The last Sunday roast until Christmas dinner!

For the next few weeks it will be casseroles, hotpots etc.

I may relent at times, and do some roast potatoes to go with the casseroles (casserole & mash can feel like food you don't need teeth to eat!) or perhaps the odd potatoes boulangerie (sp?) but no more roasts grin

Namsnanny Sat 23-Nov-19 18:41:56

Why's that then?

To have a cooking rest before the big day?

Baggs Sat 23-Nov-19 18:46:47

I'm wondering why too.

seacliff Sat 23-Nov-19 18:51:24

I'm guessing...so you really enjoy your roast at Christmas after a few weeks break?

Bit like when I really savour chocolate after being on a diet for a week!!

phoenix Sat 23-Nov-19 18:54:41

Yes, make the Christmas meal a touch more "special" and something to really look forward to!

Have been doing this for a few years now.

M0nica Sat 23-Nov-19 19:04:28

I rarely cook roasts. I prefer casseroles and stews and make these all the time. Sunday I may jazz it up and use venison, salmon, pheasant or similar, but casseroles and stews rule the roost in this household.

I don't do a roast dinner very often these days, I used to love roast beef or lamb but it's so expensive these days.

Not going to be doing much at christmas this year as there will be just the two of us. Will get a small turkey to keep OH happy, wouldn't bother myself as not keen on it.

phoenix Sat 23-Nov-19 19:28:01

Just me and Mr P here too jusnoneed as always, but we do like to make it a bit special.

Will either do scrambled eggs and smoked salmon for brunch ( we eat main meal around 5.30 ish) or Delias smoked fish creams!

Turkey is such good value, and so much you can do with it, (without resorting to the dreaded turkey curry!) Mr P is very keen on my (cheats) turkey and ham pie wink

seacliff Sat 23-Nov-19 19:32:41

Good idea. I love an occasional roast, although I'm veggie. I love a cauliflower and broccoli bake with tasty cheese sauce, stuffing balls, Yorkshires and lots of roast veggies.

Baggs Sat 23-Nov-19 19:34:49

OK, I get that, phoen. We hardly ever have roasts and, except that it won't be turkey, I haven't decided what we're having on Christmas Day — chicken, lamb, macaroni cheese (I make an awesome macaroni cheese).

Amagran Sat 23-Nov-19 19:35:50

When I saw the thread title, Phoenix, I thought you'd forgotten what day of the week it was. I was going to help you out.....grin

Ellianne Sat 23-Nov-19 19:38:18

Same here, we will have shepherds' pie and casseroles on the Sundays before Christmas then the full works on Christmas Day. I'm not sure what we will do on the Sunday immediately after Christmas though.

merlotgran Sat 23-Nov-19 19:52:11

We often have pork chops or chicken thighs instead of a joint but still do roast potatoes and tons of veg to give it that Sunday feeling.

Any leftover veg goes into Monday's lunchtime soup.

Gonegirl Sat 23-Nov-19 20:05:29

We're having roast chicken. Not Xmas for a long time.

BlueBelle Sat 23-Nov-19 20:09:01

I haven’t had a roast dinner for literally years my Sunday dinners are no different to every other day

Gonegirl Sat 23-Nov-19 20:10:10

That's just sad. Not sarcastic sad. Sad. sad

grapefruitpip Sat 23-Nov-19 20:16:36

Sometimes I have crackers and cheese for Sunday dinner. Sometimes I have a roast.

merlotgran Sat 23-Nov-19 20:18:28

Sunday wouldn't be Sunday without a roast. We have new potatoes in the summer instead of roast potatoes though.

Gonegirl Sat 23-Nov-19 20:18:51

Ooh I could just eat crackers and cheese now.

Gonegirl Sat 23-Nov-19 20:19:37

Sometimes I roast the new potatos. #anythingyoucando....

M0nica Sat 23-Nov-19 20:21:48

BlueBelle I hope that is by choice.

Roast potatoes do not have to be eaten with a roast, I do them with all sorts of main courses.

Callistemon Sat 23-Nov-19 20:21:54

I do that too sometimes phoenix!

It makes Christmas dinner seem more special somehow.

However, I haven't had any sprouts yet grin

Callistemon Sat 23-Nov-19 20:23:41

It has to be a Proper Turkey though, to make Christmas dinner special.

Grannybags Sat 23-Nov-19 21:01:26

I only do a roast on Easter Sunday and Boxing Day when all the family are here. Other than that Sunday dinners are the same as every other meal of the week like Bluebell

I don't really enjoy them that much

BlueSapphire Sat 23-Nov-19 21:37:47

Well, I shall be having either lamb or pork chops with roast potatoes tomorrow, because I really like them and I am not going to give them up for Advent, like giving up stuff for Lent.
