Have made too much , just wondering. Can you freeze cheese sauce,

cavewoman Tue 10-Sep-19 15:37:57

Yes,I do. If it separates give it a good whisk.

Nonnie Tue 10-Sep-19 15:38:48

Never tried but if you have no other use for it give it a go. You can come back and tell us if it worked.

I've now got an oddments drawer in the freezer and when it has enough in it I'm planning to throw it in a pot and make soup. Don't think I'd add cheese sauce though grin

I've frozen it as part of other dishes eg lasagne, and it's been fine. I assume it's made with white sauce with cheese melted into it.

M0nica Tue 10-Sep-19 16:07:13

Yes, I will always put anything in the freezer. The worst that can happen is that it is revolting when it comes out, in which case I do not freeze it again.

I batch cook cheese sauce then freeze it. Always got sauce for cauliflower or pasta.

Bathsheba Tue 10-Sep-19 16:26:52

Yes I've frozen cheese sauce a number of times - usually when I've made too much by mistake! It's fine when it defrosts.

I buy Sainsbury's cheese sauce as it is GF. It is often on offer so I buy a lot a freeze it till I need it.

If it separates on thawing out, I would add a teaspoon of so of cornflour to water and whisk it in.

Fennel Tue 10-Sep-19 16:43:31

Remember to put a label on it before freezing. I've got so many mystery objects in my freezer.

hulahoop Tue 10-Sep-19 17:13:10

Thanks for replies and tips everyone I have labelled it fennel .i will let you know how it turns out although could be a while before I use it ?

Sussexborn Tue 10-Sep-19 17:18:58

Label it carefully! The cook in a children’s home I worked in added cheese sauce to a rice pudding.

M0nica Tue 10-Sep-19 17:35:06

I went down the self service line at my Hall of Residence once and put cheese sauce on my rhubarb crumble instead of custard.grin

annodomini Tue 10-Sep-19 18:27:39

I had some cheese sauce left over from my cauliflower cheese last night. I used it at lunchtime today to make Welsh Rarebit.

EllanVannin Tue 10-Sep-19 18:31:14

I've done that before now annodomini and added extra cheese and Worcestershire sauce.

Calendargirl Tue 10-Sep-19 19:22:09

We never have any left over to freeze, my DH loves cheese sauce and always polishes it off.

BradfordLass72 Tue 10-Sep-19 21:25:33

Nonnie I've often added cheese and white sauce to soups and it's delicious.
It is, after all, only flour, butter and milk, all of which go well in soups. As the cheese has melted into the sauce mixture, it doesn't separate but gives the soup a creamy taste.

Nonnie Wed 11-Sep-19 10:07:36

Thanks Bradford I will remember that if we ever have any left over. I'm enjoying putting little bits of this and that in the drawer ready for soup, it makes me feel very environmental and thrifty grin

Greyduster Wed 11-Sep-19 10:57:01

I have frozen it before and it’s been fine. As cavewoman says, just give it a good whisk when thawed. I have also frozen left over cauliflower cheese and that’s been fine too.

Gonegirl Wed 11-Sep-19 11:26:26

I love a thick cheese sauce on toast with a bit of bacon on the side.

Gonegirl Wed 11-Sep-19 11:27:48

That is similar to what others have said.

Witzend Wed 11-Sep-19 20:46:51

Leftover cheese sauce would go brilliantly in e.g. a leek and potato soup.
Unfortunately we never have any left over.

Tesco sells frozen cheese sauce. Very handy on occasion!
