At last! We have found local butcher who makes a most enjoyable and superior tomato sausage. My query is - are these generally available or are they largely a regional thing?

MiniMoon Thu 22-Nov-18 10:42:18

Our local butcher makes tomato sausages. They are very good, but not as good as the ones DH used to make in his shop.
Those were the days! I wish we still had the business, but it was in competition with the big supermarkets and we were forced to sell the property.

You don't know what goes in sausages. My dad would never eat them.

Greyduster Thu 22-Nov-18 13:32:19

Tomato sausages figured on our menu quite often when I was a child and I hated it, and still do, but the butcher who made them also made the best pork sausages I have ever eaten. Sadly he died and the shop closed. We don’t eat sausages very often now, but if we are ever up in Masham, there is a butcher there whose wild boar sausages are sublime!

I don't like tomato sausages!
We enjoy a good sausage but it's becoming increasingly difficult to find them . They have all gone gluten free and are vile . God knows what they are putting in them .
It's not always easy for me to get to the local farm shops but when I do I shall stock up.

Asda finest Lincolnshire sausages yum ! DD MiL lives in Lincolnshire her local village butcher makes his own....must get DD to get me some.
I've never tried tomato sausages, not sure I'd like them much.

As I understand it, EV, every part of a pig is edible so perhaps it doesn't matter which parts go into pork sausages.

We had some really good ones recently from the Co-op.

There used to be a sausage shop in Oxford Covered Market that sold all sorts of sausages. Some of them were really good. Sadly, it closed.

I make a tasty winter casserole with beef sausages (or pork if you prefer), onions and apples. Brown everything off a bit first, cover with some stock, then bake in a medium oven for about an hour.
Serve with mashed potatoes.
Thanks to DD1 for the recipe.

We have a local farmshop/pig producer. He does a roaring trade with his various delicious sausages.

Love tomatoes, but not in a sausage, only _with a sausage.

EllanVannin Thu 22-Nov-18 19:25:48

Wow Fennel you've given me an idea for Saturday. I've got a pack of diced pork in the freezer.Thankyou for that, sounds lovely, by way of a change.

You might need to reduce the sauce until it thickens.

I don't like the tough plastic type skin that some use now. It's often on the more expensive sausages too. It puts me right off a good sausage;-)

I believed it to be a regional thing when many years ago I visited the relatives of a man I married from 'oop north'.?
Although we made moves concerning DH work I never found tomato sausages anywhere else.

Bought some tomato sausages yesterday and enjoyed a couple last night! My local butcher makes a wide variety of different sausages, but his chilli sausages are anything but chilly! grin

I've never even heard of tomato sausages. Are they made entirely of tomatoes, or are they meat and tomato?

Living so close to the Danish-German border we have excellent sausages with a wide variety of flavourings.

We get our sausages from Supreme Sausages online & they are wonderful. We first tasted them at Ideal Home Exhibition in London & ordered them straight away- must be 15 or more years ago now. They come from somewhere in Oxfordshire in a polystyrene box packed with ice packs & the packs are always still frozen when they arrive. They are Red Tractor approved too.
They do loads of flavours but our favourites are Chalgrove Old English- make wonderful Toad in the Hole & Red wine & garlic which make a sausage casserole a real treat. We do order other flavours but these are our regular preferences.
Well worth a try - look at some of the big food shows for them or their website- I have to say the staff there are charming too-nothing is too much trouble.
Mmmm- I fancy Toad in Hole tonight now!

My Mum used to buy these comparatively regularly when I was a child. I thought they had disappeared from the marketplace. Must have a look (and perhaps a try!). Thanks.

Baggs have you tried the wholesale butcher in Ferry Hinksey Rd, we come up from Uxbridge to shop there.

The West Midlands is home to the best tomato sausage. When my parents moved to Somerset, they used to ask me to bring some with me whenever I visited, as they were unheard of in the SW.

Edwards of Conwy (prize winning local butcher) has a wonderful selection of locally made sausages, they are delicious.

Sheilasue Fri 23-Nov-18 15:12:36

Never heard of them.

hereshoping Fri 23-Nov-18 15:53:03

Am I the only person who has never heard of tomato sausages?

hulahoop Fri 23-Nov-18 16:41:20

Our local garden centre sells tomatoe sausages they are lovely . When my ac were children I used to make sausages in gravy and for speed I added a packet of veg soup it was one of their favourite meals .

GreenGran78 Fri 23-Nov-18 17:51:24

I haven't seen any tomato sausages for ages, and I live oop north.
Beef sausages also seem to have largely disappeared from the shelves. I prefer them to pork. I agree that it's difficult to find tasty bangers any more. Even the allegedly best quality ones from the supermarkets aren't very nice, so I rarely eat them now.
When my son was working in the Lake District he used to bring home sausages from a prize-winning butcher's shop, whose name escapes me. There were lots of different flavours, and they were delicious.

Oh Izabella! You have brought back wonderful memories! I remember tomato sausages - loved them! I am now going to try and track some down! smile
