Well, IS there a significant difference between the two dishes? I assumed that it was because one had Worcestershire Sauce as an ingredient and the other didn't.

Otherwise it looks like a simple case of "Same Difference."

As I understand it, shepherds pie is made with minced lamb, (hence the shepherd) and cottage pie with minced beef.

tanith Wed 18-Mar-20 11:32:33

One is lamb mince hence Shepards pie, Cottage pie is beef mince at least it is in our family.

SiobhanSharpe Wed 18-Mar-20 11:32:37

Er, no -- shepherd's pie should be made with minced lamb, cottage pie with beef.

Missfoodlove Wed 18-Mar-20 11:32:56

Shepherds pie is made with minced lamb.
Cottage pie is minced beef and often diced vegetables
A proper shepherds pie is a delight.

tanith Wed 18-Mar-20 11:33:08

Snap MiniMoon?

SiobhanSharpe Wed 18-Mar-20 11:33:32

Well, Margs should be clear about the difference now!

Pantglas2 Wed 18-Mar-20 11:33:33

Shepherds look after sheep/lambs so it has to be lamb mince for Shepherds Pie and beef mince for Cottage Pie.

SiobhanSharpe Wed 18-Mar-20 11:34:37

And you can add Worcester sauce to both if you like.

eazybee Wed 18-Mar-20 11:37:31

One is made with lamb, one with beef; I think Shepherds' pie is made with lamb, but someone will be along soon to correct me.
Or one has a layer of carrots between the meat and another tomatoes, or swede or another vegetable.
Whatever you call your pie you can guarantee that someone will tell you, very forcibly, that you have given it the wrong name.

If Shepherd's Pie is made with lamb mince and Cottage Pie with beef mince, what is the same dish made with pork mince called?

Beechnut Wed 18-Mar-20 12:00:43

Pig sty pie ?

ninathenana Wed 18-Mar-20 12:03:00

Have you got that Margs ??

ninathenana Wed 18-Mar-20 12:06:03

Beechnut grin

I've never used minced pork. I always use beef. Cottage pie is a family favourite.

Callistemon Wed 18-Mar-20 12:09:36

Shepherd's pie is made by Shepherds

What about Cumberland pie?
That is made from lamb or beef

Lucca Wed 18-Mar-20 12:11:48

ninathenana ....good post...amazing how many people say the same thing....don’t they read the thread ??

sodapop Wed 18-Mar-20 12:14:10

That's that sorted then. My friend puts baked beans in her cottage pie and they eat it with tomato sauce. That's a definite no no for us, we have carrots and onions in ours with lashings of gravy.

BBbevan Wed 18-Mar-20 12:32:50

We have a mashed cauliflower top. Lovely and low carb

Margs Fri 20-Mar-20 11:27:51

So, it all seems to hinge on the choice of meat. Thanks to everyone. I'm a bit wiser now!

Desdemona Fri 20-Mar-20 11:50:11

Shepherdess Pie is a vegetarian version made with soya mince and vegetables in veggie gravy with a mashed potato top, also very lovely. smile

Eglantine21 Fri 20-Mar-20 11:53:32

It seems a bit weird to call it Shepherdess. She does the same things a shepherd does?

Just saying.

There has to be a better name than that?

Auntieflo Fri 20-Mar-20 15:25:26

When our daughter was small, her friend came to supper, before ballet.
We had shepherds pie, with baked beans in it.
Little friend said to DD, I see your mum ekes it out like my mum!

crazyH Fri 20-Mar-20 15:29:45

Love that Auntieflo ?

BBbevan Fri 20-Mar-20 15:40:41

My DD , now 54, still calls them Shepherds Cottages. ?

kittylester Fri 20-Mar-20 17:02:46

I do know the difference but call them all shepherd's pie. confused

I put red wine and redcurrant jelly in my beef Shepherd's pie.
