New (at least to me) combination foods

A few years ago I discovered (and thought I had invented) Coconut Cocoa.
That's the old bedtime favourite but with coconut milk or cream powder mixed in, rather than cow's milk.

For those in UK, Tesco sell sachets of cc powder and Maggi do it too, in case you feel like trying it. It's a lovely winter drink, especially with a splash of booze.

But this week I discovered another unusual combination.

At first I thought, 'Oh, no, yuk.' But I was at a friend's house and didn't want to appear rude so tried it - and it was delicious.
Not something I would ever have thought of doing for myself. But now I shall.

It was a bowl of winter salad (raw cabbage, red and white, grated carrot, beetroot, slivered Lebanese cucumber, finely chopped Spring onions) with a little dressing - and potato crisps crumbled on top!

Maybe it's a staple everywhere and I've been living in the dark but I've never come across it before. It really was delicious.

I sometimes make a grated carrot and beetroot mix, add a little oil and crushed garlic (it's best left in the fridge for a day to 'settle') and have that with cottage or other cheese - now I'm going to see if a bit of crumbled crisps goes with that too. I may try Green Onion flavour smile

What unusual food combos have you invented or come across?

My childhood best friend introduced me to grated chocolate sandwiches!
My own kids loved peanut butter and jam sandwiches.

I like pineapple and cheese on toast.

My friend has red onion and sardine omelette.

OmaforMaya or cream cheese with sweet chilli sauce?

silversand12 I have a friend who always sprikles Horlicks on her porridge.

Daisyboots Oh rats! I thought I'd invented that smile

I make my garlic and herb cream cheese from drained yohgurt (home-made).

Pop yog into sieve over bowl, cover and leave in fridge overnight. Next day, stir in garlic, herbs, spices, chopped nuts, whatever is your delight.

My 2nd son is autistic & has never spoken. He usually lets you know what he wants by taking you to it. I was bit perplexed when he took me to apple strudel and spaghetti hoops, but cooked them anyway and... he ate them both together with relish! confused

it was interesting to read, thanks for info. I'll try.

Porridge with cheese mixed through!

I would never have thought of crisps on that sort of salad, but it doesn't surprise me - crushed up like that they're a surprisingly successful addition to lots of things. They work really well as a topping on something like a pasta bake as well (or probably anything savoury you might put breadcrumbs on)

Toast with Philly cheese and chopped dates. Delicious smile

Spread garlic and herb cream cheese over a plain pizza base, add sliced mushrooms then sprinkle grated mozzarella cheese or cheddar over the top. Bake in the oven for 10 minutes. Makes a lovely change to the usual tomato based pizzas

Fennel Yorkshire favourites.

I was brought up on apple pie with cheese and the Yorkshire pudding with Lyle's Golden Syrup ("Out of the strong came forth sweetness" - poor lion)

My Dad always had Christmas cake with apple and cheese. I love the last two but will pass on the cake.

travelsafar I think your friend may have known some Kurdish people in Turkey.

The typical Kurdish breakfast is walnuts and/or dates, wrapped in strips of Naan bread. This is accompanied by a slightly fermented yoghurt drink.

Just yesterday i spent the day with my bestest friend and she has just returned from being in Turkey for 6 weeks. She had bought back walnuts, olives, dried figs and peanuts covered in what we think was honey then rolled in sesaeme seeds. She showed me how the locals split the figs almost through then they put half a walnut in each section, close together and eat, it is a lovely combo with various textures and extremely moreish!!!! I said if i went there i dread to think how much weight i would put on as all these foods though natural and healthy are very high in calories!!!! smile

Grated apple mixed with a teaspoonful of mint sauce. Eat with cold meat or cheese. Delicious.

BradfordLass, you are right about the banana, it's used to sweeten the pudding/mousse! No sugar is used-

crazyH Wed 16-Oct-19 22:11:05

Banana, grated cheese and a sprinkling of sugar on toast (grill not toaster)

BlueBelle Wed 16-Oct-19 22:03:29

I like bovril or marmite on fruit cake

Neilspurgeon0 Wed 16-Oct-19 21:06:04

Saxon17 Wed 16-Oct-19 20:33:08

Cox’s apples & liquorice!

Oopsminty Wed 16-Oct-19 20:04:07

Don't know if this has been mentioned, but banana and grated milk chocolate sandwiches. Delicious.

And chips and mayonnaise but I think that's quite common these days. I first had it about 40 years ago in Spain. Thought I'd died and gone to heaven

Shizam Wed 16-Oct-19 20:02:00

Had fruit cake topped with slivers of cheddar cheese at pre wedding thing. Thought are they mad? But it was delicious. Especially with champagne!

Willow500 Wed 16-Oct-19 18:17:48

Oh yes my MIL served apple pie and cheese and we always had Yorkshire pudding with golden syrup when I was a child!

Fennel Wed 16-Oct-19 18:12:03

My Yorkshire Gran used to serve apple pie with slices of cheese.
Another of her desserts was Yorkshire puddings with golden syrup.
We called them "wait and see" puddings because when we asked "what's for pudding" she said "Wait and see".

I had a banana and bacon sandwich for breakfast in NZ a few years ago - I thought it was delicious.

My mum often did baked fish with crushed cornflakes sprinkled on the top of it and also what she called a wet salad (cucumber, tomato and mint in vinegar with a teaspoon of sugar) served with roast beef Sunday lunch. Christmas cake was always served with a slice of cheese.

clareken Wed 16-Oct-19 17:57:03

agnurse I have something similar occasionally. Peanut butter on one slice, cream cheese on the other, and ham in the middle.

Want2Help Wed 16-Oct-19 17:51:17

I make banana and cheese on toast. Slice the bananas and melt cheese on top - its absolutely delicious!!!

BlueBelle Wed 16-Oct-19 17:46:00

Cheese and jam for me too especially strawberry or raspberry Love ice cream sandwiches
As a kid I used to have pepper and salt sandwiches and dripping on toast
Always a little sugar on salad

dogsmother Wed 16-Oct-19 17:43:55

Ham and banana toasties.
I think I invented them but sound similar to South African bacon and banana I’m reading above so maybe I’d heard of something similar and just adapted to suit myself.
They are really delicious.....

When I was in Mexico I had cauliflower with chocolate sauce, it was very nice.
