doesn’t put me off though! They remind me of childhood and my dear mum.

Grandma70s You could try frozen mash if in need of emergency comfort food. It's £1 for a bag at Tesco and is what I use when I have a gastritis flare up. Delia Smith did a cookery book using convenience foods and recommended frozen mash! I make a bit of gravy granules gravy to go with mine. It's very soothing.

Toast and marmite here as well but when I was a child I would recover from car sickness with a mug of Oxo and a chunk of dry crusty bread.

Marmite on toast
Eggs on toast
A lovely cup of tea to complete the picture.

I’m another one for Heinz tomato soup and boiled or scrambled eggs. Mashed potato would be good as well, but if I were feeling really in need of comfort I wouldn’t want the effort of making it.

My mother's homemade Scotch broth (Strained through a sieve) and crusty bread.

Having read all posts so far, I realise that chopped up eggs in a cup, Farleys (original) rusks, buttery mashed potato with a soft boiled egg in the middle, home made mac n cheese (copied from Almazan kitchen on YouTube) and numerous others are ALL my favourites. Can't choose just one ?

As a child, invalid food was Heinz tomato and Ambrosia creamed rice, but trying both recently, found them nothing like I remembered. Reduced salt and sugar maybe?

Comfort food now would be buttery mashed potato with something with gravy or sauce.

I prefer Waitrose tomato soup, which incidentally came a clear 1st in a recent blind tasting by 20 top chefs food writers and critics.
As for comfort food...home made semolina or rice pudding (skin on) with a good quality blackcurrant conserve. Also mature cheddar cheese on thickly sliced toast topped with slices of tomato.

Home made real chips .....

Cheese and onion crisps. Feet up watching a tv drama.

Have to admit that part of the 'comfort' is simplicity of acquisition when I'm poorly and have, in desperation, resorted to tinned Mac cheese. Not as good as my hand knitted version but certainly works when the body seems unwilling. Shocking, eh?!

BRedhead59 Wed 14-Feb-18 13:31:32

Whatever it is don't buy it!

Peardrop50 Wed 14-Feb-18 13:27:33

Sorry to hear that you’re feeling poorly.
Definitely peanut butter on toast before anything else. Also jam sandwiches and strawberry yoghurt when I’m unwell.
Get well soon x

Mapleleaf Wed 14-Feb-18 13:26:36

Chicken soup
Bread, butter and black currant jam

Pieces of thick bread and hot milk with plenty of sugar, as a child and even now in my senior years if I am poorly.
Soon makes me feel better!

I am getting over a bout of the dreaded coughing virus. My comfort food, as usual, was a big bag of kettle chips and then disaster! I lost my appetite and could only face warm water to drink. Not even a slice of hot buttery toast to cheer me up. I was miserable. Still am. ?

raggyanna Wed 14-Feb-18 12:51:49

Just about to have some, homemade bread toasted with marmite!! Any time of day!

grandtanteJE65 Wed 14-Feb-18 12:49:49

Anything milky: custard , rice pudding, porridge made with milk.

If I can't be bothered making any of the above then toast with lashings of butter applied while the toast is hot.

greenbird Wed 14-Feb-18 12:49:08

Thinly sliced white bread with butter and marmalade.
Never ever get a craving for this unless I’m ill (which I have been recently! 1 bout of proper flattening flu and the 2 subsequent cough/cold episodes - ugh!! But loads of marmalade toast ?

annifrance Wed 14-Feb-18 12:45:33

Scrambled eggs on granary toast.

cheneslieges132 Wed 14-Feb-18 12:27:13

My favourite comfort food is Golden Syrup spread thickly on thickly-buttered (proper Butter!) bread!
