Fish fingers

I was in M&S on Tues and bought their own make of 'Wheat free' fish fingers. A box of 9 is £3.
I've had them once before and, although not allergic to gluten, these are far and away the best I've ever tasted and came top in a recent blind tasting from all brands sold in major supermarkets.
Meaty cuts of cod (not bits stuck together) in a very crisp coating.
I also bought a pack of mini-submarine rolls £1.50 for 6, which have a semolina crust...very nice.
Instead of putting the oven on I cooked 3 pin a ceramic pan which I wiped with a smear of oil.
One fits into a sub roll exactly and I had 3, smeared with butter and a dollop of good old Heinz ketchup plus.a small bowl of coleslaw on the side.
It might be a nice cheap but nutritious tea/supper for children with a few oven fries and tub of mushy peas.
A change from sausages, burgers or nuggets which often have nitrates and nitrites added.
Waitrose chunky fingers are nowhere near as nice and they're floppy.
Has anyone tried the M&S version?

M&S best fish fingers ever .

Because of all this talk of fish fingers when it came to choosing my dinner last - Mr R cooks on Saturdays - I 'ordered' fish fingers, peas and oven chips and, with a big dollop of ketchup, it was lovely. (Not M&S gluten free BTW as I haven't bought any yet but will do soon!)
You see we are simple folk, foodwise, when Mr R cooks - but we can still enjoy our dinners. grin

Can I just say that so called 'fresh' fish can be up to 20 days old when you buy it but fish destined for the frozen market is gutted, de-scaled and frozen immediately the catch is landed on the boat, therefore when you buy it it's as fresh as when it was caught.
There have been numerous articles and tv programmes about fresh v frozen fish.
Unless you live in Whitby or a fishing port or village, then your so called fresh fish isn't really that fresh.

maddyone

Yeah...but you fry them.
Fried food...no.

Just out of curiosity, I looked to see how many brands of fish finger we have in one of our biggest supermarkets. Including the Quorn no-fish fingers, there are 5 brands.

I've never had a fish finger in my life and these don't tempt me. They are far more expensive than buying the equivalent amount of fresh fish.

My little son (5 at that time) once described these as 'orange things with bobbles on them' when he had them at school dinners.
I don't think he's eaten them since either but I understand children love them.

I’m with Paddyanne here, my husband makes his own fish fingers when the grandchildren come, a very, very light batter, and cod or haddock inside. Much better in my opinion to anything you can buy. He also does the very light batter and makes his own chicken nuggets, much better than anything commercial and the children love them.

I love ff. I usually have Birds Eye but we have a new M&S foodstore just opened so I will try these. And the little rolls. Thanks.

I agree their food is a bit more expensive than Tesco or Sainsburys so not everyone can afford it.

So GabriellaG54 I've never frozen cut veg. But sounds good. I throw a lot out. Do I just chop and freeze?

They'll be doing deliveries next year gillybob...from the end of June, I'm told.
Meanwhile, let me know the name of your local Post Office and I'll send you a box of mini subs addressed to Ms gillybob c/o the post office at xxxx (name of road)
That way you preserve your anonymity and get the rolls. Eat some freeze some. ??

GabriellaG54 Sat 17-Aug-19 20:39:59

Erm...I don't know if they do haddock ones, is the honest answer.
I do know they sell haddock every other way but may be an idea to ring and ask them.

As for plastic free...yes, the fingers are just in the cardboard box...no plastic at all.

Esspee
I've no idea what the 99p ones are that you mention...can you please let me know.
They can't be fish fingers.

I had 3 more of the M&S ones this evening, in mini subs with Heinz ketchup and some thin-ish oven chips in a home-made paper cone.
Delish ??
They really are 5*.

I agree Framilode. Their prices for GF foods are no higher than the well known brands and I think that they are so much nicer.

Missfoodlove Fri 16-Aug-19 18:00:39

I use Cous cous as an alternative to breadcrumbs. Just soak then dip the fish/meat in egg and coat in the cous cous,

gillybob Fri 16-Aug-19 17:32:08

I bought s box of Birds Eye Haddock FF’s today with my shopping but forgot to get bread buns . No M&S in my town and I really, really want those little sub rolls with sprinkles of semolina on top.

Framilode Fri 16-Aug-19 16:36:03

Quite a few of the items in the M&S gluten free range are better that the mainstream ones, not just the fish fingers. The gluten free apple pie is delicious.

GillT57 Fri 16-Aug-19 16:21:38

Will give them a try although I really love the wheat free chicken goujons, nice crisp non soggy coating. I love a fish finger sandwich, soft white bap spread with tartare sauce

Esspee Fri 16-Aug-19 16:17:31

The Waitrose ones are 99p each. <just saying>

Minniemoo Fri 16-Aug-19 16:14:50

I think they're cod, paddyann. But I might be wrong.

You must let us know what you think, DanniRae! And if you fancy some baked beans with them try M&S's as well. So much nicer than Heinz. Even though they're all made in the same place the M&S ones clearly have something different going on! Not too much juice.

And their tuna in spring water! Once you have theirs you'll not be wanting any other types.

DanniRae Fri 16-Aug-19 16:10:45

I LOVE M&S food and will definitely try these fish fingers but probably with chips and frozen peas or tinned sweet corn......and ketchup of course grin

paddyann Fri 16-Aug-19 12:47:04

I have never had a fish finger sandwich and until quite recently hadn't bought ready made fish fingers.I dont like cod ,so I made home made haddock ones for my kids and GC.My daughter told me Birdseye make haddock ones so I got them for my GD just a few months ago and they went down well so I keep a pack for her in the freezer.Do M &S do Haddock ones?

GrannyGravy13 Fri 16-Aug-19 10:36:46

My guilty food pleasure is a fish finger sandwich, will try these when I am in M & S next week.

(The little shop is mainly cardboard/paper my GC love it)

EllanVannin Fri 16-Aug-19 10:32:52

It's ages since I bought fish fingers but now realise that a fish finger sandwich can be quite tasty. I'll look out for them when I'm in M&S again.
I don't think their food is any more expensive than anywhere else to be honest and one thing for sure, there's far less waste as the quality is better so therefore more enjoyable.

Minniemoo Fri 16-Aug-19 10:23:26

I shall try them Gabriella!

As for the toys they're giving away. I love them. Many of the items are cardboard. They will certainly not be played with once either as I don't intend to allow my grandchildren anywhere near them.

humptydumpty Fri 16-Aug-19 10:17:36

This is great news as DD is currently being tested for coeliac disease and if positive will have to go GF - so good to know there are delicious ff out there that are GF! Thanks for the post!!

KatyK Fri 16-Aug-19 10:06:32

I haven't tried the M&S ones but I will now. Thanks.

Lessismore Fri 16-Aug-19 09:32:29

Plastic food?

kittylester Fri 16-Aug-19 09:30:03
