We have a bumper crop of apples again this year - our trees really need a good pruning, but I just go out every day and collect the windfalls. The blackberries on the hedges near me are also very good. Freezer (big chest one) is pretty full of fruit from earlier in summer, so I'll have to get going on jam making soon.

Last year was a 'good' apple year so I bought an apple press. We tried various methods of preparing the apples - chopping by hand, freezing and thawing, chopping in the food processor. Now I can't remember which method worked best! Not such a good crop this year, so it might just be bramble and apple jam.

Lots of crab apples, though, so crab apple jelly might be on the cards.

we made apple wine last year ,coming up to its first birthday so I must remember to check it .Our bramble wine is lovely ,we have 48 bottles of that to add to the 5gallons of fortified wine also bramble made in 1988.Also tastes great like a Madeira but I'm going to have to leave it on doorsteps to get rid of some.Have you made Apple jelly? I make an apple and parsley jelly with juice thats lovely with cold meats or you could make apple and mint .My Apple tree didn't give much fruit this year,I need to find out why so it fruits well next year

Some years ago when I realised we were going to have a glut of apples, I invested in a juice press. The apples had to be crushed beforehand and with the press I bought an attachment for an electric drill that went into a bucket and worked like a giant liquidiser. It worked OK, and we made quite a lot of juice and cider over the years, but it was always a rather time consuming and messy process, preparing apples and cleaning up after.
A few weeks ago, someone mentioned they had seen a handy way of extracting apple juice on YouTube - video.cookist.com/video/an/WhP2zuSwNYC8qdHZ
The method shows just squeezing with hands, but I decided to try putting apples in the freezer, thawing, and then using my press. It has worked amazingly well - there seems to be a higher yield of very clear juice and no mess!
Sometimes I combine other fruit with the apples - only problem is what to do with all the juice! Some will be turned into cider, some frozen and more given away - anyone for juice?
