Returning from the hairdressers today, I treated myself to a packet of low fat, sour cream and chive crisps.
Whilst idly munching, I turned the packet over to read the full list of ingredients and noted they were made in DENMARK.
Why why why?
I was also wearing M&S knickers at the time, which are made in Bangladesh.
???

wellwalked

Many thanks for the link.
I've just been perusing the site and 5 pairs trousers, all wide leg and not good for shopping or daily activities unless you're a lady who lunches and touching £100 per pair...yikes!
Bardot tops for £89, shoes that are really quirky but made from 3 or 4 different patterns of leather in yellow, blue pink and check, all on the same shoe. Sale prices around the £70 mark, down from £99+.
Dresses likewise.
Until more clothes and shoes are manufactured here, prices will remain exclusive.
Yull cater to a niche market and the sale priced items had only 1 or sizes left.
The only pair I might have bought (but only size 3 left) were some court shoes with a green leaf pattern and white toe tips. Quite quirky.
I'll keep looking and again, thanks for sending the link. smile

Go commando? shock

GabriellaG54 www.makeitbritish.co.uk - you may find something on there; yes, we will have to get used to less choice (really such an issue?) and paying a proper price for many previously cheap items or do without..quelle horror!

Maggiemaybe Thu 21-Feb-19 11:06:12

Well, I was wondering if they were the, ahem, undercover operation behind Kinky Knickers. hmm

Jane10 Thu 21-Feb-19 10:32:12

I couldn't possibly wear knickers! They sound too frivolous for me. I wear pants! No nonsense about them whatsoever grin
I wish I could get some from 'Underworld' the factory in Corrie.

Maggiemaybe Thu 21-Feb-19 09:46:53

Kinky Knickers (careful how you google it!), made in Manchester, are around £15 a pair, so yes, much dearer. They get rave reviews re comfort and quality. I might have tried a pair or two, following my new mantra of buy better, buy fewer, but I think the huge stock of knickers already crammed into my underbed box will see me out!

Jane10 Thu 21-Feb-19 09:03:06

Imagine how expensive the pants would be if made in Britain?!

Magrithea Thu 21-Feb-19 08:59:48

There was a time when the label in M&S goods read 'St Michael' and 'Made in Britain'!!

GabriellaG54 Wed 20-Feb-19 22:38:18

Of course, lemongrove I would never deign to sully your eyes with a photo of knicker-wearing me.
Not a good idea. ??

lemongrove Wed 20-Feb-19 22:07:30

I always try and buy British, there are plenty about ( of everything) but maybe not socks, they all seem to be made in China.

lemongrove Wed 20-Feb-19 22:05:53

Not that I wear your knickers of course ( mine are a bit larger, more Bridget Jones.)

lemongrove Wed 20-Feb-19 22:04:51

Wow Gabriella you look a helluva lot better than me in your knickers.?

GabriellaG54 Wed 20-Feb-19 21:07:05

Had I been parading in only my white hi-leg midi underwear, M&S food hall would have been devoid of customers and M&S would have paid me to leave.

GabriellaG54 Wed 20-Feb-19 20:42:02

You're spot-on Jalima1108

Jalima1108 Wed 20-Feb-19 20:21:36

They never seem to have what are probably the most popular sizes in my nearest M&S.
"Oh, they sell out quickly because they are popular"

Well - order more then!

The sales racks are full of 8, 10 and 20+

Yes, I did indeed vote for Brexit and, as a vegetarian, I wouldn't be eating spam anyway. Swede and locally grown seasonal veg are readily available where I live in South Surrey.
As for clothes, I have plenty to be going on with but, should I need more, Bangladesh and China aren't in the EU so no problem there. When the UK start manufacturing more clothes here, then I shall, naturally, change my shopping habits.

Oh dear!
16 regular is my size too, at least in M&S, although I do have several pairs of bootcut jeans in size 14 regular which still fit.
The chinos I recently purchased were not, at the time, available on the rails in a regular length although 16s in small and long were, so I ordered them delivered to store.
Perhaps you could find your required style online.
On Monday I bought some short sleeved 100% cotton pjs in store, pale green with printed wooly sheep on the bottoms as I had a 20% discount on nightwear. Only £10 so, as the discount expires Thurs, I ordered another pair in a different colourway today.
Yep...Bangladesh again. There's no getting away from it.
Finding food, clothes or anything made in Britain nowadays, is like panning for gold. A fools errand. shock??

Nanniejc1 Wed 20-Feb-19 18:35:29

We should all be buying British where we can, there are lots of small businesses that rely on local trade.I use my local butcher,I like to know where my meat comes from.

trendygran Wed 20-Feb-19 17:51:21

Have to agree Greyduster. I went to look at jeans in M and S the other day as I saw they had new styles in. Of course they had none in my size( 16 regular ) in the one I might have bought. Long live jeans from Bonmarche-they fit perfectly and are cheaper. The leg length is better too.

I’ve just been spurred on by this thread to check out our local M & S crisps (security alert, suspicious woman in aisle 3 fondling packet snacks!). I’m pleased to say that 90% of them were made in the UK. I’m not too happy about the change from Dyson hand-driers to Mitsubishi in the ladies’ loos though. sad

Maggiemaybe Wed 20-Feb-19 17:05:09

I find myself looking for locally made goods these days, and it seems there are more on offer. I really want to reduce my carbon footprint, for the sake of my grandchildren. And I won’t be limited when it comes to fruit and veg, 123coco, as we grow many of ours ourselves. I’m certainly not drawn to buy from EU poly tunnel wastelands, where cheap labour is bought in from poorer countries to work in abysmal conditions.

Telly Wed 20-Feb-19 17:02:25

Tyrrells crisps are made in England!

maddyone Wed 20-Feb-19 16:34:33

Crisps made in Denmark, knickers madein Bangladesh. I know and understand the arguments for free trade and for supporting developing countries with trade, but the the other side of the coin is the carbon footprint. Bringing in goods from abroad that could have been made in Britain is adding a huge carbon footprint to the world. That will be the legacy our grandchildren inherit.

madmum38 Wed 20-Feb-19 16:11:21

I always liked the Smiths bovril crisps but Smiths has disappeared from any shop I know

aggie Wed 20-Feb-19 15:31:57

Tayto are up the road from me , their cheese and onion are legendary smile
