At last! We have found local butcher who makes a most enjoyable and superior tomato sausage. My query is - are these generally available or are they largely a regional thing?

You can’t beat Clonakilty black pudding sausages. grin

Proper butcher's sausages aren't full of additives - they're lovely! I bought some yesterday at a local farmers' market.

No tomato sausages here in Northern Ireland but our butcher's all do an amazing range of delicious flavours with good quality meat. Sweet chilli are my favourites and we can get lovely steak sausages. We need them here you see for our Ulster Fry! Got to admit we don't partake of this very often now but what a great treat when we do. In case you wonder what an Ulster Fry entails it is bacon, sausage, black pudding, fried tomato (not tinned!) Mushrooms, egg, fried soda farl and potato bread. Basically a heart attack on a plate, hence an occasional treat.

Husband won't eat tomatoes, so whatever they are not for us.

Like one or two others, I've never heard of tomato sausages, what actually ARE they?

My father used to bring tomato sausages home when returning from business trips in England. In recent years I have been able to buy such sausages in Carlisle - a distance of some 120 miles from home.

Oh yes lovely! I was born in Lincolnshire and though now in Essex, each time we go back to visit we bring some home for us and for the other family members who have moved south. We always boiled ours and poured some of the liquor over the mashed pots. Yummy!!

Does no one think about sausages being full of additives. They and bacon are one of the causes of bowel cancer.

No, I've never heard of tomato sausages either. I did get some gorgeous ones from a Craft & Food Fair recently - Wild Boar with Black Pudding, they were absolutely bursting with flavour. A good sausage is a truly wonderful thing.

My Yorkshire butcher who stayed in business until the late 1970s made delicious tomato sausages. My next butcher (now retired) didn't make them although his sausages were very good.

I've never heard of them either but am now slobbering like a Labrador . We've got a Farmer's Market on next week so I'll have have a sniff around there !

I'm in the 'never heard of them' camp - worried about what I'm missing now grin

Oh Izabella! You have brought back wonderful memories! I remember tomato sausages - loved them! I am now going to try and track some down! smile

I haven't seen any tomato sausages for ages, and I live oop north.
Beef sausages also seem to have largely disappeared from the shelves. I prefer them to pork. I agree that it's difficult to find tasty bangers any more. Even the allegedly best quality ones from the supermarkets aren't very nice, so I rarely eat them now.
When my son was working in the Lake District he used to bring home sausages from a prize-winning butcher's shop, whose name escapes me. There were lots of different flavours, and they were delicious.

Our local garden centre sells tomatoe sausages they are lovely . When my ac were children I used to make sausages in gravy and for speed I added a packet of veg soup it was one of their favourite meals .

Am I the only person who has never heard of tomato sausages?

Sheilasue Fri 23-Nov-18 15:12:36

Never heard of them.

mabon1 Fri 23-Nov-18 12:33:22

Edwards of Conwy (prize winning local butcher) has a wonderful selection of locally made sausages, they are delicious.

The West Midlands is home to the best tomato sausage. When my parents moved to Somerset, they used to ask me to bring some with me whenever I visited, as they were unheard of in the SW.

Baggs have you tried the wholesale butcher in Ferry Hinksey Rd, we come up from Uxbridge to shop there.

Kim19 Fri 23-Nov-18 12:03:38

My Mum used to buy these comparatively regularly when I was a child. I thought they had disappeared from the marketplace. Must have a look (and perhaps a try!). Thanks.

Craftycat Fri 23-Nov-18 11:57:22

We get our sausages from Supreme Sausages online & they are wonderful. We first tasted them at Ideal Home Exhibition in London & ordered them straight away- must be 15 or more years ago now. They come from somewhere in Oxfordshire in a polystyrene box packed with ice packs & the packs are always still frozen when they arrive. They are Red Tractor approved too.
They do loads of flavours but our favourites are Chalgrove Old English- make wonderful Toad in the Hole & Red wine & garlic which make a sausage casserole a real treat. We do order other flavours but these are our regular preferences.
Well worth a try - look at some of the big food shows for them or their website- I have to say the staff there are charming too-nothing is too much trouble.
Mmmm- I fancy Toad in Hole tonight now!

I've never even heard of tomato sausages. Are they made entirely of tomatoes, or are they meat and tomato?

Living so close to the Danish-German border we have excellent sausages with a wide variety of flavourings.

eGJ Fri 23-Nov-18 11:17:46

Bought some tomato sausages yesterday and enjoyed a couple last night! My local butcher makes a wide variety of different sausages, but his chilli sausages are anything but chilly! grin

sarahellenwhitney Fri 23-Nov-18 11:09:57

I believed it to be a regional thing when many years ago I visited the relatives of a man I married from 'oop north'.?
Although we made moves concerning DH work I never found tomato sausages anywhere else.
