Where has this fad for salted caramel come from? We are being urged to cut down on salt and sugar intake but now the latest trend is to put salt in our desserts and sweets too.

I havent heard of salted caramel until today, I dont live in the UK. I am a "salt person" I enjoy sea salt chocolate and LOVE salty licquorice which is popular over here, there is sweet or salt licqourice, it is suggested eating too much licqourice increases blood pressure, whether it is salty or not, you just cant win!

Don't go with the fad. I make caramel sauce with ordinary salted butter - don't add any extra salt at all. I'm always told it's just right! Needless to say say I only make as a treat now and again

Im afraid I just love everything salty. So salted caramel is way up the list. Always salt my porridge and serve with a sprinkle of muscovado sugar and cinnamon. Sometimes I have .a very guilty spoon of cream on it too. ? I take after my dad who threw a bucket of salt in all his food - he lived to 95. I also have naturally low blood pressure and am not overweight, thankfully.

I was in a holiday resort in Australia recently and favorited the salted caramel ice cream from the Italian ice cream shop. They said it was the best seller by far!

Salted caramel ice cream. My go to favourite treat. You’ve wet my appetite now. Oh dear holding back the urge.

Mmmmmm.... I just adore salted caramel anything!
This has reminded me that I need to make more salted caramel ice cream and sauce before Christmas.

I used to make Russian toffees with my Grannie and she always put in a generous pinch of salt, so where has this 'salted' bit come from? It's nothing new.

I recently had a dessert in a pub in Rye. Chocolate and salted caramel milk tart with caramelised bananas and clotted cream. I died and went to heaven three times and am now back down to earth searching for a recipe.

Any idea, French gransnetters, where to get clotted cream?

Izabella, I well remember my sister adding salt to our porridge one day when we were younger. I heaved with every mouthful! When I got to school I 'recycled' it on the playground! She never added salt again. Ughhh!

I’m sure it’s not good for me, but I absolutely love it in anything, salted caramel ice-cream, salted caramel fudge, salted caramel anything at all.

Salted caramel is the best thing EVER. Particularly ice cream.

Salted caramel is delicious. Chocolate, ice cream, etc. Chilli chocolate good too.

When I first sighted the combination I had a yuck thought but curiosity got the better of me and I'm now a devotee.

There’s nothing wrong with consuming sugary cakes as a general point- it’s how much and how often that is the point.

baubles Tue 06-Nov-18 10:09:50

Salted caramel is my favourite flavour and I have a very sweet tooth. Whoever dreamed it up is a genius smile

acanthus Tue 06-Nov-18 10:05:39

On the subject of healthy eating, am I the only one who finds it rather strange that Macmillan should raise funds by encouraging us to consume lots of sugary cakes - surely something to be discouraged in the light of cancer prevention? I know, I know.... I'm being a killjoy, but surely they could come up with a healthier option?

Salted caramel ice cream is heaven on earth.

I've never had a sweet tooth but love ice cream so long as it doesn't have a sickly flavour.

I love salted caramel. And sweet and salty popcorn. Before it was 'invented' we always used to ask for a mix if we bought it at the cinema

MissAdventure Mon 05-Nov-18 20:58:29

Haunt? Hasn't!

MissAdventure Mon 05-Nov-18 20:51:40

For anyone who haunt tried it, the sweet and salty popcorn is really nice, if your taste is that way inclined.

PamelaJ1 Mon 05-Nov-18 20:49:47

I’m with the minority. It’s horrible.

I found salted caramel oats in the health food shop today. Needless to say it won't be going in my porridge. My problem is I love salt I could eat savoury things all day and still crave more. As you say Izabella if you have been told no salt and you get used to that you can taste it straight away in anything.
