Home made bread - how to store?

I bought myself a breadmaker as my birthday present to myself, and I've made the first loaf. It smells fab and I can't wait to try it.

But what do you store home-made bread in? I've just wrapped it in a clean tea towel at the moment, but I'm sure there's a better way smile

We bought a bread crock from Ar**s, and it works perfectly fine. Do ensure to clear out the inevitable crumbs that will you accumulate in the bottom though as I've spotted some going mouldy in the past. Wrapping in a clean tea towel is ideal though but never use a plastic bag, your lovely loaf will go mouldy very quickly.

I make two sourdough loaves each week - it is very moorish. I cover it with a t- towel as it comes out of the oven, otherwise it forms a hard crust, once cooled I wrap one in cling film and freeze it, the other I keep in the bread bin. It doesn’t last as long as shop bought because a) it isn’t full of preservatives and b) because it is so delicious!

I make a loaf and rolls. The rolls are put in a freezer bag and then frozen. The loaf is wrapped in a clean teatowel. They defrost easily in the microwave and taste like freshly baked.
I sourced fresh yeast at a village bakers. Try Tesco they stopped fresh yeast at lockdown but it may be available again now. Dried yeast is also available again in some supermarkets.

Whatever you do, don't wrap it in plastic and store in a metal bread bin !
I made the mistake of buying one because I like the look of it - after 2 days, this time of year, the bread goes mouldy!
I usually have bakery bread from the supermarket - I take it out of the plastic wrapping and put it in an old paper bag (from the bakery bit in Tescos) and put it in the fridge!

Surely the words "store" and "home made bread" do not go in the same sentence?!!

We’ve been making our own bread for quite a few years now since a programme with Shouty Wallace showed how many extras were added to mass produced bread.

Made a real difference to OH’s rhinitis. Usually a mix of whole meal and white flour. We keep it in the fridge especially in the summer.

Never used a breadmaker but do make a lot of bread. I bought a bread bag which is material with a plastic liner - I think it was from Lakeland.
It keeps the loaf fresh beautifully & wasn't expensive

I find Fermipan yeast, available on ebay, very good

Laurensnan Mon 13-Jul-20 10:08:56

That was meant to say yeast not great ?

I use a bread keeper bag, from Lakeland, to store the bread I make in my breadmaker. It has a cotton outer and a plastic bag type inner, with a drawstring cord. Lakeland do two sizes, but they have been out of stock. Had my bread keeper bag about 10 years and is still going strong. I shake the crumbs out when it is empty, and every now and then I put it in the washing machine on a 40 degree wash to freshen it up.

Ramblingrose22 I ordered some great on Amazon and it came the next day. In case you get desperate.

I’ve been making sourdough bread. I keep the starter in the fridge and get it out the night before I want to bake and ‘feed’ it. Like others, we slice the bread before freezing. It’s a good idea to cover hot loaves with a tea towel to stop the crust hardening

We love our bread maker. No; the bread doesn’t keep as long as shop bought but am glad ‘cos there’s none of those pesky preservatives. We just make more smaller loaves and the pigeons are always happy to get any ‘heels’ we throw their way !!

I've just got a new bread maker as our old one was making stone loaves - the birds couldn't lift off the ground after eating it grin. The new one makes lovely bread - I store it in a plastic food bag in the bread bin after it's cooled down and I reuse the bags after washing.

Auntieflo

I find the best way to store home made bread is in my tummy.

My thoughts exactly. : ). Mmmmm

ClaraB Mon 13-Jul-20 09:50:57

I find the bread that I make in the bread maker is lovely on the day that it's baked and I always make sandwiches, I particularly like the crust. I wrap the loaf in foil and over the next few days use it for toast which is delicious. Enjoy your bread maker.

cossybabe Mon 13-Jul-20 09:50:11

The dough will keep in the fridge for a few days, or in the freezer for 3 months - handy to have

pen50 Mon 13-Jul-20 09:49:56

I make a lot of bread as I'm coeliac and the store bought stuff is mostly horrible. I freeze it as sliced bread but have found that it tends to freeze unseparably so I now put a piece of baking parchment in between each slice.

DiscoGran Mon 13-Jul-20 09:42:39

I used to slice and freeze it too. I don't make much myself these days, but I also freeze shop bought rolls and cut baguettes into four to freeze. Very handy to have in. And lovely warmed up a bit in the oven. ?

DH has made a few loaves lately and they dont stay long enough to freeze but a question I have is about artisan bread generally. I find if I out it in the bread bin I 'lose' the crust. I have to leave it outside on a bread board for it to remain crusty.

jdga Mon 13-Jul-20 03:46:02

When I freeze a loaf of bread, I always wrap a segment of paper towel around it before putting it in whatever container/bag. It absorbs the moisture, & IMO, really helps to keep it fresh & soft.
Mmmm, home-made bread, yum!

Ramblingrose22 our local Morrisons has yeast, so I suspect one near you probably has it too

annodomini Sun 12-Jul-20 23:30:08

I found a source of yeast on Etsy where there are several dealers. I can't remember which one I bought it from.
