The CO2 shortage has claimed its latest victim.
Forget the fizzy drinks, beer, cider or chicken packaging.
Now Warburton’s have had to halt production of their crumpets (the bubbles, you know)

Can Britain cope?
Can we blame Brexit?
???

Bridgeit Fri 29-Jun-18 18:29:03

Yes we can cope
Can we blame Brexit, yes definitely why not ?
Will we survive without crumpets? I will, can’t speak for the rest of you.
I do miss the 1950s early 60s, surprised we all survived !??

Menopaws Fri 29-Jun-18 18:33:08

Now I really fancy crumpets and a beer

paddyann Fri 29-Jun-18 18:36:30

and here was me thinking it was yeast that made the bubbles

Baggs Fri 29-Jun-18 18:41:37

Is there a shortage of bicarbonate of soda?

Baggs Fri 29-Jun-18 18:43:22

I don't quite get the word "shortage" in relation to carbon dioxide either. One minute there's too much of it and the next....

Can"t keep up! ?

Elegran Fri 29-Jun-18 18:48:12

I don't think the crumpet maufacturers have worked out yet how to pipe the surplus Co2 from the atmosphere directly into their products.

trisher Fri 29-Jun-18 18:57:42

Oh No!!! Never mind a third runway at Heathrow, our MPs should be dealing with this crucial shortage and making sure our crumpet supply is properly protected.

Ilovecheese Fri 29-Jun-18 18:58:42

I think it's for the packaging, not the actual crumpets, but I could be wrong.

Chewbacca Fri 29-Jun-18 19:24:44

My OH will be very disappointed. He loves crumpet.

kittylester Fri 29-Jun-18 19:40:55

I'm so glad I bought 2 packs of gf ones yesterday!

trisher Fri 29-Jun-18 19:47:37

2 packs kittylester??? that looks like Crumpet Hoarding. There are heavy penalties you know!

Cherrytree59 Fri 29-Jun-18 19:56:12

Well did warn GN t'other daysmile

Iam64 Fri 29-Jun-18 19:57:22

Thank goodness I have a pack of 6 Warbies crumpets safely in the bread bin. They're unbeatable with lots of lurpak dripping through them, especially with either strangled eggs or a smidgeon of honey.

Chewbacca Fri 29-Jun-18 20:03:58

Strangled eggs Iam64? Is that legal? grin

Wheniwasyourage Fri 29-Jun-18 20:16:52

Please stop talking about crumpets with melted butter! I haven't had one for ages, and now I want one. Or two...

I knew we should have gone further into carbon capture - then we would have had as many crumpets and pints as we want.

annsixty Fri 29-Jun-18 20:49:15

Did any of you grow up with Pikelets?
Thinner and flatter versions of crumpets.
I think they may only have been made by local independent bakers.

Jalima1108 Fri 29-Jun-18 21:12:23

wot about Scotch pancakes - do they need CO2?
shock

and here was me thinking it was yeast that made the bubbles
Is there a shortage of bicarbonate of soda?

I thought it was bicarb?

What will they think of next?
Remember the toilet roll shortage anyone? Then, when they came back on sale, they were at least twice the price as before.

Jalima1108 Fri 29-Jun-18 21:13:24

We have strangled eggs as well
by any other name would taste as sweet ...

Joelise Fri 29-Jun-18 21:20:20

Co2 is used in the packaging of food products to prolong their shelf life.

Chewbacca Fri 29-Jun-18 21:22:53

I remember pikelets annsixty. There used to be a shop in Ashton under Lyne, back in the 1950s/60s that sold them when they were warm. mmmmmm!

Chewbacca Fri 29-Jun-18 21:35:43

Jalima, how do I strangle an egg? Is it a delicacy only to be enjoyed with crumpets?

Iam64 Sat 30-Jun-18 07:51:15

Chewbacca, strangled eggs have been a delicacy in this house for almost 30 years. One of our toddlers asked for strangled eggs for breakfast. They need butter, a medium to low heat and to have been beaten to within an inch of their lives before being strangled. A real delicacy.

Nanabilly Sat 30-Jun-18 08:00:35

Lol strangled eggs reminds me of when our eldest could not say spaghetti so called it buscetti. It was buscetti for years in our house.
He could not say Timothy either when we had second baby so Timothy became Tibberty.
Loads of crumpets in tesco and Morrison's yesterday .The media do like to cause a frenzy. I like them but can live without them and will have to if they come back after this supposed shortage at double the price.

rockgran Sat 30-Jun-18 08:45:17

Luckily I hate fizzy drinks and am vegetarian so not feeling the shortage too badly. You can have my share of crumpets. grin
