I always serve homemade bread sauce with Turkey.

I’ve had guests that have never heard of it or never tried it.
Is it a “ northern” thing?

tanith Mon 16-Dec-19 07:49:04

We’ve never had it on the table ever I’m in the south.

travelsafar Mon 16-Dec-19 07:49:40

Yes the only time we have it.

Always have bread sauce with chicken or turkey ( or in my case anything else I fancy it with nut roast, vegan burgers whatever) my grandkids love my bread sauce not many things I can cook and get applauded for ?

My daughter always does home made bread sauce and cranberry sauce on Christmas Day and we are in the south. Love it!

We are having goose this year rather than turkey

dragonfly46 Mon 16-Dec-19 07:55:31

We always have bread sauce.

Its a traditional accompaniment to roast chicken or turkey I, don't think its a northern thing. My family love it and will squabble if they think someone has taken too much. And there always needs to be some left for Boxing Day.

Of course you serve bread sauce with turkey (or chicken)

I think it used to be common enough in Ireland. My mother used to make it and always expected it when she had Christmas with us. I just used to buy a packet as rest of family didn’t see the point of it!

No bread sauce here. My mother never made it nor my mother in law so neither of us grew up with it. I don’t think I’ve ever tried it. Maybe I should tchsmile

My husband loves it and always serves it with Christmas lunch. I dislike it.

Teetime Mon 16-Dec-19 08:59:18

I'm from London and never had bread sauce - tried it once - vile!!!

annsixty Mon 16-Dec-19 09:02:03

I also use readymade as I am the only one who likes it.
Only ever on Christmas day.

M0nica Mon 16-Dec-19 09:05:09

Never had it, no idea on how to make it. Completely unknown in both mine and DH's family.

My DD makes ours. Delicious. Love the clove taste.

DanniRae Mon 16-Dec-19 10:14:07

We never have it and I have never tried it.

GrandmaMoira Mon 16-Dec-19 11:07:51

We always have bread sauce and all the family like it. Whenever anyone else is here for Christmas (such as sons' girlfriends) they've always never had it or don't like it. I've never seen it on Christmas menus in restaurants.

I made 4 pints of milk's worth of bread sauce the other day and froze it. We like it - well, they like it but I buy a gf mix for ne - which isnt quite the same thing at all.sad

Fennel Mon 16-Dec-19 11:57:50

We always had it (in the NE)
You peel an onion, cut it in half, pierce with a few cloves and stew gently in milk.
Then use the flavoured milk to soak some finely chopped white breadcrumbs. Plus s&p, and some of the copped cooked onion, if you like. No cloves!

shysal Mon 16-Dec-19 12:13:51

I usually serve bread sauce with poultry, sometimes instead of gravy. I use up stale bread by blitzing it and adding some softened chopped onion, then freeze in portions to be mixed with milk and seasoned when required.

A few years ago I joined friends for a carvery meal before Christmas. I was pleased to see a dish of bread sauce which I spooned over my whole plate, only to discover on eating that it was horseradish, which I hate!

CraftyGranny Mon 16-Dec-19 12:25:27

shysal

oops!

CraftyGranny Mon 16-Dec-19 12:26:40

I've never tried it either. I may make some this Christmas and see how it goes down.

Hetty58 Mon 16-Dec-19 15:00:24

My mother (from London) used to insist on it. I'd cook some for her but nobody else ever wanted any. She insisted on home made cranberry sauce too!
