Fish fingers

I was in M&S on Tues and bought their own make of 'Wheat free' fish fingers. A box of 9 is £3.
I've had them once before and, although not allergic to gluten, these are far and away the best I've ever tasted and came top in a recent blind tasting from all brands sold in major supermarkets.
Meaty cuts of cod (not bits stuck together) in a very crisp coating.
I also bought a pack of mini-submarine rolls £1.50 for 6, which have a semolina crust...very nice.
Instead of putting the oven on I cooked 3 pin a ceramic pan which I wiped with a smear of oil.
One fits into a sub roll exactly and I had 3, smeared with butter and a dollop of good old Heinz ketchup plus.a small bowl of coleslaw on the side.
It might be a nice cheap but nutritious tea/supper for children with a few oven fries and tub of mushy peas.
A change from sausages, burgers or nuggets which often have nitrates and nitrites added.
Waitrose chunky fingers are nowhere near as nice and they're floppy.
Has anyone tried the M&S version?

You learn something every day.

I didn't even know fish had fingers.

You lot in the Northern Hemisphere get all sort of goodies.
We down here, at the end of the world, are deprived.

Ooh I feel an M&S shopping spree coming on!

Tough for me too annepl! I went looking for the gluten free fish fingers in my local M&S but was in a hurry........couldn't see them so bought 3 gluten free boxes of chicken fillets (3 for £10).......and had 1 box for dinner that night (with new potatoes and carrot and pea medley........ooh posh........ but just when carrots are nearly ready add some frozen peas) The chicken was delicious and the coating too. Even Mr R ate it but didn't tell him gluten free until after. grin

Life is so tough sometimes BlueSapphire ?

Well, am so disappointed. No fish fingers at all in my M&S food shop as the freezer was broken - and I had made a special journey!

BlueSapphire Fri 23-Aug-19 08:52:36

I shall make sure I get some of those M&S fish fingers and mini rolls today (I like the wholemeal ones). Are they in the chilled or freezer section?

By the way, my DGDs absolutely adore the M&S Posh Puppies (mini hot dog sausages with a lovely smokey flavour) in those little white sub rolls.

Actually, thinking about it, I could be wrong, but I am sure the date on the tinned spuds was a "best before" date which is very different form a "use by" date.

gillybob Thu 22-Aug-19 09:55:38

I never worry about dates on tinned stuff but obviously there are many things I wouldn't eat even a day out of date.

Those little spuds were really lovely lightly fried/browned off and DH said he thoroughly enjoyed our "make do and mend" supper. He would have never eaten them had he known but what he doesn't know, he doesn't need to worry about wink

I never worry about dates. My DS, however, clears out my cupboards and fridge when he comes grin

DanniRae Thu 22-Aug-19 08:59:15

gillybob - Mr R would eat food totally out of date - and never suffers for it (so far!) It's me who never chances it. grin

annep1 Wed 21-Aug-19 23:21:00

Oh you are brave Gillybob. I would be like your husband. I put labels on everything in the fridge and food cupboards to remind me. Tins have use by dates on too.

gillybob Wed 21-Aug-19 22:40:37

Well tonight DH and I had ...... wait for it..... fish fingers, peas and tinned potatoes (lightly fried) for supper. Served with lashings of bread and butter and tomato ketchup . We both thoroughly enjoyed it .

I knew that tin of spuds would come in handy one day. ........ Shhhh don’t tell DH that they were 2 years out of date or he will pretend to feel ill tomorrow wink

You're welcome annep1 ?? ?
Glad the subs went down well SueDonim??

annep1 Wed 21-Aug-19 20:47:10

Thanks GabriellaG54. I didn't know I could freeze vegetables without blanching.

SueDonim Wed 21-Aug-19 19:34:19

Fishfingers in sub rolls consumed. They went down a treat! Thanks for the idea, GabriellaG54

luck lucky

GabriellaG54 Wed 21-Aug-19 19:05:10

Yes annep1 just chop and freeze.
I'm luck to be able to shop every day if I wanted to as all major supermarkets are within easy reach as are daily street markets and greengrocers etc but there are times when I've bought more fresh veg than I can use on the day so I chop n freeze in sealable bags (air squashed out) or small tubs.
Bought 3 large punnets of raspberries at £3 each in Tesco, froze them on flat sheets so they were separated then tipped into plastic tub with airtight lid. I'll use over Christmas and cheaper than buying ready frozen which are pricier and smaller.

I love a fish finger roll.
Even after being presented with two cold ones in the middle of a large plate, for breakfast, after the birth if DS2.

SueDonim Wed 21-Aug-19 17:49:23

Maybe they were more than three days old, Lessismore! grin

Lessismore Wed 21-Aug-19 17:32:17

How could fish fingers offend?

Sussexborn Wed 21-Aug-19 13:01:45

A rather random post above this but reminded me of one of the meals in hospital. Fish fingers smothered in gravy! Definitely not a recommendation!

My M&S fish fingers and mini-submarine rolls are ready to go! Is it tea time yet? grin

PamelaJ1 Sun 18-Aug-19 15:32:09

Lisagran, yes I did mean the toys that they are giving away!
Sorry I’ve been away or I’d have answered a little sooner.
I refused mine.
