Prince Charles

Many years ago I read somewhere or other Prince Charles eschews butter and requested an olive oil drizzler beside his place at table. Since then I have been impressed by this behaviour and I eventually bought an olive oil drizzler off Amazon and stopped buying butter.

I have however felt envious of Prince Charles as I imagined he would send his chef for the best oill drizzler in the world whereas the Amazon selection is uninspired.

I bought an oil drizzler in France years ago which I use to drizzle garlic infused olive oil. I love garlic and use the oil through pasta and added parmesan also through a green salad.

President butter is the only one I use.

Whitewavemark, please name the make and supplier of your oil drizzler which looks as if it is easy to charge, pours daintily, and looks as if it is not easily knocked over.

The best chicken and chips I ever had was in Spain----drenched in olive oil. Fabulous.
I used to pour it over salads and also crispy bread as it soaked in.

I’ve not had butter for over a year and tend to eat less bread now but I do use a vegan spread made by Naturali it’s really nice and I couldn’t eat butter again it’s so greasy.

Here is mine. The little one on the right?

I gave up butter years ago and lost the taste for it. Having read this thread I now feel the need for an olive oil drizzler!

I think the trick with tomatoes is not to store them in the fridge.

Jane10 Mon 04-May-20 13:55:55

I agree. There are lovely tasty tomatoes available. I'm happy to pay a bit more for flavourful ones. The cheap supermarket ones are tasteless and watery.

There are plenty of tasty British tomatoes, and different varieties, even in the supermarkets these days. You just have to choose carefully and pay a bit more for them. They’re still not as good as the ones DH grows, in season of course.

I like olive oil with crusty bread and olives, but you can’t beat real butter on toast or in a sandwich.

I will give most things up for health reasons but not butter. I too discovered Calon Wen it is delicious.

callistemon. ? yes! Milkman delivers.

Gaunt you need to buy Scotch tomatoes ,they are the best you can get ,Much tastier then anything fron Europe or beyond . There used to be miles of greenhouses growing tomatoes and soft fruits all across central Scotland .Sadly the market was decimated when cheap imports flooded in during the 70's but there are still farms prodcuing them for local markets and beyond..I can even buy them in Morrisons

I thought olive oil was better for one's cholesterol level. No? Not that it will stop me using butter.

Strange that some think there is no such thing as healthy food. There have been many threads on healthy diets.

Callistemon Mon 04-May-20 10:01:33

Now I'm wondering which farm, Whitewave!
Would it be Netherend?

Susan56 Mon 04-May-20 09:59:36

I love welsh butter.Colliers and Dragon are my favourites. Will have to give the Calon Wen a try.

Jane10 Mon 04-May-20 09:07:10

I just plain prefer butter. I don't like it thickly spread. I've never understood why anyone would put olive oil on bread. All down to personal preference of course. Lurpak, President butter. Yes please!

Alexa Mon 04-May-20 09:00:22

True, butter is delicious. I decided to reduce my consumption of dairy as I am so sorry for dairy cows.

I bought an olive oil drizzle (didn’t know it was called that until now) years ago in Italy. It sits by my hob and is one of most useful things I have bought. It is a nice shape and matches an Italian kettle I bought years later.

Horses for courses surely? Butter where necessary like a base for some soups and of course cakes etc. But oil for sauté, salads etc. It’s all about giving your food the best flavour.
I use different olive oils for different dishes, saving the best for salads and so on, and an every day olive oil for cooking etc where I can get away with it.
My butter comes from an organic farm in the Wye valley.

I gave up butter for a few years on the advice of my boss who owned a health food shop.

Now, having got to 73, I can see no point whatsoever in denying myself.

'Healthy' is an abstract concept and depends on so many things, not least ones genetic makeup.

There is no such thing as 'healthy food' - but if you think your life is going to last longer if you cut out butter, then fine.

I just cannot imagine making Scottish Shortbread with olive oil.

Callistemon Sun 03-May-20 20:32:11

I like Calon Wen butter as well, Anniebach

However, I do like a drizzle of olive oil on salad but usually drizzle it from the bottle blush

Gaunt47 Sun 03-May-20 19:57:03

Fram you're so lucky to live somewhere the tomatoes taste good. I can't imagine anything worse than a British supermarket tomato on toast grin

Framilode Sun 03-May-20 19:25:52

Toast, olive oil and a bit of salt with fresh tomato on top for breakfast, delicious. Tostado y tomate.

Anniebach Sun 03-May-20 17:04:44

Nothing could replace Calon Wen butter for me

SueDonim Sun 03-May-20 17:00:59

I’m not sure I fancy an olive oil & strawberry jam sandwich. grin
