Boiled eggs. Keeping a special pan.

Just curious. My DM always insisted on having a dedicated pan for boiling eggs and would never use it for anything else. The water used for boiling would be thrown away. She would never boil vegetables in it for example. She was born in 1915. Was this typical? Was it because of the sulphur from the eggs discolouring the pan? Or was it to do with the toxic metal in saucepans in those days, leeching out into the water?

I haven't heard this advice since but although I wouldn't cook anything with boiling eggs in the same water, I would use the pan for other things. My pots and pans are stainless steel.

I must admit I keep a small cheap pan just for boiling eggs. I've had it for years and it looks rather manky. It is difficult to clean so it's exclusively used for eggs. It's bog standard stainless steel and hasn't aged well.

My mother had an, "Egg pan". She never used the water to cook anything else. She believed it would give warts to anyone who ate the food.

She also held that it was a tradition where she came from (Glossop) never to clean an egg pan. Over the years it became caked with scale. A horrible sight.

I think my egg saucepan might be specially designed for boiling eggs. It's small but deep with a lid. I use it for boiling dishcloths as well. And sometimes, flannels.

Oh yes. Mine's quite scaley. I add the water to any washing up water that might be on the go.

I so love boiled eggs.

My Mum had a special egg pan and I do too merely because of the white discolouration which boiled eggs produce. I wouldn’t want to use my better pans for this purpose!

Interesting. I did wonder if it was anything to do with the eggs being porous and they absorbing alien things whilst cooking?
I will have asked her at the time but I don't think she knew. She just did it.

Makes sense Marmight. Nothing as sinister as cross contamination.
We have soft water here in Scotland so don't get limescale but I have seen furry kettles.
We get rotten teeth though because of the soft water.

I use the bottom half of my double saucepan. It's not as wide as a saucepan and a little bit deeper.

We have always had a small saucepan reserved for boiling eggs , have been married for 35 years. This year the egg pan developed a hole and was thrown away, I could not think of a logical reason to replace it. I can only assume that because my mother had an egg pan I decided to have one too.

My mum had a double saucepan merlot. Top was porridge, bottom eggs. I think.
Can you still find them?

I think those double saucepans are sometimes called "porringers".

Thank you lucywinter I never knew that. There are plenty to choose from I see. I may buy one. Useful for custard and melting chocolate etc. Infact anything you don't want to burn. Porridge for a start.

I don't remember any of my family having a special pan for boiling eggs. I certainly don't. These days I use an electric egg boiler instead. My DH bought it for me, and to begin with, I was rather suspicious of it. I would not boil eggs in a pan now. I get perfect results every time.

I only like hard boiled eggs and I cook a few with my potatoes. I have always understood the calcium from the eggs goes into the vegetable water to enrich your gravy as well as saving energy.

Yes, I have a separate pan for boiling eggs. As another poster said, my mum said touching egg water gave you warts!

I have an old glass saucepans that is used solely for eggs. Get's a build up of scale on it.

The eggs are bog-standard supermarket; not the good free-range sort. Never thought to wash them but they are in boiling water. Still alive after doing this trick for 30 years!
