It's been brought to our attention that it's British Pie Week! So we wanted to do a very scientific poll to see which is the most popular on Gransnet? Home-made, store bought, sweet, savoury?
Beef and stilton, chicken and ham, spinach and feta?
Lemon meringue, apple and pear? Post below and tell us.
If you're looking for inspiration, we've got a few delicious recipes here.

Rhubarb crumble.
Shepherds Pie.

Shepherds pie and Banoffee pie, either homemade or shop bought. Mmmmm yummy! Now I want some.

Nannina it’s lost that lovely dark richness, and a lot of its original flavour. Very sad. It’s not just a relish, it’s an institution. When my son’s engineering firm had its fiftieth anniversary, they marked it with a special issue bottle of Hendo’s (it didn’t taste any better though!).

My Nan used to make a fabulous Rhubarb pie with a suet crust .....please stop talking about pies I’m

Homemade steak and kidney casserole, made with slow cooked shin of beef and ox kidney in Mackeson gravy. Put in a pie dish and top with a baked suet crust pastry, crisp and golden on top, fluffy like dumplings underneath. Yum!!
I’m off to see if I’ve some steak and kidney in the freezer!

what is a steak and sausage pie? I have never heard of it, is it a regional thing?

JaneJudge Fri 05-Mar-21 13:19:12

Steak and kidney

We treated ourselves to a Lidl 'Deluxe' chicken, leek and wholegrain mustard pie this week. It was delicious!
I don't make pies very often myself. A family favourite are the Pieminister pies, especially 'Moo and Bloo' and 'Heidi'.
For dessert it would have to be Lemon Meringue. At a restaurant where we go when on holiday in France the meringue is in a huge dome about 6" high in the middle! Yum!

A chicken and mushroom pie with fresh veg, followed by lemon meringue pie with ice-cream. Yum yum....

Oh leeds22 what a shame that she took offence and wouldn't make it. The pastry on DM's meat and potato pie was similar, crunchy on top and squidgy underneath (about an inch thick), yummy! Hid the fact that there was very little meat in it. smile She was a fantastic cook though and her lemon meringue pie was to die for. I've cooked it a handful of times for a treat, as OH loves it and shop bought ones are too gooey and sweet, but honestly I can't be bothered with all the baking blind etc. I now wonder how DM made it so often. Favourite pie - I don't know if it's allowed, though it does have suet pastry and filling, but we love home made steak and kidney pudding and, best of all, once it's steaming it looks after itself.

Morello cherry pie with oodles of cream, closely followed in second place by redcurrant pie (also served with oodles of cream) made with freshly picked redcurrants from our bushes. The latter needs lots of sugar!!

My Mum's steak pie was lovely. She was a very basic cook and her pastry was a bit stodgy but the gravy from the meat used to soak into the pastry and was yummy. I told her how much I loved her soggy meaty pastry, she took offence and never made me one again. Obviously not the most tactful compliment!

American

Purplepoppies Fri 05-Mar-21 12:09:18

Steak pie, puff pastry...
Any fruit pies, always with custard, cream AND icecream! Because I can ?
My mum liked macaroni pies (Scottish fayre) much like a scotch pie.
I make amazing sausage rolls. I know they're not pies but still following the pastry theme.
When I'm visiting home I love a pukka pie from the chippy. I know supermarkets sell them but its never the same.
Chippys near me don't stock them, infact normally their pies are fried ? absolutely no need for that!!
What's American pie?? Apart from a film....

Cheese and onion if it's homemade, or steak and kidney from our local butcher.

Daisend1 Fri 05-Mar-21 11:50:55

Fish pie is my favourite made with cod in a rich and creamy sauce covered in buttery mashed potato..

Shepherds Pie - made with a lamb mince spiced with cumin and coriander and Lea and Perrins. I don't thicken it, just let it simmer down. I use frozen mashed potato on the top a la Delia Cheats. It is yummy.
Does a Cornish Pastie count as a pie? I like those almost as much.
In the Hairy Dieters Mums Know Best book there is a recipe called Jones Boys chicken pie. It's another one made with poached chicken, mushrooms and a tin of condensed mushroom soup. It has a lovely oat crumble topping. Clare MacDonald has a similar recipe made with her own cream filling ( of course ) and a topping made with pinhead oatmeal and almonds which is sublime.
I can't choose between them.

Currently M&S chicken, leek and ham pie. Delicious!

Fernhillnana Fri 05-Mar-21 11:42:41

Butter pies from the bakery in Preston, Lord I miss them!

Nannina Fri 05-Mar-21 11:39:55

Greyduster-it’s a relief to hear that you too think Hendos has lost its punch. I thought it was my ageing tastebuds

Riggie Fri 05-Mar-21 11:32:09

Its all about the pastry for me. Shortcrust or suet

HannahLoisLuke Fri 05-Mar-21 11:29:48

Creamy cheese and leek pie.
Apple pie with a cheese pastry crust, Delia recipe, gorgeous.

Craftycat Fri 05-Mar-21 11:29:13

Any pie!! I love a good pie.
Steak, Kidney, Ale & mushroom with flaky pastry tonight.
Apple pie with custard last night.
I really enjoy making pies- it is very satisfying- I do buy my flaky pastry now though although I still make own shortcrust.
Sausage meat & hard boiled eggs in a pastry roll is a favourite too.
