I was really disappointed when Force wheatflakes was discontinued and there’s nothing new that’s comparable.

I miss being able to buy bricks of ice-cream. They came in two sizes and I bought the oblong wafers to make the ice-cream sandwiches. You could get plain vanilla or stripey green/strawberry and vanilla or choc/strawb/vanilla.
My favourite brand was Pendleton's Italian.

Cream in a tin. Used to buy it at Sainsbury's. Very useful to have in reserve in the cupboard.

I used to love Kunzle cakes in their chocolate cup case.

Jan T8, come to dinner here tomorrow because that's what we've got!
It's not something we have very often, maybe every 8 weeks, but in this weather it's very comforting! I can't believe I actually look forward to it, because as a child I hated liver. Taste buds change with time.

Craftycat Tue 27-Feb-18 11:40:29

Hollycat- ask your butcher. Mine gives me pork chops with kidney attached now he knows I like them that way. He will cut my liver thick for me too. Apparently most people like it thin but I love a nice thick slice.
My GC don't eat offal at home apparently- well they do here!

ReadyMeals Tue 27-Feb-18 11:42:47

Coffee Crisp bars - used to buy one every afternoon in the shop by my school. I think you can still get them from overseas but the shipping cost is huge. I can't find them here any more.

One of our favourites, chocolate rich tea biscuits, disppeared when the McVities factory closed due to flooding in the not too distant past. They have recently appeared again in one local Co op, but at £1.99 for a small packet are a rare treat.
I love liver and bacon.
Another childhood favourite that I miss is rabbit stew with pearl barley,

chrissie13 Tue 27-Feb-18 11:44:37

Ah Force cereal, never had it myself but apparently it was a favourite of my mum when she was a child. She used to quote the slogan on a regular basis, so much so that I can still remember it! - 'High o'er the fence leaps Sunny Jim, Force is the food that raises him.' lol

I don't think Blancmange powders have been discontinued, but I'm having difficulty finding them in any supermarket during the year. Sainsburys tell me they sometimes have them at Xmas. Do people only make trifle at Xmas?
When I asked the young man in Tescos where I could find blancmange, he asked me what's that?
For my husbands birthday party last weekend I had to improvise and just make extra thick custard to go on top.

Soupy Tue 27-Feb-18 11:47:12

Barmouth biscuits; thy were beautifully golden and crispy.

Lilypops Tue 27-Feb-18 11:47:42

Gmac, I was going to say the same , Heinz vegetable salad in a tin , lovely with boiled ham ,I could eat at in on my own , haven't seen it for years ,

jamtart27 Tue 27-Feb-18 11:50:06

Old Jamaica rum and raisin chocolate , there's one cheap substitute but it's nothing like the original, several places online claim to have it until you try to order it lol

ReadyMeals Tue 27-Feb-18 11:58:15

If anyone is familiar with potato puffs, there used to be another snack that was like potato puffs but longer and thinner and slightly curly. They did BBQ flavour and a cheese and tomato I think. I can't remember what they were called. This would have been about 40 years ago.

Magicmaggie Tue 27-Feb-18 11:58:42

McVitie Cafe Iced Biscuits.
My mother used to get them as a treat for us kids.
Waitrose sold them and then a few years ago my husband bought a packet and I found it had become smaller and the recipe had changed, and it was really horrible.
I was so disappointed?

hereshoping Tue 27-Feb-18 12:06:59

Frozen runner beans don't seem to be around any more, only green beans. Just not the same.

hildajenniJ Tue 27-Feb-18 12:09:48

Symingtons Table Creams. Much better than Blancmange powders.

You can still get Bournvita, it's available on Amazon and eBay, but it's very expensive as it's imported from India.

radicalnan Tue 27-Feb-18 12:10:04

Barmouth biscuits were lovely, yes I remember them, I miss the cooking of certain people, no one does a macaroni cheese quite like Helen did or a stew like mum's........there is a certain sort of magic that is more than the recipe.

Nanny27 Tue 27-Feb-18 12:11:16

Barmouth biscuits yes. And Cafe Noir. Kunzel cakes were delicious but a rare treat. Chocolate blancmange.

winterwhite Tue 27-Feb-18 12:15:05

Jamaican ginger cake and Battenburg cake no longer anything like what they were - just coloured sawdust nowadays

Greengage Tue 27-Feb-18 12:15:49

Magicmaggie Agree with you 100% - lovely biscuits, completely ruined!
Does anyone remember the concentrated blackcurrant puree which came in tins after the war? Loved it on icecream!

Howcome Tue 27-Feb-18 12:23:22

Smedley's tinned Spag Bol- much nicer than Heinz etc great on toast - the Saturday lunch of my teens!! Still crave it.

Hattiehelga Tue 27-Feb-18 12:24:50

Symington Table Cream. I recently contacted them and they have no plans to reintroduce them. My favourite was the Maple and walnut.

GillT57 Tue 27-Feb-18 12:27:55

JamtartTry ALDI, they do a very nice fruit and nut chocolate, stuffed with fruit, and do one with rum as well. Dark purple/red packet.

nettyandmasey Tue 27-Feb-18 12:44:25

Coffee Walnut Whips. M&S do them occasionally but not often enough. I remember having Maple and Walnuts Tables Cream and the tinned vegetable salad.
