What time dinner?

I like a late dinner. 8pm or a little later . ONE of the reasons I like to eat late is that I'm invariably home from work late. But another is that if I don't eat late, I eat dinner then pick at food later. Whereas with a late dinner, I'm not interested in food before bedtime.

BUT where I work now, I'm provided with (very good) lunch and dinner. And both are too early for me. Lunch at 12 and dinner at 6.

What is your preference?

I like to do all my eating within an 8 hour time slot. I therefore have a brunch at around 10am and dinner at 5pm.

I can't eat a main meal at lunch-time. If we go out for lunch I have a struggle to finish it.
Normally lunch about 1pm and dinner at about 7pm.

I did mean to have a larger meal at lunch-time today but DH was out because it's Shrove Tuesday!

Pancake batter already mixed and in the fridge.

main meal of the day seems to be called something different depending on which part of the UK you are from. Is it supper? Tea? or Dinner? It is dinner for me eaten around 5pm but I do get confused when people ask me for supper or tea as not quite sure what I am going to get!

We eat our main meal between 5 and 6 p.m. if at home and between 1.30 and 3 p.m. if eating out. Now finding that as we are older eating a big meal after 8 p.m. means we don’t sleep that well.

MamaCaz Tue 25-Feb-20 08:04:48

Lunch usually somewhere between 12 and 1pm, and tea usually somewhere between 6 and 7pm, but we are very flexible over those times, depending on what we are up to.

timetogo2016 Tue 25-Feb-20 07:59:13

I eat my dinner between 5 and 6pm.
Lunch around midday.

Nortsat46 Tue 25-Feb-20 07:56:05

We eat about 7.30 - 8.00pm, depending upon work and other commitments.
Lunch around 12.30 to 1.00pm.

We don’t eat breakfast (I know, I know ...) unless we are away. Then we usually can’t resist a big hotel breakfast on at least one of the mornings.

Dinner is usually around 7 pm. but it depends on what we have been doing in the day or are going to do in the evening. Nothing set in stone.

Eloethan Mon 24-Feb-20 23:59:20

We generally have our main meal at between 1 and and a sandwich or something on toast around 6 p.m. - unless we are either going out for a meal with friends or preparing a meal for them - but that is fairly rare.

When we were both working, dinner was at about 7 p.m.

tidyskatemum Mon 24-Feb-20 23:12:27

I don’t eat breakfast, a light lunch around 1pm, maybe a biccie or 2 with tea at 4ish, then dinner/tea/supper/whatever you like to call it about 7.30. I hate it when DH decides to cook as he doesn’t start until about 8pm and by the time the food turns up I’ve been ready to start chewing the wallpaper. I suspect it’s a plot to ensure I clear my plate.

We eat when we are hungry! Up at 6 and have breakfast so by 11.30 we are ready for lunch, at 4.30/5 we have dinner . This suits us very well and I don't eat after this except a piece of chocolate.

If we go out to lunch which is quite often then it will be 12 o'clock. Don't like going out in the evening.

It's good to be able to just eat when you are hungry rather than sticking to rigid mealtimes. No need for set times when retired.

It’s a very moveable feast here, depending on what we had/hadn’t at lunch time and when that was - its also very flexible. Left to himself my old boy could easily settle into a set routine which would drive me to distraction. It’s been my life’s work to encourage spontaneity!

We eat our main meal at some point between 12 and 2 if we’re at home. A light supper between 6 and 7 works for us. It’s Mr C’s birthday tomorrow, we’ll be out for lunch rather than a meal in the evening. Seems to suit our digestions.

Thank you Monica, food for thought.

M0nica Mon 24-Feb-20 21:08:54

Greymar I have never been a large breakfast eater, I have a couple of crispbread, but that is all and by 12.00 I am getting hungry, so eating at lunch time, usually 12.30 - 1.00 feels quite right. When I had my light meal at lunch time I found with having only a light breakfast, by mid-afternoon I was really flagging and hungry and tempted to snack. By having my main meal at lunch time that keeps me full until supper time, when I have a light meal.

And as others have said, eating a big meal in the evening, especially after 7.00pm, gives me indigestion. In fact even when we go out for a celebration meal, we prefer to go out at lunchtime rather than in the evening.

Sarahmob Mon 24-Feb-20 20:41:26

Lunch whenever dependent on what I’m doing (work, other commitments etc) evening meal 5.30 - 6.00ish for preference.

Greymar Mon 24-Feb-20 20:36:34

Monica, do you find yourself ready for fish or whatever at 12.30 ish? i would like to change but it seems very early.

TrendyNannie6 Mon 24-Feb-20 19:36:09

12 o’clock lunch 530 dinner

kathsue Mon 24-Feb-20 19:26:34

When my husband was alive we always had tea/dinner at 4.30 (carried on from when he was working) and a snack or sandwich before bed. Nowadays I can eat what I want, when I want grin. It's usually about 6 ish.

dahlia Mon 24-Feb-20 19:18:38

Like you, Daisymae, I don't plan the timing but inevitably dinner is served at 6 p.m. This follows years of full-time work and a husband in the building trade, who couldn't last any later having put in a hard physical day on the site. We both find eating any later than 7 p.m. gives us discomfort and often a sleepless night, though of course we do work around family and friends when they are visiting. Lunch is usually at 12.30, a very light snack.

Daisymae Mon 24-Feb-20 18:56:40

6:00 pm on the dot
I seem to have a body clock and it doesnt really matter when I start it, most of the time I can be setting it on the table at 6!

M0nica Mon 24-Feb-20 18:25:06

Since we retired we have moved our main meal to lunch time and have a light meal about 6.00pm.

I think eating in the evening is more a matter of habit than hunger. I grew up not eating between meals, so I don't. I won't say never, but very rarely. Get yourself out of the habit of eating in the evening and it will soon not occur to you to do so.

sodapop Sun 23-Feb-20 20:09:22

No later than 7pm as otherwise I get heartburn. Things that plague us as we get older, I never used to have this problem.

JuliaM Sun 23-Feb-20 20:07:01

Normally we eat Lunch between 12noon and 1pm, and Dinner between 5pm and 6pm, but we tend to be a bit flexible depending on where and when we are going out during the day.
