It seams that only a few weeks have past since we were treated to news of talks taking place between Ocado and M&S
now the happy coupple have announced there engagement to the world and Ocado has told its lover of 19 years that its over.
The marriage will take place in 2020 when Ocado's divorce is announced.
A costly wedding will follow (£750m) and friends of the soon-to-be ex, are already crying on Twitter I enjoy shopping in both stores but find the quality in M&S is much better, especialy the fruit its worth paying the extra 'pennys'.
I wonder if and how the 'middle classes' will ajust although many are GNs who shop at Aldi Lidl Tesco and Sainsbury so it won't effect them.
It's not thought that Waitrose will invest in its own fleet of vans so it remains to be seen as to how they will overcome that obstacle.
Its all change in Blighty.

I do understand your super organised shopping though M0nica. I have lived in totally rural areas (not even villages) with “local” shops (miles away) were hideously expensive. At that point I bought lots of things in bulk, setting up a “buying group” with friends. This meant purchasing 5 kg of rice or lentils or a case of peanut butter for example but it did mean that alongside our own vegetables there was always something to eat.
Simpler times in lots of ways. Hard work but happy.

M0nica Fri 01-Mar-19 08:33:31

Well, there is a small very expensive Co-op in the village (£1.49 for a tin of tomatoes). which is an incentive to efficient shopping.

However, I am the Queen of LISTS.

Urmstongran Fri 01-Mar-19 08:30:54

Gosh MOnica I bet you’ve learned to be super organised! I’d get home and realise I’d forgotten to buy milk....

M0nica Fri 01-Mar-19 08:18:25

Rural living means that you rarely go near shops unless you go out specifically to visit them.

I am away at the moment but comeback tomorrow, getting home at midnight, my journey from port to home, all motorway or dual carriage way takes me past no shops. I may go to church on Sunday in the next village, lots of fields and new housing estates, but shops? No.

I then probably will not leave the village until Thursday, my shopping day, when I will combine my shop with a hair cut and beautician's appointment. The following week looks much the same.

shopping tarts grin

Apologies M0nica and Maggiemaybe

I am pretty free and easy, not very loyal - only as far as shopping is concerned!

NotSpaghetti Thu 28-Feb-19 18:49:14

I am a shopping tart grin but not, M0nica because I love shopping as I really really don’t!
I shop mainly where I’m doing things for other reasons. So Waitrose when visiting my mother in law, Asda, Lidl or Morrison’s when at home as all close and have parking, M&S if in town or on foot, and the Co-op or one other the others if I want to shop on the way home from work.
On top of this, twice a year (maybe 3 times) I bulk buy tea from F&M as they have lots of choice.
If I’m doing an online shop (rarely) it depends what sort of shopping I want. So although I prefer to shop in some more than others, I’m not just shopping tart, I’m a lazy one too!

Maggiemaybe Thu 28-Feb-19 17:47:36

M0nica shopping tarts indeed!! shock

That was me, Jalima blush

In fairness I was referring to myself. I wouldn’t impugn the fine reputation of other GNers. grin

Jalima1108 Thu 28-Feb-19 17:36:17

Oh, I forgot Iceland! grin

Jalima1108 Thu 28-Feb-19 17:35:19

M0nica shopping tarts indeed!! shock

We have limited choice here so usually combine shopping with a visit somewhere

janeainsworth Thu 28-Feb-19 17:34:33

Not if you've had a Fortnum and Mason's delivery Jalima.
Some of us dream of shopping at Fortnum & Mason'sgrin

Jalima1108 Thu 28-Feb-19 17:30:09

I shop at Waitrose, Tesco, Sainsbury's, Morrisons, M&S, Lidl, Home Bargains, had a Fortnum and Mason delivery at Christmas, rarely Aldi, Asda.
However, I've never had an Ocado delivery

Does that make me working class?
It's so difficult to know after one retires.

GrannyIris5 Thu 28-Feb-19 17:22:11

Riverwalk I hate incorrect spelling too. Where did these people go to school?

Charleygirl5 Thu 28-Feb-19 17:08:35

I cannot wait because all I drink is M&S coffee. When I have the car I usually buy around 10 jars at a time but when I can no longer drive it will be great to have the jars delivered.

I do a lot of online shopping at Morrisons, I visit my local Waitrose which is a less than a mile away and I have shopped at Sainsbury's today for something specific. The only store not within a 3 mile radius of my house is the Co-Op.

Auntieflo Thu 28-Feb-19 16:31:54

I think our local Waitrose has shot itself in the foot rather. Parking used to be for 2 hours free, if shopping there, although it was taken advantage of a bit. Now all is changed, and parking is only for 1 1/2 hours. So, if you are meeting a friend for a coffee, then shopping, there now isn’t time. Perhaps they will lose out in the coffee shop, or in the number of people who shop for groceries. Time will tell.

Maggiemaybe Thu 28-Feb-19 15:57:00

Love shopping, M0nica? confused Far from it. I shop online. As I said, we’ll probably make an exception and go to Sainsburys this time because their delivery fees are high. Or perhaps we’ll just pay the fee - life’s too short to trail round doing a big shop! Topping up is done when I’m looking after the grandchildren in two different towns and passing a shop.

Day6 Thu 28-Feb-19 15:51:23

It's the same here merlotgran. The car parks in Lidl and Aldi always have new, pricey and upmarket cars in them. People load up their trolleys with continental foods and especially wine!

Slowly, slowly, those with a bit of money discovered the value to be had at Aldi and Lidl. Our nearest Waitrose never seems to have busy periods.

I love an M&S Food Hall. That's my destination at Christmas and for special occasions. I like a browse around there now and again and buy the odd food treat we don't really need. I often pop into the M&S cafe for coffee if I am meeting friends.

janeainsworth Thu 28-Feb-19 15:44:18

janeainsworth you couldn't be more wrong. I have no particular allegiance to any shop, the closest usually get more of my custom which is normal but, I do have preferences for certain items which are sold in particular stores. Nothing unusual in that
I don’t think I passed comment on your shopping habits gabriella, nor do they hold any interest for meconfused

MissAdventure Thu 28-Feb-19 15:43:58

Yes, there's something to be said for getting it all done in one 'hit'.

M0nica Thu 28-Feb-19 15:41:11

All you 'shopping tarts' obviously live in places with lots of different supermarkets close by and also obviously love shopping.

Every supermarket trip I do involves a 10 mile round trip to a local town. I try to do everything in one weekly trip and then find other things to do.

Maggiemaybe Thu 28-Feb-19 14:19:15

I’m a shopping tart as well, NotSpaghetti. Currently using Ocado because they’ve sent me four weekly £10 off vouchers and a free 3 month delivery pass. I’ve some Sainsbury £12 and £10 off vouchers to use after that - we’ll probably use those in store as their delivery charges are high. By the time those vouchers are done I can guarantee Tesco will have noticed I haven’t shopped there for a while and have sent a few vouchers. I buy a few bits in Aldi, the Co-op and Morrisons when we’re passing, and meal deals when they’re on in M & S (we got a pulled pork joint for 6 last time as our “main course” and stuck it in the freezer). There’s little to choose between any of them imho, and most of them price match. Play the field, it pays dividends!

GrannyGravy13 Thu 28-Feb-19 14:07:11

I use Waitrose delivery, pop into M & S foodhall probably once a week and use Aldi and Sainsbury's. The M & S delivery service would come in handy at Christmas, Easter and special occasions.

EllanVannin Thu 28-Feb-19 13:42:20

I'm too far away, Riverwalk, in fact over 200 miles too far smile

Riverwalk Thu 28-Feb-19 13:18:18

Ellan I sometimes shop at F&M as can walk there. They do online deliveries for those of you who live further away. smile

NotSpaghetti Thu 28-Feb-19 13:18:02

gonegirl - I love my fitflops but they aren’t the “well-heeled” ones grin

But then I’m one of those shoppers who can’t be trusted - one day I’m in Lidl, the next time I’m in M&S or Asda, Or maybe Morrison’s Sainsbury’s, the Co-op or Waitrose. I have been known to use the market or Tesco - but not generally Aldi as not nearly close enough.

I am just as fickle with my online orders which are only occasional, so I don’t think this change with M&S will affect me personally.

EllanVannin Thu 28-Feb-19 13:10:41

If there was a Fortnum and Mason shop in the area I'd be shopping there too ! It's got nothing whatsoever to do about class/status it's my own personal preference for decent tasting food !
