I love a salad cream sandwich, but the announcement that Heinz may rename Salad Cream as Sandwich Cream is a step too far.

Always hated salad cream we had mayonnaise preferably with added garlic. Salad never included beetroot which I can’t abide nor picallili which I have never tried

We used to have it as children, then I didn't eat it for years, using Mayo instead. Recently however I had a yearning for it and so have gone back to putting it on tomatoes and lettuce.

'orrible stuff!

Funny article about this in Observer today by David Mitchell, and he also touches on the nonsense that is "choice" in energy suppliers.

M0nica Sun 10-Jun-18 16:30:04

As David Mitchell points out in the Observer today, it isn't made with cream either. So if they change the first word they ought to change the second. Sandwich Sauce?wink

stupid idea!

SueDonim Thu 07-Jun-18 12:35:23

Oh, that's funny, Daisyboots - I always think mayonnaise is rather sweet!

Weird how our perceptions of taste are so different.

Not a big salad cream fan but a bit is nice on a crisp sandwich, has to be plain or cheese and onion crisps though.

Marmite keeps selling, even though the picture of a casserole or marmite seems to have disappeared from the label. No-one has felt the need to find out what people use that for and then change the name accordingly.

I don't like real mayonnaise, only salad cream, preferably Heinz. I bought a pot of potato salad in Waitrose last week which tasted awful. The mayonnaise had a terrible metallic tang.
I too love salad or cheese and beetroot sandwiches with Salad Cream added.
The proposed re-naming of Salad Cream to Sandwich Cream is a step too far. I will be emailing them about it. angrygrin

Daddima, we had the same meal except the ham was YeOlde Oak ham- a tin of ham that, by the time the jelly was scraped off yielded a bit of ham about the same size as a ten pence piece!

I used to eat it when I was young. In the 70s we lived next door to an American couple and she introduced me to Hellman's mayonnaise. After that salad cream tasted far too sweet. We have it in the house because DH loves it. But definitely a no from me.

Hate the stuff

sweetcakes Wed 06-Jun-18 16:53:42

chrissyh going to have to give that sandwich a go I think, is it finely chopped or could I thinly slice it?

Feelingmyage55 Wed 06-Jun-18 16:39:21

Renaming it is not as bad as changing the recipe to “new, improved ..”. As long as it tastes the same I will ignore the new label.

Sheilasue Wed 06-Jun-18 16:25:34

Ooo no mayonnaise for me. My son loved salad cream only way he would eat a salad, especially when he played cricket and got a tea.

lollee Wed 06-Jun-18 14:57:16

Potato salad definitely has more taste when made with salad cream. Finely chopped red onion and freshly ground black pepper too.

Lupatria Wed 06-Jun-18 14:56:07

I think this a very bad idea - everyone knows you can use salad cream in sandwiches. unless they're really stupid [sorry i'm so angry].
if you feel strongly about this proposed name change do what I did and visit www.heinz.co.uk and find 'contact us' to let them know. hopefully if enough people do this they'll change their minds.

Have just read Fennel’s link. All is revealed about the origins of salad cream! Thank you.

Oops have just read Fennel’s link. Thank you , all is revealed!

I have a vague memory of being told/reading/seeing on television that salad cream was invented during either WW1 or WW2 , as a substitute for mayonnaise? Because it does not contain eggs or other more expensive ingredients??? Don’t know if this is so.....

pollyperkins Wed 06-Jun-18 12:45:50

Thanks Fennel!

Aepgirl Wed 06-Jun-18 12:24:06

I haven't had salad cream for years, but I just want to go and buy some now to make a brown bread sandwich - nothing else, just bread and salad cream. Didn't there used to be jars of salad cream with 'bits' in that they called sandwich spread - is that still available?

I don't like salad cream either but one of my daughters loves it. When she went on school coach trips no one would sit next to her as she always had egg and salad cream sandwiches
Yuk.
