Poorly food

My poor DH went to the dentist this morning for a check up and came back feeling very sorry for himself as he had had a tooth taken out. The side of his face was completely numb and he had a list of do's and dont's. By lunchtime he still looked as if he and Tyson Fury had had a disagreement. So I asked him if he fancied scrambled eggs to eat. Healthy and easy to eat. Suddenly his face lit up. "I know what I would really like. When I was little and poorly I always had...." I knew straight away what he was going to say because it was what I always had if I was poorly. Two soft boiled eggs mashed up in a cup with salt and butter!!. I don't know why the cup made it special, but it just isn't the same in a bowl. What was your "poorly food" when you were small?

Yes I agree about the eggs and some soggy toast for dipping but it was the comment about being placed on the sofa with a quilt that made me remember how being 'mothered' seemed to make everything OK. My friends and I do it for each other now and then when we are recovering from something horrible. Nothing like receiving guests when dressed in your pyjamas and dressing gown, lying on the sofa with a cuddly blanket over you and a kind face to sit and drink tea with you to cheer you along

Tomato soup was my go-to 'poorly' food, too.

It didn't matter what illness I had been suffering, tomato soup was always the first food I could tolerate!

We went to Grandma's house when we were too poorly to go to school (Mum was a teacher). She gave us banana mashed up with milk and a sprinkling of sugar. Then we moved on to scrambled eggs or Heinz tomato soup. I have very fond memories of being tucked up on Grandma's sofa with a blanket, having one-to-one attention (I was one of four children). I still have tomato soup now if I am unwell.

Like so many of our generation I had my tonsils removed when I was seven and I was fed jelly and ice cream - a real treat!

Hot lemonade - try it, it’s wonderful & bread and butter spread with Bovril (I can’t abide it as a drink) .

Semolina pudding with a dollop of jam in the centre.

Percy Pig ice cream (M&S) is pretty good as a modern idea.

Oh yes, I remember those mashed eggs!

It is not kind of you to remind me of them, as the sight or thought of them has always made me feel sick.

we were given jelly when we were small and were ill. You could chose whether you wanted red or green or yellow.

Actually, I preferred custard - still do.

Heinz tomato soup is still my poorly food

GillT57 Fri 08-Jan-21 13:26:37

EllanVannin

The chopped up eggs in a cup was called coddled eggs at home and that was our poorly food, with soldiers.

What gets me on the road to recovery should the need arise, is porridge.

That's what we called it too. I have childhood memories of coddled eggs, in a particular pale green bone china tea cup grin but I had no idea what they were, now I know!

white toast from a pre sliced loaf spread with butter and marmite, but the toast has to be cut into 6 squares., no crusts wink

I used to suffer a lot with my tonsils when little and the only thing I ever wanted was chicken soup but it had to be on top of sweetcorn and my dad's homemade chips and it always made me feel better

Chopped ham and pork sandwich worked wonders for a sore throat.

As a chemist's daughter, as a small girl I wasn't often ill, but when I did catch flu, I was given a big bottle of original Lucozade (lovely orange cellophane wrapper!) Normally I hated the stuff, but it definitely did the job and I felt better quite quickly. Things go round full circle, though and as a Type 1 diabetic, I have been advised by my diabetic clinic to drink a bottle of Lucozade for hypos, especially as most of the soft drinks nowadays are sugar free, defeating the objective! Actually I like real fruit juice or jelly babies, but fruit juice is frowned upon except as hypo treatment and doesn't last too well.

Oxtail soup or semolina pudding

DD still has soft boiled Eggs in a cup when unwell, her hubby has never really taken to it, or making it for that matter. I get the cry of Muuuuummm.

catladyuk Fri 08-Jan-21 12:54:01

yes Bluecat, i still have lucozade but it's definitely not the same as it used to be as are so many things, digestive biscuits to name one that springs to mind.
(new thread? things aren't like they used to be?)
my 'poorly food' was lucozade (rarely!), bread and milk or eggnog made by my grandmother, warm milk with a beaten egg and sugar. i used to love it, not sure i would now though.

Bluecat Fri 08-Jan-21 12:40:44

Lucozade (so much nicer before they changed the recipe) and a cup of Bovril. I still have Lucozade when I am poorly, but it's not the same.

My dad liked "pobs" when he was ill - bread and sugar in warm milk. Yuk.

Chicken noodle soup, Jewish penicillin, comforts every time.

Clancy01 Fri 08-Jan-21 12:26:52

Mum used to make us egg custard when we were poorly or beef broth soup.

Tabbycat Fri 08-Jan-21 12:25:54

Because I didn't like Heinz tomato soup, my Dad would make me Campbell's mushroom soup with white toasted bread with the crust cut off, if I'd had dental treatment that involved anesthetic.
You have my sympathy, Charleygirl5, my mother had been a nurse. She believed in the power of school - she sent me no matter how ill I was feeling! Then there was the time she diagnosed my broken arm as just a sprain and refused to take me to the doctor's or A&E - eventually my father took me to hospital for an X-ray! My mother was so angry angry when I came home wearing a plaster cast!

Sparky56 Fri 08-Jan-21 12:25:52

Yes same here! Still have it for breakfast sometimes - nice way to start the day!?

Claretjan Fri 08-Jan-21 12:23:48

Heinz tomato soup too - with crisps sprinkled on top!
I don't like milk but my mum had bread and hot milk with sugar. She called it bread pobbies.
Our gp called when my sister was ill and noticed the bottle of lucozade by her bed. He told my mum don't waste your money on that, any liquid will do.

Tibbs Fri 08-Jan-21 12:20:49

My mom would make an egg custard

marionk Fri 08-Jan-21 12:08:45

Bacon sandwiches or mashed potatoes with peas and gravy
