Very puzzled re differences with Cottage Pie v Shepherds Pie.

A friends child was an angel in a nativity. They have called Shepherds pie Angel's pie ever since!

I've learnt something here. I always thought that the difference was Shepherd's Pie was made with fresh meat, and Cottage pie was made with pre-cooked meat.

One's made with real Shepherds-----but don't mention the Spotted Dick.

I do know the difference but call them all shepherd's pie.

I put red wine and redcurrant jelly in my beef Shepherd's pie.

My DD , now 54, still calls them Shepherds Cottages. ?

When our daughter was small, her friend came to supper, before ballet.
We had shepherds pie, with baked beans in it.
Little friend said to DD, I see your mum ekes it out like my mum!

It seems a bit weird to call it Shepherdess. She does the same things a shepherd does?

Shepherdess Pie is a vegetarian version made with soya mince and vegetables in veggie gravy with a mashed potato top, also very lovely.

So, it all seems to hinge on the choice of meat. Thanks to everyone. I'm a bit wiser now!

That's that sorted then. My friend puts baked beans in her cottage pie and they eat it with tomato sauce. That's a definite no no for us, we have carrots and onions in ours with lashings of gravy.

I've never used minced pork. I always use beef. Cottage pie is a family favourite.

If Shepherd's Pie is made with lamb mince and Cottage Pie with beef mince, what is the same dish made with pork mince called?

One is made with lamb, one with beef; I think Shepherds' pie is made with lamb, but someone will be along soon to correct me.
Or one has a layer of carrots between the meat and another tomatoes, or swede or another vegetable.
Whatever you call your pie you can guarantee that someone will tell you, very forcibly, that you have given it the wrong name.

And you can add Worcester sauce to both if you like.

Shepherds look after sheep/lambs so it has to be lamb mince for Shepherds Pie and beef mince for Cottage Pie.

Well, Margs should be clear about the difference now!
